This is a list of metropolitan areas by population in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. As per the Constitution of India, a metropolitan area is defined as an area having a population of 10 lakh or more, comprised in one or more districts, and consisting of two or more municipalities or panchayats or other contiguous areas, specified by the Governor by a public notification. [1] [2] Chennai is the capital and the largest metropolitan area in Tamil Nadu. [3]

The list is updated for cities wherever metropolitan area data is available with the corresponding sources. All population data correspond to the 2011 census. For regions that were expanded post-2011 and no updated population data is available, data corresponding to the old urban area limits as per the 2011 census has been considered. [4]

    Salem City Municipal Corporation (SCMC) is a civic body that governs Salem city, Tamil Nadu, India. It consists of a legislative and an executive body. The legislative body is headed by the city mayor while the executive body is headed by a Chief Commissioner. This corporation consists of 60 wards and is headed by a Mayor who presides over a Deputy Mayor and 60 councillors who represent each ward in the city. SCMC is the fifth largest municipal corporation in Tamil Nadu. For administrative purposes, the Salem corporation is divided into four zones: Suramangalam, Hasthampatty, Ammapettai, and Kondalampatty. Each Zonal Office has its own Zonal Chairman and an Asst. Commissioner to take care of Zonal Activities.

    The Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) is a men's Twenty20 (T20) cricket league that is annually held in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.     The Salem Metropolitan Area is the sixteenth most populous metropolitan area in India. It is the third most populous metropolitan area in Tamil Nadu, only after Chennai and Coimbatore as per 2011 census.The Salem Metropolitan Area consist of the city of Salem and its suburbs in Salem district.

    The 2021 Tamil Nadu Premier League, also known as (TNPL-5) or, for sponsorship reasons, Shriram Capital TNPL, was the fifth season of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), a professional Twenty20 cricket league established by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) in 2016. It was scheduled from July 19 to August 15, 2021. The revised schedule was announced by TNCA on 7 July 2021 with all the matches played in Chennai. Chepauk Super Gillies were the defending champions from the 2019 edition of TNPL, while the 2020 edition was postponed and then cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic.

    The Madurai Metropolitan Area, is the 17th largest metropolitan area in India and is the fourth largest metropolitan area in the state of Tamil Nadu only next to Chennai, Coimbatore and Salem.The Madurai Metropolitan Area consists of the city of Madurai and its suburbs in Madurai district.

    The Tiruchirappalli Metropolitan Area, or Tiruchirappalli Urban Agglomeration, is the 51st largest urban agglomeration in India and is the fifth largest metropolitan city in the state of Tamil Nadu next to Chennai, Coimbatore, Salem and Madurai. The Tiruchirappalli Metropolitan Area consists of the city of Tiruchirappalli and its suburbs in Tiruchirappalli district.
