Fortune was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Weserstrom in 1944 by J Cockerill SA, Antwerp, Belgium for Norddeutscher Lloyd, Bremen, Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Galena. She was sold in 1947 and was renamed Albatross. She was sold in 1958 to South Africa and renamed Port Capetown. A further sale in 1959 saw her renamed Frontier. She was sold to Hong Kong in 1966 and was renamed Fortune. She served until 1968 when she was scrapped.
The ship was 85.19 m (279 ft 6 in) long, with a beam of 13.49 m (44 ft 3 in). She had a depth of 4.78 m (15 ft 8 in), and a draught of 8.20 m (26 ft 11 in). She was assessed as 1,926 GRT, 936 NRT, [1] 2,956 DWT. [2] She had a cargo capacity of 4,862 cubic metres (171,700 cu ft). [3]
The ship was propelled by a compound steam engine, which had two cylinders of 42 cm (169⁄16 inches) and two cylinders of 90 cm (357⁄16 inches) diameter by 90 cm (357⁄16 inches) stroke. The engine was built by Rheinmetall-Borsig AG, Berlin. [1] Rated at 1,200IHP, it drove a single screw propeller and could propel the ship at 10.5 knots (19.4 km/h). [2]
Weserstrom was a Hansa A Type cargo ship built in 1943 as yard number 701 by J Cockerill SA, Antwerp, Belgium for Norddeutscher Lloyd, Bremen, Germany. [2] [4] She was completed in January 1944. [2] Her port of registry was Bremen. [4]
In May 1945, Weserstrom was seized as a prize of war at Kiel. She was passed to the Ministry of War Transport. She was renamed Empire Galena. [4] The Code Letters GJGL and United Kingdom Official Number 180597 were allocated. Her port of registry was London and she was operated under the management of W Tulley & Co. Ltd., [1] Hull. [2]
On 6 March 1947, [3] Empire Galena was sold to the General Steam Navigation Co Ltd. [4] She was renamed Albatross on 30 July. [3]
On 2 April 1958, Albatross was sold for £51,500 to the National Shipping Lines of South Africa and was renamed Port Capetown.. [3] She was sold in 1959 to African Coasters (Pty) Ltd, Durban and renamed Frontier. [4] With their introduction in the 1960s, Frontier was allocated the IMO Number 5121990. [2]
In 1966, Frontier was sold to Summit Navigation Co., Panama and was renamed Fortune. She was operated under the management of Mollers Ltd, Hong Kong. [2] She served until 1968 and was scrapped at Hong Kong in December. [4]
Stettin was a 2,646 GRT cargo ship which was built in 1923 for the Stettiner Dampfer Compagnie. In 1930 she was sold to Norddeutscher Lloyd and renamed Akka. She was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine in 1940. Akka was seized as a war prize in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and being renamed Empire Calder.
Jean Marie was a 964 GRT coaster that was built in 1922 by F Schichau GmbH, Elbing, Germany as Tertia for German owners. A sale in 1925 saw her renamed Hornland. In 1926, a further sale saw her renamed Taube. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and was renamed Empire Contour. In 1946, she was transferred to Belgium and renamed Jean Marie. She was sold into merchant service, serving until 1951 when she sank after her cargo shifted.
Chaksang was a 1,923 GRT Hansa A type cargo ship which was built in 1944 as Weserbrück by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for Norddeutscher Lloyd. She was seized by the Allies in an incomplete state in 1945 and completed as Empire Fraser for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). She was sold in 1946 to the Indo-China Steam Navigation Co Ltd and renamed Chaksang. Suffering an on-board explosion and fire in September 1949, she sank at Hong Kong. She was subsequently raised and scrapped in 1950.
Ryazan was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Licentia in 1944 by Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft, Flensburg, Germany for J Jost, Flensburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gabon. Allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946, she served until 1979 when she was sold to West Germany and renamed Rudi. She was scrapped at Santander, Spain that year.
Arsterturm was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Betzdorf in 1945 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for Unternehmen der Eisenstahlindustrie, Bremen. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gaffer. Sold in 1947, renamed Baltrader then Baltic Fir in 1952, she was sold to West Germany in 1956, rebuilt and renamed Arsterturm. She was sold in 1969 to India and renamed Unigoolnar. A further sale in 1976 saw her renamed Sudarsan Shakti, serving until 1981 when she was scrapped.
Yaroslavl was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Santander in 1943 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for the Oldenburg Portugiesische Dampschiffs Rhederei. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gage. She was chartered to the Dutch government later that year and was renamed Arnhem. Allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946, she was renamed Yaroslavl. She served until 1971, when she was scrapped.
Podolsk was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Weserstrand in 1944 by NV Nederland Scheepsbouw Maatschappij, Amsterdam, Netherlands for Norddeutscher Lloyd. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gala. She was allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946, she was renamed Podolsk. She served until 1948 when she ran aground in the Yangtze and sank
Hermanos was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Hendrick Fisser V in 1944 by Verschure & Co's Scheepswerft en Maschinenfabriek, Amsterdam, Netherland for Fisser & Van Doornum, Emden, Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Galbraith. She was sold in 1946 and was renamed Highland. A further sale in 1959 saw her renamed Gowrie. She was sold to Greece in 1963 and was renamed Hermanos. She served until 1969 when she was scrapped.
Fairwood was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Celia in 1943 by Lübecker Maschinenbau-Gesellschaft, Lübeck, Germany for A. Kirsten, Hamburg, Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gallant. She was sold in 1947 and was renamed Richard Borchard. She was sold in 1960 to West Germany and was renamed Fairwood. She served until 1963 when she was scrapped.
Anglia was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Weserberg in 1944 by P Smit, Rotterdam, Netherlands for Norddeutscher Lloyd, Bremen, Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gallery. She was sold to Singapore in 1947 and renamed Kampar. She was sold in 1957 to Greece and renamed Anglia before being sold the next year to Panama. She served until 1974 when she was scrapped.

