Early life

Ghosh is from Bangaon, North 24 Parganas, in the Indian state of West Bengal. [5] He passed the Madhyamik examination in 1987 at Asansol Ramakrishna Mission High School [6] [7] and completed his higher secondary education at Bongaon High School in 1989. Subsequently, he enrolled in R. G. Kar Medical College and earned his MBBS degree in 1994. [8] Ghosh worked as an orthopaedics professor and surgeon at Calcutta National Medical College, later becoming the vice-principal of the college. In 2021, he was appointed principal of R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. [9]

R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH) is a public hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, India which started as Asia's first private medical college. It was established in 1886 to ensure self-sufficiency in medical education and services in the colonial era. On May 12, 1958, the West Bengal Government assumed management of the establishment. It was under the University of Calcutta from 1916 to 2003 and affiliated to West Bengal University of Health Sciences when it was established in 2003. The college is a co-educational institution that is recognized by the National Medical Commission and affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences.

2014 Birbhum gang rape case involves a gang rape which took place on 21 January 2014 in Birbhum district of West Bengal. When a 20-year-old girl from Subolpur village was gang-raped by a group of people, as a punishment ordered by Salishi Sabha, a village kangaroo court, for having affair with a boy of a different community.

On 11 June 2019, following the assault of two junior doctors at Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital (NRSMCH) the previous night, junior doctors in Kolkata began protesting and demanded that the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, should intervene and provide adequate security to medical professionals. The protests caused a collapse of healthcare facilities in the state. Protests continued through 13 June, despite attempts at mediation, resulting in the chief minister issuing an ultimatum to the protesting doctors. The doctors ignored the ultimatum, asking the government to meet their demands for security and for the chief minister to give them a public apology.

Syndicate Raj is an organized form of running corrupt extortion rackets, mostly in the manufacturing and construction sectors, that became prevalent in late 2000s in West Bengal. A small group of people, known as syndicates, started controlling any large monetary transactions including selling of land, construction of buildings, buying of material goods. These people, often connected to the ruling political party, demand a share of any large transaction happening in an area.

The COVID-19 pandemic was first confirmed in the Indian state of West Bengal on 17 March 2020 in Kolkata. The Health and Family Welfare department of Government of West Bengal has confirmed a total of 13,43,442 COVID-19 positive cases, including 1,09,806 active cases, 15,120 deaths and 12,18,516 recoveries, as of 28 May 2021.

Violence occurred in the aftermath of the 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election, which the ruling Trinamool Congress won for a third consecutive term. The BJP activists, supporters and voters were the chief victims of the violence carried out by Trinamool-backed goons and party cadres.

West Bengal cow smuggling scam is an ongoing Cattle theft in India scam going on from August 2022. The scam is currently investigated by Enforcement Directorate, Central Bureau of Investigation and National Investigation Agency jointly. The scam was revealed, following the arrest of prominent and senior leader of Trinamool Congress and president of Birbhum district Trinamool Congress, Anubrata Mondal, who is also known to be a close aide of the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee by the agencies.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2024 Kolkata rape and murder</span> Assault and rape incident in India

On 9 August 2024, a 31-year-old female postgraduate trainee doctor at R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, was raped and murdered in a college building. Her body was found in a seminar room on campus. On 10 August 2024, a 33-year-old male civic volunteer, named Sanjoy Roy working for Kolkata Police was arrested under suspicion of committing the crime. Three days later, the Calcutta High Court, transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) stating that the Kolkata Police's investigation did not inspire confidence. The junior doctors in West Bengal undertook a strike action for 42 days demanding a thorough probe of the incident and adequate security at hospitals. The incident amplified debate about the safety of women and doctors in India, and has sparked significant outrage, and nationwide and international protests.

The National Task Force (NTF) for safety of medical professionals at the workplace was set up by the Supreme Court of India in the aftermath of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal. On 20 August 2024, a three-judge bench led by the Supreme Court Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud and including Justice J. B. Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra constituted a 9-member task force to work out suggestions to improve the safety of medical professionals at the workspace.
