The 2024 Indian general election was held in Tamil Nadu on 19 April to elect 39 members of the 18th Lok Sabha.^[1] The election results were announced on 4 June 2024.^[2]^[3]

The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in the state and the Indian National Congress (INC) nationally, secured all the 39 seats—a second consecutive "sweeping" win for the alliance after the 2019 elections. The opposing National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the federal ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), lost all the seats again. Whereas the Main opposition party in the state All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), lost the one seat (Theni) they had won when they were part of the NDA in the 2019.

Background

DMK is part of Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, which was formed on 18 July 2023. On 25 September 2023, AIADMK withdrew from the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance to form and lead the new alliance, AIADMK+.^[4]^[5]^[6]

On 19 January 2024, DMK constituted a seven-member committee to hold consultations with alliance partners for seat sharing.^[7] On 22 January, AIADMK set up a 5-member committee to hold seat sharing talks with alliance partners.^[8]^[9] On 26 January, CPI(M) formed a four membered panel for seat sharing with DMK. Central committee members P. Sampath, P. Shanmugam and state committee members N. Gunasekaran and K. Kanagaraj were included in the panel. ^[10] On February 5, Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance held seat sharing talks with Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam.^[11]

On 19 March 2024 the Bharatiya Janata Party finalised seat sharing a with the Pattali Makkal Katchi as part of the National Democratic Alliance, were the party will contest 10 seats in Tamil Nadu.^[12]

On 20 March 2024, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami released the first list, comprising 16 candidates contesting the election. The Party finalised seat sharing and allotted one seat each to its allies SDPI, PT and five Seats to DMDK.^[13] On March 21, Palaniswami released the second and final list, comprising 16 AIADMK candidates contesting the election.^[14]

The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam is an Indian regional political party in the state of Tamil Nadu. The party was led by its founder until 14 December 2023 from its date of founding. From 14 December 2023, the DMDK is led by Vijayakant's wife Premallatha Vijayakant as general secretary of the party. The party served as the main opposition party in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 27 May 2011 to 21 February 2016. The headquarters of the party is called Captain Aalayam, which is located at Jawaharlal Nehru Salai, Koyambedu, Chennai.

The thirteenth legislative assembly election, of Tamil Nadu was held on 8 May 2006. It was held for all 234 constituencies to elect the government in the state for the following five years. The votes were counted three days later on 11 May 2006 and all the results were out by the end of the day. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led (DMK) front won the elections, with the DMK emerging as the single-largest party with 96 seats, and its leader, M Karunanidhi was sworn in as Chief Minister for a fifth and final term. This election marked the first time the state saw a hung assembly with no party gaining a majority of its own. As a result, DMK formed a minority government with its allies, which is the first in the state since the 1952 election. 13th Assembly was instituted due to this election.

The 2004 Indian general election polls in Tamil Nadu were held for 39 seats in the state. The result was a victory for the Democratic Progressive Alliance, which included the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and its allies the Left Front which won all 39 seats in the state. DMK and its allies were also able to hold on to Pondicherry, which has 1 seat, which allowed the UPA to win all 40 seats in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. The 2 larger partners Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) (16) and Indian National Congress (INC) (10) won the majority of seats, with the junior partners Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) (5) and Marumaralarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) (4) winning the rest. The remaining 4 seats were won by the Left Front parties. Due to the support of the Left Front for the government at the centre, all 39 seats in Tamil Nadu, supported the formation of the UPA-led government.

The 1999 Indian general election polls in Tamil Nadu were held for 39 seats in the state. The result was a victory for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) which won 26 seats. After leaving the NDA, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, hoped to create some damage, but ended up losing 8 seats, compared to the 1998 Lok Sabha elections. This is also the first time that Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, allied with the Bharatiya Janata Party, helping them have power at the national level for the next 5 years with the NDA, before they joined the UPA. The NDA, ended up losing 3 seats, compared to the election the year before, due to AIADMK leaving the NDA, but the seats were made up, because DMK left the united front and joined the NDA.

The 1998 Indian general election polls in Tamil Nadu were held for 39 seats in the state. New elections were called when Indian National Congress (INC) left the United Front government led by I. K. Gujral, after they refused to drop the regional Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party from the government after the DMK was linked by an investigative panel to Sri Lankan separatists blamed for the killing of Rajiv Gandhi. The result was a landslide victory for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) winning 30 seats, which helped result in Atal Bihari Vajpayee being sworn in as the 16th Prime Minister of India. J. Jayalalithaa and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, broke off from their long alliance with Indian National Congress and formed an alliance with Bharatiya Janata Party, by joining the National Democratic Alliance. This state proved to be very important in determining the prime minister, since the 18 seats of AIADMK proved valuable for BJP to hold power. That was short-lived, since the AIADMK left the alliance in less than a year, and BJP lost the vote of confidence resulting in fresh elections being called.

Edappadi Karuppa Palaniswami, often referred to by his initials E.P.S., is an Indian politician who is the current leader of opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. He served as the 7th chief minister of Tamil Nadu, from 2017 to 2021. He has been the General Secretary of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) since 28 March 2023. Previously, Palaniswami has served as the interim general secretary (2022–23), joint co-ordinator (2017–22) and headquarters secretary (2016–22) of AIADMK.

The All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi was an Indian regional political party in the state of Tamil Nadu. It was founded by the former member of parliament of the Republic of India R. Sarathkumar on 31 August 2007. The party was led by Sarathkumar as president until 12 March 2024 from its date of founding. On 12 March 2024, the AISMK was merged into the Bharatiya Janata Party by its founder Sarathkumar, and presided over by K. Annamalai, the state president of the Tamil Nadu BJP.

The 2014 Indian general elections for Tamil Nadu's 39 seats in the 16th Lok Sabha were held on 24 April 2014. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam led by its general secretary J. Jayalalithaa won a spectacular victory, taking 37 of the 39 seats. The total electors in the state of Tamil Nadu for the election was 55,114,867 and 73.74% of voters exercised their right to do so. The results of the elections were declared on 16 May 2014.

The 2019 elections for Tamil Nadu's 39 seats in the 17th Lok Sabha were held on 18 April, in the second phase of the 2019 Indian general elections. The alliance led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, won a landslide victory, taking 38 of the 39 seats.

The Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam is an Indian regional political party in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is founded by the former member of parliament T. T. V. Dhinakaran at Melur on 15 March 2018 as a breakaway faction from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam after his expulsion him from party. The headquarters of the party is located at Westcott Salai, Royapettah, Chennai.

The Sixteenth Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Election was held on 6 April 2021, to elect representatives from the 234 constituencies in the Indian State of Tamil Nadu. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) won the election, ending the decade-long reign of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). The DMK's leader M. K. Stalin became the eighth Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and the 12th Chief Minister since the 1956 reorganization. He replaced Edappadi K. Palaniswami of the AIADMK.
