Sankarapuram [1] is a census town panchayat of Sivaganga district in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. [2] This census town is located in southwestern Karaikudi on national highway NH536. Currently the town panchayat has 15 wards with two villages consisting of Sakkottai and Sankarapuram, administered by village officers. [3]

As of the 2011 census, Sankarapuram has a population of 26,536, of which 13,283 are males and 13,253 are females. [4] Children aged 0-6 make up 10.48% of the population, at 2,781. The female sex ratio is 998, compared to the state average of 996. Moreover, the child sex ratio is 960, compared to the state average of 943. The literacy rate is 91.65%, which is higher than the state average of 80.09%. Male literacy is 95.02% while female literacy is 88.29%. It has total administration over 6,854 houses to which it supplies basic amenities like water and sewerage. [5] As announced by government of Tamil Nadu on March 15 2024, Sankarapuram is expected to be a part of Karaikudi Municipal Corporation. [6] [7]

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sankarapuram is planning to have a permanent primary health care centre. [8]

Puduvayal is an important commercial centre for trade in the Sivaganga district and part of the suburban region of Karaikudi. The town is famous for its Veerasekara Umaiyambigai Temple. Sivaganga District is one of the 38 districts in Tamil Nadu state, India. This district was formed on 15 March 1985 by trifurcation of Ramanathapuram district into Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar and Sivaganga districts. Sivaganga is the district headquarters, while Karaikudi is Big City the most populous city in the district, administered by the Karaikudi Municipal Corporation. It is bounded by Pudukkottai district on the Northeast, Tiruchirappalli district on the North, Ramanathapuram district on South East, Virudhunagar district on South West and Madurai district on the West. Karaikudi City Municipal Corporation is the civic body governing city of Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu state of India. It was the 22nd Municipal corporation in Tamil Nadu, and was established on 15 March 2024. It will be headed by a mayor, who presides over a deputy mayor and will be administrated by City Commissioner. Newly formed Karaikudi Urban Agglomeration area has adjoined with surrounding parts like Sankarapuram census town, Kottaiyur town panchayat, Kandanur town panchayat, Puduvayal town panchayat and village panchayats that includes Koviloor, Ariyakudi, Amaravathiputhur, Iluppaikkudi and Managiri. The annual tax revenue of the corporation is expected to be about 57.25 crore rupees. Karaikudi is one of the major educational cities and tourist attractions in Tamil Nadu and had a population of 303,291 and area of 94.31 km² as in 2023.

The Karaikudi Urban Agglomeration, or Karaikudi Metropolitan Area, is the most populous urbanized area in Sivaganga district in the state of Tamil Nadu. The Karaikudi Metropolitan Area consists of the city of Karaikudi and its suburbs in Sivaganga district, together formed as Karaikudi Urban Agglomeration by government of Tamil Nadu.
