Yogendra Yadav (born 5 September 1963) is an Indian activist, psephologist and politician whose primary interests are in the political and social sciences. [2] [3] [4] He was a Senior Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), Delhi from 2004 to 2016. He is a former member of University Grants Commission (UGC) and National Advisory Council on the Right to Education Act (NAC-RTE) constituted by Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Govt of India, in 2010. [5] He was a member of the National Executive of the Aam Aadmi Party until 2015.
Yadav is a founding member of Swaraj Abhiyan and Jai Kisan Andolan. [6] He was the founding National President of Swaraj India, a registered political party. [7] He is also the National Convener of Bharat Jodo Abhiyan. [8]
Yogendra Yadav's father was a professor of economics and his paternal grandfather was a teacher. His wife, Madhulika Banerjee, is a professor at the University of Delhi. His childhood name was Salim, which is commonly associated with people of the Muslim faith. It was changed to Yogendra when he was aged five because he was being mocked by children at school. Yadav says that his original name, and its continued usage among family members and friends, reflects a familial response to the murder of his grandfather in a communal riot in 1936. [9] [10] [11]
Before joining CSDS, he was an assistant professor of Political Science at Panjab University, Chandigarh (1985-1993). [12] Between 1995–2002, Yadav was the founder-convenor of the Lokniti network. He was also founder-director of the CSDS Lokniti research programme on comparative democracy between 1997 and 2003. [12] Since 1996, he has been a psephologist and political commentator on a number of television channels in India including Doordarshan, NDTV and CNN-IBN. [13]
Yadav was appointed as a member of the National Advisory Council for the implementation of the Right to Education Act in 2010. [14] He was appointed a Senior Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies in 2004. [12]
In 2011, Yadav supported the general aims of, and spoke publicly at events, during the nationwide anti-corruption protests and later joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), formed by anti-corruption activists. [15] [16] Yadav served as a member of the National Executive of the party. [17] His involvement with the AAP was perceived as creating a conflict of interest with his July 2011 appointment as a member of the University Grants Commission, resulting in the Ministry of Human Resource Development ejecting him from the latter role in September 2013. [18] Yadav had argued that there was no conflict. [19]
Yadav contested the 2014 Indian general elections from Gurgaon constituency as an AAP candidate. [20] He came fourth and lost his deposit. [21]
On 4 March 2015, Yadav was voted out of AAP's Political Affairs Committee (PAC). [22] Subsequently, on 28 March, he was expelled from the party's National Executive for alleged "anti-party activities". [23] In April, he was expelled from the party. [24] Yadav denied being involved in anti-party activities and stated that he was victimised for challenging "dictatorial ways" of the party's chief Arvind Kejriwal. [25]
Together with Prashant Bhushan, Anand Kumar (sociologist) and Ajit Jha, Yadav has formed a new political organisation called Swaraj Abhiyan. [25] [26] [27] Yogendra Yadav urged Delhi voters to choose NOTA in 2019 Indian general election as no political parties in Delhi have fulfilled their promises. [28] [29] He termed NOTA as “No Till an Alternative”. [30] [31]
Yadav is a member of Samyukt Kisan Morcha coordination committee, which spearheaded the 2020–2021 Indian farmers' protest. In 2022, Yogendra Yadav joined Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Yatra and described the Yatra as a Dakshinayana movement of India, where the influences of the South are carried to the North. [32] [33]
He supports removing English language as a medium of teaching from higher education while opposing replacing it with Hindi. He stated "Bringing Hindi as a substitute for English is as barbaric to me as the dominance of English today." He supports higher education through mother tongues. [34]
In 2008, Yadav received the Malcolm Adiseshiah Award for Development Studies. [35] In 2009, he received the Global South Solidarity Award by the International Political Science Association. [36]
Yadav has published many articles and books. He was an editor and advisor for various publications, such as the European Journal of Political Research , Samayik Varta and the Hindi-language social science anthologies titled Lokchhintan and Lokchintak Granthamala. [12]
Arvind Kejriwal is an Indian politician, activist and former bureaucrat, who served as the 7th Chief Minister of Delhi. He was the chief minister from 2013 to 2014 and from 2015 to 2024. He is also the national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) since 2012. He has represented the New Delhi constituency in the Delhi Legislative Assembly since 2015 and from 2013 to 2014.
Prashant Bhushan is an Indian author and a public interest lawyer in the Supreme Court of India. He was a member of the faction of the India Against Corruption (IAC) movement known as Team Anna which supported Anna Hazare's campaign for the implementation of the Jan Lokpal Bill. After a split in IAC, he helped Team Anna form the Aam Aadmi Party. In 2015, he made several allegations against the party's leadership, its functioning and its deviation from the core ideology, values and commitments. He is one of the founders of Swaraj Abhiyan and Sambhaavnaa, an Institute of Public Policy and Politics.
The Aam Aadmi Party is a political party in India. It was founded on 26 November 2012 by Arvind Kejriwal and his then-companions, following the 2011 Indian anti-corruption movement against then government of Indian National Congress. The AAP is currently the governing party in the Indian state of Punjab and the union territory of Delhi. On 10 April 2023, the AAP was officially granted the status of national party by the ECI. The party's election symbol is a broom. The party is currently part of the coalition I.N.D.I.A. Recently, popular UPSC educator Awadh Ojha joined the AAP.

