Sangao (Mardan District)

Sangao is a small village at the North West end of the Katlang area of District Mardan (North West Frontier Province, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa). Its population is unknown but certainly very small. Towards the North East of the village there is a series of mountains arranged in a half circle. In the southern region of Sangao lies another village called Babozai. The next door neighbor of the South West border is the Mian Khan village. These villages are so close that often people call them all by one name: Mian Khan-Sangao. Caves lie in the mountains of Sangao that contain ancient history. However, these caves have yet to be explored and are therefore of special interest to historians, explorers, and adventurers. Recently a new road has been constructed linking Sangao to Buner District. The road runs through the mountains of the village. [1]

Etymology

" Sangao is a Sanskrit word which means Army Headquarter. This place was headquarter of Army during Gandhara civilization. Locals found thousands of Gautama Buddha statues while digging. Most of these precious statues were stolen by British invaders during British Raj and placed in the British Museum in London. Some were placed in Peshawar Museum.

Demographics

Residents of Sangao are religious. The literacy rate is 45%. The village has four schools, no health clinic, and no pharmacy but there are civilian doctors. The population is unknown.

The Kashmir Smast caves, also called Kashmir Smats, are a series of natural limestone caves, artificially expanded from the Kushan to the Shahi periods, situated in the Babuzai Sakrah mountains in the Katlang Valley Mardan in Northern Pakistan. According to recent scholarship based on a rare series of bronze coins and artifacts found in the region, the caves and their adjacent valley probably comprised a sovereign kingdom in Gandhara which maintained at least partial independence for almost 500 years, from c. 4th century AD to the 9th century AD. For most of its history, it was ruled by White Hun governors or princes.

Ganji Bar is the lower valley region from the old flow of the rivers Satluj and river Beas or river Hakra to river Ravi. There was a high ridge in the middle of Montgomery (Sahiwal), Sahiwal District, old Gogaira district. This high land runs from northeast to southwest. it was also called Dhaya. Dhaya is a term applied to a slope to the top of the ridge from the low lands at foot. This ridge occupied the middle part of the area and its top was called Ganji Bar. The soul of the ridge was inferior and saline. But on the other hand, it was a view that with a plentiful supply of water and good cultivation the greater position of the land could be brought to bear fair crops. Ganji Bar was the only Bar for its elevated situation, the aridest and naturally barren portion of the Bari Doab. But it was a fact that all this Jungle of Bar was composed of good quality soil which only requires irrigation to produce many crops. Ravi Bar was a dense forest. It is 40 miles from Chatuchak, a village in Gogaira, to Harappa. This entire portion is called Ganji Bar.

Sawal Dher is an historic village in Mardan District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, that contains the remains of an ancient city. The village is located 10 kilometers southwest of Katlang-Jamal Ghari, most of the relics of this site are now in Museum. This site is situated at a distance of 4 kilometers in the southwest of Jamal Garhi. Most of the sculptures of this monastery are preserved in Peshawar and Lahore Museums. It is 19 km away from the district capital Mardan.

Kuprai Amazai is a village in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. This village was founded by migrants from Amazo Gharai Mardan in 1718. It got its name from its proximity to a large stone which looked like a human skull.. In Pashto, a human skull is called a Kooprai which was corrupted to Kupri over the years. The father (Baba) of this village migrated from District Mardan and his name was Ahmed Baba. The main tribes in Amazai are Yousafzai, Tanoli, Mughals and Gujjars. The population is approximately 3500 and the predominant occupations are in agriculture.

The Utmankhel is a Pashtun tribe present in Pakistan, with substantial numbers in Afghanistan. They lie between the Mohmands and the Ranizais of Swat, to the west and south-west of the junction of the Swat and Panjkora rivers. The Utmankhel mostly living in Malakand, Bajaur, Mohmand, Lower Dir, Mardan and Orakzai. The Utmankhel are Pashtuns, part of the Karlani tribal confederacy, who fought against British and Mughals emperors in Pakhtunkhwa. The British regarded the Utmankhel tribesmen as “warlike” peoples and one of the Martial Race. The Utmankhel are a tall, stout and fair race, but their dress and general customs have been assimilated by the neighboring peoples of Bajaur. Utmankhel speak the same dialect of Pashtu called Yousafzai Pashto.

Kalu Khan is a village located between Shawwa-Adda and Adina village on the main Mardan–Swabi road in Khyber–Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan.

Babozai is a town and union council of Mardan District in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. It is located at 34°50'0N 72°8'0E and has an altitude of 1754 metres.

Katlang is a tehsil in the Mardan District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. It is located approximately 19 kilometers north of Mardan. The population of Katlang was 343,144 in 2017.

The Andar are a Ghilji Pashtun sub-tribe. The Andar occupy nearly the whole of the extensive district of Shalgar south of Ghazni The Andar were traditionally known for their skill in the construction and maintenance of large karez. More concentrated in Ghazni Province, they have also a significant presence in Paktia. During the 19th century they joined in the Ghilji revolt and many were summarily sent into internal exile. Somewhat inexplicably, they allied themselves for a time with the Harakat-i Islami, during the anti-Soviet campaign. In fact, there were two Mujaheddin parties named Harakat-i Islami Afghanistan, the other and far more significant party was originally a 'united front' of mainly Hezb-i Islami and Jamiat-i Islami, that collapsed after only a few months, leaving behind a significant party that was in many ways a precursor to the present day Taliban movement. A majority of the Andar tribe were affiliated with this 'Harakt-i Islami' and it is notable that the leader of this united front and later party, Mawlawi Mohammad Nabi Mohammadi was Andar by tribe. Similarly, the senior Mawlawi Mansoor was Andar too. Mansoor's son Saifurrahman Mansoor was later an important figure and military leader in the Taliban movement.

Mian Khan is a village in Katlang Tehsil, Mardan District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pakistan. This village has historical significance and is considered the oldest village in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa dating back to 190 BC, after the archaeological dig of 2014.

The tombs of Sufi Syed Mian Kareem Shah Tirimzai and Kargil, Nishan e Haider hero Kernal Sher Khan are situated In front of each other at razzar's capital's oldest graveyard in Shewa Adda. It's the political hub of NA-19 and PK-47 politics also. Along with sports activism mainly night tournaments of cricket,volleyball,football, badminton etc., this city plays a vital role in promoting healthy activities.

The British Baizai district is a bay about 20 miles long and 12 miles broad, which runs into the hills between the Paja and Malakand ranges at the extreme N.W. of the Yusufzai division of the Peshawur district. It is inhabited by Baizai, Swati, Utmankhel and Khattak, with some Mohmand, Rowanri, etc. The last of these claim to be Pathans, and there is no great family of khans in Baizai. On the fifth and 14 December 1849, Colonel Bradshaw led an expedition against those in British territory, in which he attacked and destroyed the villages of Sangao in British Baizai', and Palai Zormandai and Sherkhana in Swat Baizai. These operations were led against the Swatis, Ranizais and Uthmankhels of the Lundkhor tract. From the time of the annexation of the Punjab, the Swatis uniformly proved themselves bad neighbours to the British. They used the plains of Peshawar as hunting-grounds, as plunderers passed through Ranizai and plundered the plains of Hashnagar and Yusufzai. The Swatis harboured renegades, refugee criminals and internal malcontents, and took every opportunity of inciting British villages to violence.

Qasmi is a scenic village and union council situated in the Mardan District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. It is located approximately 35 kilometers northeast of Mardan City. The village is blessed with the natural beauty of a river, which surrounds it from three directions and flows consistently throughout the year.
