Sir Sabaratnam Arulkumaran is a Sri Lankan Tamil physician,former president of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics,and president-elect of the British Medical Association.
Arulkumaran was born in 1948. [1] [2] He was the son of K. Sabaratnam,a Director of the Jaffna Co-operative Society,and Gnambikai. [1] [2] He was from Kantharmadam in northern Ceylon. [3] He was educated at Jaffna Central College and Mahajana College,Tellippalai. [1] [2] [4] After school he joined the University of Ceylon in 1968 and graduated with an honours MBBS degree in 1972. [1] [4] [5] He then obtained a Diploma in Child Health from the university. [1] He then entered the National University of Singapore from where he obtained MD and PhD degrees. [6] He then became a fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. [6]
Arulkumaran joined the National University of Singapore in 1982 as a lecturer. [5] [7] He was professor of obstetrics and gynaecology (1993-1997) and head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (1995-1997). [1] [5] Whilst working in Singapore,Arulkumaran also carried out research in the United States,Sweden,and France. [7]
Arulkumaran moved to the United Kingdom in 1997 to be closer to other family members. [7] Here,he was professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Nottingham (1997-2001) and non-executive director of the Southern Derbyshire Acute Hospital NHS Trust (1997-2001). [1] [5] Arulkumaran was professor and head of obstetrics and gynaecology at St George's,University of London from 2001 to 2013. [5] [6]
Arulkumaran was treasurer of the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (1997-2003),its secretary-general (2003-2006) and was its president from 2012 to 2015. [1] [5] [6] He served as vice-president of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists before serving as its president from 2007 to 2010. [1] [5] [6] [8] In June 2012,he was elected president of the British Medical Association for 2013-2014. [5] [9]
Arulkumaran is an honorary fellow of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists,Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India,Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists,Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Pakistan,South African Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists,and Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. [10] He is an honorary member of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Gynäkilogie und Geurtshilfe,Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of Malaysia and Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada. [10] He has also received an honorary doctorate from the University of Athens. [10]
Arulkumaran has been editor-in-chief of Best Practices and Research in Clinical Obstetrics and Gynaecology since 1998. [5] He has written or edited 24 books,240 articles,and more than 150 book chapters. [6] He was appointed Knight Bachelor in June 2009 for his services to medicine. [5] [11]
In November 2012,Arulkumaran was appointed chair of a panel of inquiry into the death of Savita Halappanavar in Ireland. [12] [13]

The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Pakistan (SOGP) is a professional medical association formed by practitioners of obstetrics and gynecology in Pakistan. A member of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO),the body was established in 1957 and is among the oldest specialist professional bodies. When Prof. H.Dewattleville,the President of FIGO at that time,visited Karachi,he addressed staff and students at the Dow Medical College and members of the Pakistan Medical Council and stressed the need for such an organisation in the country. The first constitution of the organisation was signed and published by the Journal of Pakistan Medical Association in June 1957.
Dr. Sheila Balakrishnan is an obstetrician and a gynaecologist. She has authored three books on obstetrics and gynaecology. She is currently the associate professor at the department of obstetrics and gynaecology at Government Medical college,Trivandrum. She has pursued her MD and DNB from Trivandrum Medical college. She was awarded membership at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1994 and then conferred fellowship in the year 2008. She has received Commonwealth scholarship award in the United Kingdom. She is a member of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) and the Indian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Currently,she is a member of the contraception and medical disorders committee of FOGSI.
In November 2013,the medical team headed by Dr. Balakrishnan announced the birth of South India's first in vitro fertilization babies in Trivandrum Medical College Hospital. She has authored three books,Textbook of Obstetrics,Textbook of Gynaecology and Clinical case discussion in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and has published numerous research papers.
Thirunavuk Arasu Sinnathuray was a Malaysian obstetrician and gynaecologist. He was the first Malaysian doctor to possess both the diplomas of MRCOG and the FRCS.
Savita Halappanavar was a dentist of Indian origin,living in Ireland,who died from sepsis after her request for an abortion after a prolonged miscarriage was denied on legal grounds. In the wake of a nationwide outcry over her death,Irish voters passed in a landslide the Thirty-Sixth Amendment of the Constitution,which repealed the Eighth Amendment and empowered the Oireachtas parliament to make abortion legal. It did so through the Health Act of 20 December 2018.

Professor Mapalagama Liyanage Neville Kingsley Pierre De Silva FRCS,FRCOG FCOG (SL) was a Sri Lankan obstetrician and gynaecologist who served as president of the Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians &Gynaecologists in 1985–87. He was Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital from 1984. He was also a senior lecturer at the University of Colombo,and subsequently Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Peradeniya (1976–1984).

Dr. Bhalchandra Nilkanth Purandare,was an Indian gynaecologist. He was the son of Dr. Nilkanth Anant Purandare. He was the director of the Dr. N.A. Purandare Medical Centre for Family Welfare and Research,Mumbai. He served as the president of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) from 1973 to 1976 and the Mumbai Obstetric and Gynecological Society (MOGS) from 1966 to 1968. He was an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (1961). The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan,in 1972,for his contributions to medicine. His brother Dr. Vithal N. Purandare was also an acclaimed obstetrician and gynaecologist,renowned for his surgical prowess. He served as President of the Mumbai Obstetrics and Gynecology society(1973–1975) and FOGSI President in 1981. Their nephew Dr. C. N. Purandare,is a prominent gynaecologist and an ex President of FIGO.
James Haig FergusonLLD FRSE FRCPE FRCSEd was a prominent Scottish obstetrician and gynaecologist. He served as President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh from 1929 to 1931 and was president of the Edinburgh Obstetrical Society. He chaired the Central Midwives Board of Scotland and was manager of Donaldson's School for the Deaf. In 1929 he was a founding member of the British College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
