Olsztyn was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Imkenturm in 1944 by Werf de Noord, Alblasserdam, Netherlands for DDG Hansa, Bremen, Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gantry. She was allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946 and was renamed Feodosia (Russian : Феодосия). Sold to Poland in 1947, she was renamed Olsztyn. She served until 1972, when she was scrapped.

Description

The ship was 87.68 m (287 ft 8 in) long, with a beam of 13.51 m (44 ft 4 in). She had a depth of 4.80 m (15 ft 9 in), and a draught of 5.59 m (18 ft 4 in). [1] She was assessed as 1,925  GRT, [2] 936  NRT, 3,196  DWT. [3]

The ship was propelled by a compound steam engine, which had two cylinders of 42 cm (16+916 in) and two cylinders of 90 cm (35+716 in) diameter by 90 cm (35+716 in) inches stroke. The engine was built by Rheinmetall-Börsig AG, Tegel, Germany. [1] Rated at 1,200IHP, it drove a single screw propeller and could propel the ship at 10.5 knots (19.4 km/h). [3]

The ship had a complement of 25, plus 8-10 gunners during wartime. She was equipped with 1×30-tonne, 1×10-tonne and 10×5-tonne cranes. [4]

History

Imkenturm was a Hansa A Type cargo ship built in 1944 as yard number 604 by Werf de Noord, Alblasserdam, Netherlands for Deutsche Dampfschifffarts-Gesellschaft Hansa, Bremen, Germany. [3] [2] Her keel was laid on 29 March 1943. [4] She was launched on 2 March 1944 and completed by Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft, Flensburg, Germany on 27 February 1945. [3] Her port of registry was Bremen, [2] and the Code Letters DOIJ were allocated. She participated in the Evacuation of East Prussia and was damaged in an Allied air raid on Flensburg on 1 May 1945. [4]

On 8 May 1945, [4] Imkenturm was seized as a prize of war at Flensburg. She was passed to the Ministry of War Transport and was renamed Empire Gantry. [2] Her UK official number was 180638 and her call sign was GJLQ. She was registered in London and Moss Hutchinson Line Ltd managed her. [5]

In 1946 Empire Gantry was allocated to the Soviet Union and renamed Feodosia. [2]

In 1947, Feodosia was sold to Gdynia America Lines, Poland and was renamed Olsztyn. [2] The Code Letters SPAH were allocated. [4] In 1951, she was sold to Polska Żegluga Morska, Szczecin. [2] With their introduction in the 1960s, Olsztyn was allocated the IMO Number 5662782. [3] She served until 1972, [2] arriving at Bruges, Belgium on 31 January for scrapping by Gebroeders Van Heygen. [3] [4]

Requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine in 1940, she was seized by the Allies in Vordingborg, Denmark in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Coningsby. In 1946, she was transferred to the Dutch Government and renamed Margeca. In 1947 she was sold into merchant service and renamed Wickenburgh. In 1953 her compound steam engine and low-pressure steam turbine were replaced with a diesel engine, with a reduction in gross register tonnage from 1,494 to 1,420. She was sold to Greek owners in 1963 and renamed Nissos Thassos. In 1970 she was sold to Panamanian owners and renamed Savilco. She was scrapped in 1984.

Dimitry Laptev was a 1,560 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1936 as Heinrich Schmidt by Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft, Flensburg, Germany for German owners. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and was renamed Empire Constable. In 1946, she was transferred to the Soviet Government and renamed Dimitry Laptev. She served until she was scrapped in 1971.

Lowland was a 1,923 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1944 as Kattenturm by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for Deutsche Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft Hansa, Bremen. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Eden. In 1947, she was sold into merchant service and renamed Lowland. A sale to a Bermudan owner in 1959 saw her renamed Mary Enid. She was sold to a Greek owner in 1963 and renamed Stelianos and then Marynik following another sale in 1964. In 1967, she was sold to Hong Kong and renamed Euphipides, serving until she was scrapped in 1969.

Ryazan was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Licentia in 1944 by Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft, Flensburg, Germany for J Jost, Flensburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gabon. Allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946, she served until 1979 when she was sold to West Germany and renamed Rudi. She was scrapped at Santander, Spain that year.