She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gallic. She was allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946 and renamed Rjev. She served until 1970 when she was scrapped.
Palmyra was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Fangturm in 1944 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for Hansa Line, Bremen, Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gallop. She was sold in 1947 and renamed Baltonia, the Baltic Oak in 1953. She was sold to West Germany in 1957 and renamed Palmyra. She served until 1962, when she was sunk in a collision with another ship.

She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gantry. She was allocated to the Soviet Union in 1946 and was renamed Feodosia. Sold to Poland in 1947, she was renamed Olsztyn. She served until 1972, when she was scrapped.
Auriga was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Adamsturm in 1944 by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for Deutsche Dampfschifffarts-Gesellschaft Hansa, Bremen Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gantry. She was sold in 1947 and was renamed Baltanglia. She was renamed Baltic Pine in 1952. Sold to Greece in 1954, and renamed Germania, she was declared a constructive total loss following a collision in 1955. Sold to Germany, she was repaired and renamed Auriga. She served until 1965, when she was scrapped.
Aghios Nectarios was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Kalliope in 1944 by NV Koninklijk Maatschappij de Schelde, Vlissingen, Netherlands for Neptun Line, Bremen, Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Garrison. She was sold in 1947 and was renamed Bengore Head. She was sold to Greece in 1967 and renamed Aghios Nectarios. Following a sale to Cyprus in 1971, she served until 1974, when she was scrapped.
Vorios Hellas was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Sanga in 1944 by Lübecker Flenderwerke AG, Lübeck, Germany for Deutsche Afrika Linie, Hamburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gatwick. She was allocated to Greece in 1947 and was renamed Vorios Hellas. She was sold to Hellenic Lines in 1948. She was sold and scrapped in 1974.
Rodopi was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Setubal in 1944 by Lübecker Flenderwerke AG, Lübeck, Germany for Oldenburg Portugiesische Dampschiffs Rhederei, Hamburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Gavel. She was allocated to Greece in 1945 and was renamed Rodopi. She was sold to Hellenic Lines in 1949. She was scrapped in 1974.

She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Witham. She was sold to Hong Kong in 1948 and was renamed Choysang. A further sale in 1861 saw her renamed Milford. She was sold to Panama in 1967 and was renamed Salamanca. She was scrapped in 1971.
