Karaikudi City Municipal Corporation [1] is the civic body governing city of Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu state of India. It was the 22nd Municipal corporation in Tamil Nadu, and was established on 15 March 2024. It is headed by the mayor, who presides over a deputy mayor and is administrated by the City Commissioner. Karaikudi Urban Agglomeration area has adjoined with the surrounding areas of Sankarapuram, Kottaiyur, Kandanur, and Puduvayal town panchayats; and village panchayats that includes Koviloor, Ariyakudi, Amaravathiputhur, Iluppaikkudi and Managiri. The annual tax revenue of the corporation is expected to be about 57.25 crore rupees. Karaikudi is one of the major educational cities and tourist attractions in Tamil Nadu and had a population of 303,291 [2] and area of 94.31 km² as in 2023. [3]

History and administration

Karaikudi was constituted as a municipality in 1928 and was upgraded to a Grade II Municipality in 1973, to Selection Grade in 1988, to a special grade in 2013, and City Corporation in 2024. [4] The area of the city is about 33.75 km2, comprising the revenue towns of Kottaiyur, Kandanur, Puduvayal and Sankarapuram and Surrounding villages of Kalanivasal, Sekkalai Kottai, Ilupakkudi, Ariyakudi , Koviloor, Managiri and Senjai. [5] The functions of the city corporation are divided into six departments: general administration/personnel, Engineering, Revenue, Public Health, city planning and Information Technology (IT). [6]

On 15 March 2024, Karaikudi Greater Municipality was upgraded to Municipal Corporation by Chief minister of TamilNadu M.K. Stalin [7] and became one of the 25 municipal corporations in Tamil Nadu Consists of 100 wards after Coimbatore & Madurai Corporations.It was the first corporation to be made in the Sivaganga District.

Sankarapuram is a census town panchayat of Sivaganga district in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This census town is located in southwestern Karaikudi on national highway NH536. Currently the town panchayat has 15 wards with two villages consisting of Sakkottai and Sankarapuram, administered by village officers.
