Sameer Ahmed Bhat better known as Sameer Tiger was a militant operating within Kashmir, India, was serving as commander of Hizbul Mujahideen. [3] [4] He along with another militant named Aaqib Ahmad Khan from Rajpora Pulwama were killed in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir by security forces on 30 April 2018. [5] [6]

Early life

Sameer Bhat joined the militant group Hizbul Mujahideen on 7 May 2016; he was considered an A++ category terrorist by Indian authorities [7] [2] and there was a reward of 1,000,000 (US$14,000) for his capture. [8]

Bhat was recruited to Hizbul Mujahideen after he discontinued his schooling. He participated in several stone-throwing incidents prior to his terrorist activities, [6] and was involved in the firing incident on the residence of Syed Bashir Ahmad, a Member of Legislative Assembly in Sheikhard, as well as a grenade attack on the Naka Party in Pulwama. [9] Bhat was considered a poster boy for the Hizbul Mujahideen after the death of Burhan Muzaffar Wani in July 2016. [10] Bhat received media attention in 2017 after a picture was published of him posing with an M4 carbine on social media. [11] [2] He was arrested for stone pelting on Indian Armed Forces in Jammu and Kashmir on 24 March 2016, but was released five days later. [12]

Death

On 30 April 2018, Bhat was killed in an encounter by a joint team of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Indian Army and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), headed by Major Rohit Shukla. [6] His funeral on 1 May was attended by thousands of people including women and children. [13] An armed party made a gun salute, reported Times Now , [14] [15] [8] and three days later, thousands of people visited Tiger's residence in Drubgam village to express solidarity and offer condolences, reported Greater Kashmir . [16]

Aftermath

The day after Tiger died, government forces launched a cordon and search operation (CASO) in the area. [17] For their part, the Joint Resistance Leadership—comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin—expressed deep sorrow and anger over the killing of militants and called for a general strike across Kashmir on 1 May. [18]

The grave of Sameer was vandalized in May 2018. The incident erupted massive protest in Drabgam area of Pulwama and started stone pelting on the Army camp in Shadimarg, Pulwama on 30 May 2018. [19] Protesters blamed the security forces for vandalizing the grave. [20]

An attack on a Central Reserve Police Force camp at Bemina, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India, occurred on 13 March 2013. It resulted in the death of five CRPF personnel and two attackers. Ten others were also injured include security personnels and civilians.

Burhan Wani Kashmiri militant

Burhan Muzaffar Wani was a commander of pro-Pakistani Islamic-militant organization Hizbul Mujahideen in Indian Kashmir. He wielded massive popularity in the local populace through social media presence, and helped in conveying a more youth-oriented image of militancy in Kashmir, recruiting numerous foot-soldiers to the cause.

2016–17 Kashmir unrest

The 2016–17 unrest in Kashmir, also known as the Burhan aftermath, refers to a series of violent protests in the Kashmir Valley of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It started with the killing of Burhan Wani, a commander of the Kashmir-based Islamic militant organisation Hizbul Mujahideen, by Indian security forces on 8 July 2016. After his killing, anti-Indian protests started in all 10 districts of the Kashmir Valley. Protesters defied curfew with attacks on security forces and public properties.

Zakir Rashid Bhat or Zakir Musa was a former Hizbul Mujahideen commander (2013–17), and founder of an Indian wing of Al-Qaeda called Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind in 2017. Musa split with the political objectives of the Hizbul Mujahideen for Kashmir, in favour of Al-Qaeda's religious objectives of imposing Shariah in the region. His ideology was, only to pick up gun, and protests, stonepelting etc. won't work for kashmir issue, he said this, in a video released by him, at the time when he was trapped.

Lieutenant Ummer Fayaz was an Indian Army officer who was abducted and killed in May 2017 by Lashkar-e-Taiba and Hizbul Mujahideen militants in Jammu and Kashmir, India. He had been commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army from the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun on December 10, 2016 and was serving in the 2nd battalion, Rajputana Rifles.

Sabzar Ahmad Bhat was an area commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen. He was killed by police on 26 May 2017.

Major Rohit Shukla SC, SM, is an Indian Army Officer of 44 Rashtriya Rifles. He received the Shaurya Chakra, the third highest peacetime military award from the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind at the Defence Investiture Ceremony–I, at a ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi on March 27, 2018. He is currently posted with the 44 Rashtriya Rifles in Pulwama's Shadimarg area in Jammu & Kashmir. Major Shukla was awarded the Sena Medal on January 26, 2018.

Nazir Ahmad Wani Indian military personnel

Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani, AC, SM & Bar was a soldier in the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry of the Indian Army. He was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime military decoration, in January 2019. He was the first recipient of the Ashok Chakra award from Kashmir region of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Riyaz Ahmad Naikoo, chiefly known as Riyaz Naikoo alias Mohammad Bin Qasim is a commander of pro-Kashmiri insurgent organization Hizbul Mujahideen in Indian administered region Kashmir Valley. He is listed in the Home ministry's top 10 extremists list, and is carrying a counterterrorism reward of 12 lakh (INR-1,200,000) on his head which is offered by the Indian government.

Altaf Ahmad Dar, chiefly known as Altaf Kachroo was a commander of pro-Kashmiri Insurgent organization Hizbul Mujahideen in Indian administered region Kashmir Valley. He was listed under the A++ category, referes to as most wanted, by the Ministry of Home Affairs. He carried a counterterrorism reward of 15 lakh (INR-1,500,000) on his head offered by the Government of India to combat the Insurgency of Jammu and Kashmir.

Manan Bashir Wani chiefly known as Manan Wani or Mannan Wani was a resident of the Indian administered region of the Jammu and Kashmir. He was a PhD scholar and Hizbul Mujahideen commander who, according to news media had joined the insurgency in Kashmir.
