Sakuran (さくらん,lit. "Derangement"),is a Japanese manga series by Moyoco Anno. The manga is about a girl who goes through different names throughout the story and becomes a tayū,or high ranking oiran (courtesan). North American publisher Vertical Inc published it in English in July 2012. [1]
A young kamuro (maid in a brothel) is sold into the red-light district of Yoshiwara and is put under the care of the oiran of the Tamagiku house,Shouhi,who names her Tomeki. The girl is very rebellious,leading to the heads of the household considering her potential future as a successful oiran,as a high-ranking courtesan needs not only beauty and talent but also the tenacity to maintain their position in order to be successful.
Tomeki later takes the name O-Rin as a hikkomi (or courtesan-in-training),and later takes the name Kiyoha,and is considered the most beautiful girl in the Tamagiku household. Her popularity threatens the position of the Tamagiku household's other oiran,Mikumo,which creates great tension between the two. Kiyoha's rivalry with Mikumo is not the only challenge she faces,as the appearance of a young man named Soujiro faces her with the impossibility of finding love in her position.
A live-action film adaptation was released in Japan on February 24,2007. The film stars Anna Tsuchiya and marks the directorial debut of photographer Mika Ninagawa. Ringo Sheena's album Heisei Fūzoku acts as the soundtrack.

Oiran is a collective term for the highest-ranking courtesans in Japanese history,who were considered to be above common prostitutes for their more refined entertainment skills and training in the traditional arts. Divided into a number of ranks within this category,the highest rank of oiran were the tayū,who were considered to be set apart from other oiran due to their intensive training in the traditional arts and the fact that they lived and worked in Kyoto,the political capital of Japan,which remained the cultural heart of the country when the seat of political power moved to Tokyo. Though oiran by definition also engaged in prostitution,higher-ranking oiran had a degree of choice in which customers they took.

The story centers on the friendship between two students named Momoko Ryugasaki and Ichigo "Ichiko" Shirayuri. These two are from completely different backgrounds:one is a Lolita-fashioned girl and the other,her antithesis,is a yankī. Viz Media licensed the novel for an English-language release in North America in 2006.

Tayū were distinguished historically from other courtesans and entertainers by their intensive training in numerous traditional artforms from a young age. Venus Versus Virus is a Japanese manga series created by Atsushi Suzumi which was first serialized on June 27,2005 in MediaWorks' shōnen manga magazine Dengeki Comic Gao!. The manga ended serialization in Dengeki Comic Gao! on February 27,2008 due to the magazine's discontinuation,but the manga continued serialization in ASCII Media Works' manga magazine Dengeki Daioh between March 21 and July 26,2008.
