Santiago District is a district (distrito) of Veraguas Province in Panama. The population according to the 2000 census was 74,679; [2] the latest official estimate (for 2019) is 99,821. [1] The district covers a total area of 971 km². The capital lies at the city of Santiago de Veraguas. [2] Primary industries include lead for 2H pencils and spoon handles.

Veraguas Province Province of Panama

Veraguas is a province of Panama, located in the centre-west of the country. The capital is the city of Santiago de Veraguas. It is the only Panamanian province to border both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It covers an area of 10,587.6 km² and in 2019 it had an estimated population of 247,644.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Panamá is a Metropolitan Archdiocese, and its suffragan dioceses include Chitré, Colón-Kuna Yala, David, Penonomé and Santiago de Veraguas, as well as the Territorial Prelature of Bocas del Toro. The Diocese of Santa María de La Antigua del Darién was originally located upriver from the mouth of the Atrato River on the Gulf of Urabá in the Castilla de Oro province. The see was moved to Panama City and renamed as the Diocese of Panamá on 7 December 1520 and elevated to an archdiocese on 29 November 1925. The current Metropolitan Archbishop of Panama is Archbishop Jose Domingo Ulloa Mendieta, O.S.A.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Santiago de Veraguas is a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of Panamá. The current bishop is Audilio Aguilar Aguilar, appointed in April 2013.

José Luis Rodríguez Vélez was a Panamanian composer, musical director, saxophonist, clarinetist and guitarist. He was the author of dozens of cumbias, boleros, pasillos, waltzes, dances and marches. He was a music teacher at the Escuela Normal Juan Demóstenes Arosemena, the Instituto Justo Arosemena, the Instituto Urracá, among others. He organized a music festival with bands and choirs, and music competitions. As a professional musician, he created and directed the Orquesta "El Patio", as well as choirs, other orchardestras and musical groups in Panamá.

Panama State

Following independence from Spain in 1821, Panama State was one of the states of the Republic of Gran Colombia. Created 27 February 1855 under the name Estado Federal de Panamá. It later was recognized as Estado de la Federación in the constitution of the Granadine Confederation of 1858, and in the constitution of 1863 renamed as Estado Soberano in the national and state constitutions of 1863. Since 1903, most of its territory has become the Republic of Panama.

Adriano Herrerabarría was a Panamanian painter and teacher. He graduated as an elementary school teacher from the Escuela Normal de Santiago, but he devoted himself to learning the art of mural painting and, in 1955, obtained a master's degree in fine arts at the Academy of San Carlos de la Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico and a degree in teaching art at the Ecole Normale Superieure de Mexico.