He is the Co-founder and Editorial Director of SatyaHindi, He was previously associated with IBN 7, an Indian news television channel, as a News anchor and managing editor. On 15 August 2018 Ashutosh resigned from Aam Aadmi Party citing his personal reasons.
Anand Kumar is a retired professor of sociology at Jawaharlal Nehru University, an ex-member of the Aam Aadmi Party, he contested for Lok Sabha from the North East Delhi parliamentary constituency in the 2014 Indian general election but lost to BJP candidate Manoj Tiwari.
The Delhi Legislative Assembly election was held on 7 February 2015 to elect 70 members of the Sixth Legislative Assembly of Delhi. The results were announced on 10 February 2015. The Aam Aadmi Party secured an absolute majority in the assembly, winning 67 of the 70 seats.

It was formed by Yogendra Yadav and anti-corruption activist Prashant Bhushan in Gurgaon following their expulsion from the Aam Aadmi Party. The organisation claims to transform ideology into reality and to achieve Swaraj in all aspects of life - political, economical, social and cultural. On 31 July 2016, Swaraj Abhiyan announced the decision to form a political front, Swaraj India. Subsequently, on 2 October 2016, a political party - Swaraj India was announced, with intention to participate in local body elections to start with.

Aam Aadmi Party Delhi or AAP Delhi is a state wing of Aam Aadmi Party. AAP became a state party in Delhi in 2013. The party contested its first election in Delhi in 2013 and was successful in winning 28 seats in a hung assembly. It got outside support from Indian National Congress and Arvind Kejriwal became the Chief Minister of Delhi but he resigned after 49 days due to differences with INC. In the following 2015 elections, AAP won 67 of the 70 seats in the assembly, limiting BJP at just 3 seats and INC with none and Kejriwal was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Delhi. AAP formed the government again in the subsequent 2020 Delhi Legislative Assembly election, winning 62 seats.
Bharat Jodo Yatra was a mass movement which was held by the Indian National Congress. Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi orchestrated the movement by encouraging the party cadre and the public to walk from Kanyakumari at the southern tip of India to the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, a journey of 4,080 kilometres over almost 150 days.
Swaraj India is a registered unrecognized Indian political party that was launched on 2 October 2016. It was formed by Yogendra Yadav and anti-corruption activist Prashant Bhushan. Avik Saha is the National General Secretary of the registered Party while Christina Samy is the current National President. On 31 July 2016, Swaraj Abhiyan which formed as a political platform on 14 April 2015, announced the decision to form a political front, Swaraj India.
