S. Venkatesan (born 16 March 1970), also known as Su. Venkatesan, is a Tamil writer from Tamil Nadu, India and Tamil Nadu State Committee member of CPI(M). Venkatesan is a state committee member of the Party and a whole-timer of the Party. He is the state Honorary President of Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers and Artists Association.

Early life and education

Su. Venkatesan was born on 16 March 1970 to R. Subburam and Nallamal in Harveypatti, Madurai. He attended Muthuthevar Mukkulathore Higher Secondary School and has a degree in Bachelor of Commerce from Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College in Madurai. He was the editor of the magazine, Semmalar. Semmalar, the literary magazine of CPI(M).

Personal life

Venkatesan is married to P.R. Kamala in 1998 and The couple has two daughters named Yazhini and Tamizhini.

Writing

He was conferred the Sahitya Academy Award for his Tamil novel Kaval Kottam. His recent book Vel Pari was widely well-received among the public. He is well known in the literary field and is popular among general public. His debutant novel Kavalkottam published in 2008 was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for Tamil in 2011. The film Aravaan is based on it. [1] His second novel Veera Yuga Nayagan Velpari was serialised in Tamil popular magazine Ananda Vikatan. [2] He is the general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers and Artists Association. [3]

Political career

S. Venkatesan joined the communist party CPI(M) and is a Member of Parliament from Madurai. Su Venkatesan who contested from Madurai parliamentary constituency secured 4,47,075 (44 per cent) votes defeating his nearest rival (AIADMK candidate) by a margin of 1,34,119 votes." S. Venkatesan contested as CPI(M) candidate in the 2019 Indian general election from Madurai. He was elected to the Lok Sabha with a margin of 1.39 Lakhs of votes. [4]

A lawyer by profession, he was involved in various Communist and left-leaning writers' organisations such as the Democratic Writers Association of India and the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers Association (TNPWA), of which he was an executive committee member. He received the Tamil Nadu Government's literary award for the best novel of 2011 for his work on tannery workers of Southern Tamil Nadu titled Thol. He did the field work for Thol for a decade before writing it. The novel was awarded the Sahitya Akademi award for Tamil in 2012.

Melanmai Ponnusamy was a Tamil writer from Tamil Nadu, India. He was born in Melanmarainadu village [மேலாண்மறை நாடு] in Virudhunagar District. He was a farmer by profession who also ran a grocery shop in his village. He was a Marxist by political orientation and a member of Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M). His first short story was published in 1972 in the literary journal Semmalar. His works have since appeared in mainstream Tamil magazines like Ananda Vikatan and Kalki. He credited Soviet literature as a major influence in his writing style and choice of subjects. His works are set in rural Tamil Nadu and deal with the lives of peasants. As of 2009, he has written 23 short story collections, six novellas, six novels and an essay collection. He was awarded the 2008 Sahitya Akademi Award for his Tamil short story Minsarapoo. He was also awarded the 2009 Makkal TV award for his contributions to Tamil Literature. He was a founder member and the general secretary of the Marxist writers' organisation - Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers Association (TNPWA). He was married to Ponnuthai and had three children. He died on 30 October 2017.

The 2014 Indian general elections for Tamil Nadu's 39 seats in the 16th Lok Sabha were held on 24 April 2014. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam led by its general secretary J. Jayalalithaa won a spectacular victory, taking 37 of the 39 seats. The total electors in the state of Tamil Nadu for the election was 55,114,867 and 73.74% of voters exercised their right to do so. The results of the elections were declared on 16 May 2014.
