List of municipal corporations in Tamil Nadu

Municipal Corporations are the local governing bodies of the urban areas in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. A municipal corporation carries out its functions through well organized divisions or departments. The 74th Amendment to the Constitution of India defined the formations of urban local governments and their activities. [1]

Chennai Corporation, which was established on 29 September 1688, is the oldest corporation in India and is the second oldest in the world after London. [2] Madurai Municipal Corporation was established in 1971 and Coimbatore Municipal Corporation in 1981. Three more were established in 1994 and the count remained at six till 2007. Since then 19 more urban bodies have been declared as municipal corporations. As of 2024, there are 25 municipal corporations in the state.

Pudukkottai is the administrative headquarters of Pudukkottai district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Pudukottai Municipal Corporation is located on the banks of the Vellar River. It has been ruled, at different times, by the Mutharaiyar dynasty, Cholas, Early Pandyas, Thondaimans, and the British. It is situated about 372 kilometres (231 mi) southwest of the state capital Chennai,50 kilometres (31 mi) southeast of Tiruchirappalli, 60 kilometres (37 mi) southwest of Thanjavur ,108 kilometres (67 mi) northeast of Madurai,116 kilometres (72 mi) East of Dindigul and 78 kilometres (48 mi) Northeast of Sivaganga. Dindigul is a city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the administrative headquarters of the Dindigul district. Dindigul is located 420 km (260 mi) southwest from the state capital, Chennai, 100 km (62 mi) away from Tiruchirappalli,66 km (41 mi) away from Madurai and 72 km (45 mi) away from Karur. The city is known for its locks and biryani.

Palani (Tamil:[paɻani], is a town and a taluk headquarters in Dindigul district of the western part of Tamil Nadu state in India. It is located about 106 kilometres south-east of Coimbatore and 122 kilometres north-west of Madurai, 67 kilometres from Kodaikanal. The Palani Murugan Temple or Arulmigu Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple, dedicated to Murugan is situated on a hill overlooking the town. The temple is visited by more than 7 million pilgrims each year. Oddanchatram is town in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu. The town was carved out of Madurai District in 1985. Oddanchatram has the second largest Vegetable market in Tamil Nadu and a large Cattle market. As of 2011, the town had a population of 30,064. It is known as the vegetable city of Tamil Nadu. Almost 70% of the vegetables from this market is sent to Kerala and remaining is sent to other states. Agriculture is the major economy for the town. The town was once a small village under the Aanda Nadu. This constituency, along with Palani, is historically a part of the Kongu region and distinguishes itself from the rest of the district in terms of culture and food.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Pallapatti, Karur</span> Town in Tamil Nadu, India

Pallapatti is one of three municipalities of Karur district in Tamil Nadu, India. The history of Pallapatti dates back 600 years. It is accessible from the NH 44 connecting Dindigul and Karur and is located 46 km (29 mi) from Dindigul and 35 km (22 mi) from Karur, which can be reached through Aravakurichi town. Pallapatti is a Tamil Muslim-majority town that emphasizes passing traditional and cultural values across generations. There are several mosques, a church and a temple. The Nankanji River flows through Pallapatti.

Tiruchirappalli has a well-developed transport infrastructure. Being located almost at the geographic centre of the state Tamil Nadu India, Tiruchirappalli is well connected by Road, Rail and Air with most cities.

Salem City Municipal Corporation (SCMC) is a civic body that governs Salem city, Tamil Nadu, India. It consists of a legislative and an executive body. The legislative body is headed by the city mayor while the executive body is headed by a Chief Commissioner. This corporation consists of 60 wards and is headed by a Mayor who presides over a Deputy Mayor and 60 councillors who represent each ward in the city. SCMC is the fifth largest municipal corporation in Tamil Nadu. For administrative purposes, the Salem corporation is divided into four zones: Suramangalam, Hasthampatty, Ammapettai, and Kondalampatty. Each Zonal Office has its own Zonal Chairman and an Asst. Commissioner to take care of Zonal Activities.

Local bodies in Tamil Nadu constitute the three tier administration set-up in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is a system of local government which forms the last level from the Centre. Chennai Corporation in the then Madras Presidency, established in 1688, is the oldest such local body not only in India but also in any commonwealth nations outside United Kingdom.

The Madurai Metropolitan Area, is the 31st largest metropolitan area in India and is the fourth largest metropolitan area in the state of Tamil Nadu only next to Chennai, Coimbatore and Salem.The Madurai Metropolitan Area consists of the city of Madurai and its suburbs in Madurai district.

The Tiruchirappalli Metropolitan Area, or Tiruchirappalli Urban Agglomeration, is the 51st largest urban agglomeration in India and is the fifth largest metropolitan city in the state of Tamil Nadu next to Chennai, Coimbatore, Salem and Madurai. The Tiruchirappalli Metropolitan Area consists of the city of Tiruchirappalli and its suburbs in Tiruchirappalli district.
