Samuel Firewu Fiche (born 3 May 2004) is an Ethiopian track and field athlete. He finished second at the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships and won the 2022 Ethiopian Athletics Championships in the 3000m steeplechase. [1]
In 2021 Samuel Firewu finished fourth in the Men's 3000 metres steeplechase at the 2021 World Athletics U20 Championships in Nairobi. [2]
In March 2022 he became Ethiopia senior champion for the first time winning the 3000m steeplechase in Addis Ababa. [3] He finished fifth at the 2022 African Championships in Athletics in June 2022 in Port Louis, Mauritius. [4] In August 2022, he finished as runner-up to compatriot Samuel Duguna to win the silver medal in the 3000 metres steeplechase at the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia. [5]
Samuel Firewu set a new personal best time of 8:10.57 at the Diamond League event in Monaco, in July 2023. [6] He was selected for the Ethiopia team for the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest. [7] In September 2023, he finished second at the Diamond League event in Xiamen, China, in the 3000m steeplechase. [8] Later that month, he finished second at the Diamond League final in Eugene, Oregon in a time of 8:10.74. [9]
In March 2024, he won gold in the 3000 metres steeplechase at the African Games. [10] In May 2024, he won the 3000 metres steeplechase at the 2024 Doha Diamond League event with a new personal best time of 8:07.25. [11] He finished fourth in the 3000m steeplechase on 19 May 2024 at the 2024 Meeting International Mohammed VI d'Athlétisme, [12] and second at the 2024 BAUHAUS-galan Diamond League event in Stockholm. The 3000 metres steeplechase or 3000-meter steeplechase is the most common distance for the steeplechase in track and field. It is an obstacle race over the distance of the 3000 metres, which derives its name from the horse racing steeplechase.
Gudaf Tsegay Desta is an Ethiopian middle- and long-distance runner. She is the current women’s world record holder for 5,000 m (14:00.21), set at the 2023 final Diamond League event, the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon. Eugene is also where she won the World Athletics Championships on 5,000 m in 2022. At the World Athletics Championships, Tsegay also won the gold medal for 10,000 metres in 2023; a bronze for the 1,500 metres in 2019, and silver in 2022. She is the 2020 Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist in the women's 5,000 metres. She is a two-time World Indoor Championship 1,500 m medallist, claiming bronze in 2016 and gold in 2022. She is also the world indoor record holder for the 1,500 m, setting previously in this event world under-18 (current) and U20 (former) records.
Yomif Kejelcha Atomsa is an Ethiopian distance runner. He won the silver medal in the 10,000 metres at the 2019 World Athletics Championships and gold medals for the 3000 metres at the 2016 and 2018 World Indoor Championships. Kejelcha is the world indoor record holder for the mile with a time of 3:47.01, set on 3 March 2019 in Boston.
Soufiane El Bakkali is a Moroccan runner specializing in the 3000 metres steeplechase. He is the 2020 Tokyo Olympic champion, having previously finished fourth at the 2016 Rio Olympics. At the World Athletics Championships, El Bakkali won two gold medals, winning his first in 2022 and later in 2023, He won silver in 2017 and bronze in 2019. He also placed third at the 2019 African Games and second at the 2018 African Championships.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen is a Norwegian middle- and long-distance runner. Ingebrigtsen is the current world record holder for the indoor 1500 metres and the 2000 metres, and holds the world best time over the two mile distance. Ingebrigtsen is a two-time World champion, winning gold medals in the 5000 metres in 2022 and 2023 and a four-time European champion, winning gold medals in the 1500 m and 5000 m in 2018 and 2022. He also won a gold medal in the 1500 m at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, setting an Olympic and European record. Selemon Barega Shirtaga is an Ethiopian long-distance runner. He won the gold medal in the 10,000 metres at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, silver for the 5,000 metres at the 2019 World Championships in Doha and bronze in the 10,000 metres at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest. Barega is a two-time 3,000 metres World Indoor Championship medallist, taking silver in 2018, and a gold in 2022.
Lamecha Girma is an Ethiopian athlete who specialises in the 3,000 metres steeplechase. He is the 2020 Tokyo Olympic silver medallist in the event and won silver medals at the 2019, 2022 and 2023 World Athletics Championships. Lamecha also won a silver in the 3,000 metres at the 2022 World Indoor Championships. He is the world indoor record holder for the 3,000 metres, which was set in February 2023. In June 2023 at the Meeting de Paris of the Diamond League, he broke the world record for the men's 3,000 metres steeplechase.
