Inger Skou was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Cuxhaven in 1943 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the United States. She was allocated to Denmark in 1948 and was renamed Inger Skou. She ran aground and sank in 1952.

Description

The ship was 86.74 m (284 ft 7 in) long, with a beam of 13.51 m (44 ft 4 in). She had a depth of 4.75 m (15 ft 7 in). She was assessed as 1,923  GRT, 1.017  NRT, 3,250  DWT. [1]

The ship was propelled by a compound steam engine built by Deutsche Werft. Rated at 1,200 indicated horsepower (890  kW ), it drove a single propeller and could propel the ship at 10.5 knots (19.4 km/h; 12.1 mph). [1]

History

Cuxhaven was a Hansa A Type cargo ship built in 1943 as yard number 423 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg She was launched on 14 July 1943 and completed on 28 September. Her port of registry was Hamburg. [1]

On 9 October, Cuxhaven was severely damaged in an air raid at Gotenhafen. She was towed to the Isselfjord. In 1945, she was seized as a prize by the United States. In 1948 she was sold to Denmark and was rebuilt by HSM. [1] A Lentz steam engine was installed. [2] Post-rebuild she was assessed at 1,806  GRT. [1] She was sold to Dampskibsselskabet af 1937 A/S - Ove Skou and was renamed Inger Skou. Her port of registry was Copenhagen and the Code Letters OYGS were allocated. [2]

On 3 June 1952, Inger Skou ran aground on the Chinchorro Bank, off the coast of British Honduras ( 18°40′N87°13′W / 18.667°N 87.217°W / 18.667; -87.217 ) and sank. She was on a voyage from New Orleans, Louisiana, United States to Belize City, British Honduras. [2] The loss was attributed to careless navigation. [3]

A sale to a Bermudan owner in 1959 saw her renamed Mary Enid. She was sold to a Greek owner in 1963 and renamed Stelianos and then Marynik following another sale in 1964. In 1967, she was sold to Hong Kong and renamed Euphipides, serving until she was scrapped in 1969.

Sukhumi was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Benue in 1944 by A Vuyk & Zonen, Capelle aan den Ijssel, Overijssel, Netherlands for the Deutsche Afrika Linien, Hamburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gable. Allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946, she served until 1969 when she was scrapped at Bo'ness, Lothian, United Kingdom.

Arsterturm was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Betzdorf in 1945 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for Unternehmen der Eisenstahlindustrie, Bremen. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gaffer. Sold in 1947, renamed Baltrader then Baltic Fir in 1952, she was sold to West Germany in 1956, rebuilt and renamed Arsterturm. She was sold in 1969 to India and renamed Unigoolnar. A further sale in 1976 saw her renamed Sudarsan Shakti, serving until 1981 when she was scrapped.

Yaroslavl was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Santander in 1943 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for the Oldenburg Portugiesische Dampschiffs Rhederei. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gage. She was chartered to the Dutch government later that year and was renamed Arnhem. Allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946, she was renamed Yaroslavl. She served until 1971, when she was scrapped.

Podolsk was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Weserstrand in 1944 by NV Nederland Scheepvaart Maatschappij, Amsterdam, Netherlands for Norddeutscher Lloyd. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gala. She was allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946, she was renamed Podolsk. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gallic. She was allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946 and renamed Rjev. She served until 1970 when she was scrapped.

Palmyra was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Fangturm in 1944 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for Hansa Line, Bremen, Germany. She served until 1973, when she was scrapped.

Pagenturm was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Schauenberg in 1944 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for H Schuldt, Hamburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Garner. She was allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946 and was renamed Ribinsk. She served until 1975, when she was scrapped.

Vorios Hellas was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Sanga in 1944 by Lübecker Flenderwerke AG, Lübeck, Germany for Deutsche Afrika Linie, Hamburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gatwick. She was allocated to Greece in 1947 and was renamed Vorios Hellas. She was sold to Hellenic Lines in 1948. She was sold and scrapped in 1974.

Rodopi was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Setubal in 1944 by Lübecker Flenderwerke AG, Lübeck, Germany for Oldenburg Portugiesische Dampschiffs Rhederei, Hamburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gatwick. She was allocated to Greece in 1945 and was renamed Rodopi. She was sold to Hellenic Lines in 1949. She was scrapped in 1974.

Salamanca was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Äolus in 1944 by J Cockerill SA, Hoboken, Belgium for Netptun Line, Hamburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Witham. She was sold to Hong Kong in 1948 and was renamed Choysang. A further sale in 1861 saw her renamed Milford. She was sold to Panama in 1967 and was renamed Salamanca. She was scrapped in 1971.

Arsterturm was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built in 1944 Deutsche Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft Hansa, Bremen. She was bombed and sunk on 26 February 1945.