Arsterturm was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Betzdorf in 1945 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for Unternehmen der Eisenstahlindustrie, Bremen. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gaffer. Sold in 1947, renamed Baltrader then Baltic Fir in 1952, she was sold to West Germany in 1956, rebuilt and renamed Arsterturm. She was sold in 1969 to India and renamed Unigoolnar. A further sale in 1976 saw her renamed Sudarsan Shakti, serving until 1981 when she was scrapped.

Yaroslavl was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Santander in 1943 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for the Oldenburg Portugiesische Dampschiffs Rhederei. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gage. She was chartered to the Dutch government later that year and was renamed Arnhem. Allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946, she was renamed Yaroslavl. She served until 1971, when she was scrapped.

Palmyra was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Fangturm in 1944 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for Hansa Line, Bremen, Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gallop. She was sold in 1947 and renamed Baltonia, the Baltic Oak in 1953. Volochaevsk was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Weserwald in 1943 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for Norddeutsche Lloyd, Hamburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Galveston. She was allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946 and was renamed Volochaevsk. She served until 1973, when she was scrapped.

Pagenturm was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Schauenberg in 1944 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for H Schuldt, Hamburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Galway. She was allocated to Belgium in 1946 and was renamed Kinshasha. She was sold to Norway in 1951 and renamed Anne Reed. Sold to West Germany in 1956, she was rebuilt and renamed Pagenturm. She served until 1964, when she was scrapped.

Auriga was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Adamsturm in 1944 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for Deutsche Dampfschifffarts-Gesellschaft Hansa, Bremen Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gantry. She was sold in 1947 and was renamed Baltanglia. She was renamed Baltic Pine in 1952. Sold to Greece in 1954, and renamed Germania, she was declared a constructive total loss following a collision in 1955. Sold to Germany, she was repaired and renamed Auriga. She served until 1965, when she was scrapped.

Filio was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Njong in 1944 by Stettiner Vulkan Werft AG, Stettin, Germany for Deutsche Afrika-Linien, Hamburg Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Garland. She was sold in 1946 and was renamed Sheldrake. She was sold to Liberia in 1959 and renamed Salamstar. Sold to Greece in 1960 and renamed Ambelos. She was sold in 1961 and renamed Marmina. A final sale in 1968 saw her renamed Filio. She served until 1972, when she was scrapped.

Ribinsk was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Hendrik Fisser VI in 1943 by NV Werft Gusto, Schiedam, Netherlands for Fisser & Van Doornum, Emden Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Garner. She was allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946 and was renamed Ribinsk. She served until 1975, when she was scrapped.

Aghios Nectarios was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Kalliope in 1944 by NV Koninklijk Maatschappij de Schelde, Vlissingen, Netherlands for Neptun Line, Bremen, Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Garrison. She was sold in 1947 and was renamed Bengore Head. She was sold to Greece in 1967 and renamed Aghios Nectarios. Following a sale to Cyprus in 1971, she served until 1974, when she was scrapped.

Khalda was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Tiefland in 1943 by Lübecker Flenderwerke AG, Lübeck, Germany for Hamburg Südamerikanische Dampfschifffahrts-Gesellschaft A/S & Co K, Hamburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the British Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gatehouse. She was sold to Canada in 1947 and was renamed Gulfport. She was sold to Liberia in 1964 and was renamed Stefani, then Agia Marina in 1966. She was sold to Greece in 1967 and renamed Bright. Sold in 1969 to Panama and renamed Khalda, she was arrested in 1974. Sold to Ethiopia in 1977, she was scrapped in 1982.

Vorios Hellas was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Sanga in 1944 by Lübecker Flenderwerke AG, Lübeck, Germany for Deutsche Afrika Linie, Hamburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gatwick. She was allocated to Greece in 1947 and was renamed Vorios Hellas. She was sold to Hellenic Lines in 1948. She was sold and scrapped in 1974.

Rodopi was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Setubal in 1944 by Lübecker Flenderwerke AG, Lübeck, Germany for Oldenburg Portugiesische Dampschiffs Rhederei, Hamburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gavel. She was allocated to Greece in 1945 and was renamed Rodopi. She was sold to Hellenic Lines in 1949. She was scrapped in 1974.

Salamanca was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Äolus in 1944 by J Cockerill SA, Hoboken, Belgium for Netptun Line, Hamburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Witham. She was sold to Hong Kong in 1948 and was renamed Choysang. A further sale in 1861 saw her renamed Milford. She was sold to Panama in 1967 and was renamed Salamanca. She was scrapped in 1971.
