This was the first time M. Karunanidhi, contested as the leader of DMK party won the election, since he assumed Chief Ministership for the first time, after the death of C N Annadurai. Karunanidhi had emerged successfully in the leadership crisis (having supported by M. G. Ramachandran, against Nedunchezhiyan, which ensued after the death of C. N. Annadurai. The main opposition party in the election was Indian National Congress led by K. Kamaraj, whereas the Indian National Congress faction aligned with Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. This was the first instance in which the National ruling party which was bent into a coalition where the state party would take all seats for state legislature in exchange for half seats for lok sabha in the state.
The 1996 Indian general election polls in Tamil Nadu were held for 39 seats in the state. The result was a landslide for the newly formed alliance between Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK),Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) and its leader G. K. Moopanar, and the left parties who ended up getting all 39 seats. Post election, the newly formed United Front, ended up getting all the seats from Tamil Nadu, since DMK and TMC joined it,with outside support from Indian National Congress (INC). The results in Tamil Nadu is a reflection of the results nationally, where INC,ended up losing the most seats. This election was seen as redemption for Moopanar and TMC,since they left Congress,on grounds that they formed an alliance with AIADMK,even though J. Jayalalithaa, general secretary of AIADMK,was accused of many corruption charges. This led to a disastrous showing, for AIADMK and Congress in Tamil Nadu, since they lost all 39 seats from the last election, and TMC reaping the benefits by getting the most seats,in this election with 20 seats.
The 1989 Indian general election polls in Tamil Nadu were held for 39 seats in the state. The result was a landslide victory for Indian National Congress, and its ally All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, winning 38 out of 39 seats. This election marked the dominance of INC-AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, till 1996. The opposition party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam failed to win a single seat, resulting in the party's downturn in national and state politics for the coming years. Because National Front won at the national level,Rajya Sabha member Murasoli Maran got a cabinet berth in the new V. P. Singh administration.
The 1984 Indian general election polls in Tamil Nadu were held for 39 seats in the state. The result was a landslide victory for Indian National Congress and its ally All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, winning 37 out of 39 seats. The other 2 seats were won by the opposition,Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. This marks the start of the dominance of INC-AIADMK,for the next decade winning 38 seats in 1989 election and all 39 seats in 1991 election. The allocation of seats were done what was later dubbed,"The M.G.R formula". Where the regional party would contest 70% of the assembly seats and the national party would be given 70% of the Lok Sabha seats.

The result was a landslide victory for the Indian National Congress (Indira) and its ally Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, who won 37 out of 39 seats. Many observers considered it an upset defeat for the ruling state party,All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and its general secretary M. G. Ramachandran, which only won 2 seats—Gobichettipalayam and Sivakasi. Prior to the election,INC leader Indira Gandhi had formed an alliance with the DMK,resulting in an important part of her victory in the nationwide election that returned her to the office of Prime Minister of India.
The 1951–52 Indian general election was the first democratic national election held in India after Independence, and the polls in Madras state were held for 62 constituencies with 75 seats. This State had the second largest number of seats, after Uttar Pradesh. The result was a victory for Indian National Congress winning 35 out of the 75 seats. While the remaining seats were won by left and independent parties, opposed to Congress. However,Congress stalwarts such as N. G. Ranga,Durgabai Deshmukh, and Mosalikanti Thirumala Rao lost in that election from the Telugu-speaking areas then referred as Andhra. Congress lost in 22 out of the 28 seats in majority Telugu-speaking areas. Reason for the poor performance in Andhra region was attributed to the party's delay in the formation of a separate State for Telugu people. It eventually led to the formation of the Andhra State in 1953 and later the linguistic reorganization of Indian states in 1956 where Kannada and Malayalam majority speaking areas were merged with Mysore and Kerala States respectively.
The 2009 Indian general election polls in Tamil Nadu was held for 39 seats in the state.
