Padang is the capital and largest city of the Indonesian province of West Sumatra. It had a population of 833,562 at the 2010 Census and 909,040 at the 2020 Census;the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 942,938 - comprising 473,089 males and 469,849 females. It is the 16th most populous city in Indonesia and the most populous city on the west coast of Sumatra. The Padang metropolitan area is the third most populous metropolitan area in Sumatra with a population of over 1.7 million. Padang is widely known for its Minangkabau culture,cuisine,and sunset beaches.

Taufiq Ismail is an Indonesian poet,activist and the editor of the monthly literary magazine Horison. Ismail figured prominently in Indonesian literature of the post-Sukarno period and is considered one of the pioneers of the "Generation of '66". He completed his education at the University of Indonesia. Before becoming active as a writer,he taught at the Institut Pertanian Bogor. In 1963,he signed the "Cultural Manifesto" as a document that opposed linking art to politics. This cost him his teaching position at the Institut.

TDS is the biggest international cycling race in Indonesia,having the fifth largest audience in the world,it attracted many top international cyclists to participate in this world famous annual sports event.

Bagindo Azizchan,was an Indonesian independence fighter and second Mayor of Padang after independence. Inaugurated on 15 August 1946,replacing Abubakar Jaar. He died at the age of 36 after being involved in a battle against Dutch forces. His body was buried at the Bahagia Heroes Cemetery,Bukittinggi. On 9 November 2005,Bagindo Azizchan was declared a National Hero of Indonesia.

The conflict began when Allied forces initiated clashes and looted several Indonesian headquarters in the city. In response,Indonesian forces launched counterattacks in Padang,leading to a series of skirmishes throughout the area.
