Saoirse Abu (foaled 20 March 2005) was an American-bred Irish-trained thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the leading European two-year-old fillies of her generation, winning three of her eight races including two of Ireland's most important races for juveniles: the Phoenix Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. She raced three times as a three-year-old in 2008, producing her best effort when a close third in the 1000 Guineas. She was sold for over £2 million at the end of her racing career and became a broodmare in the ownership of Sheikh Mohammed.

Background

Saoirse Abu (an Irish phrase which can be translated as Freedom Forever) is a chestnut mare with a white star bred in Kentucky by White Cloud Bloodstock, Omar Trevino and N & P Partnership. Her sire, Mr Greeley was an American sprinter who won at Grade III level and finished second in the 1995 Breeders' Cup Sprint. [2] Although he was based in the United States throughout his stud career, he had great success in Europe, [3] siring Finsceal Beo and the Sussex Stakes winner Reel Buddy. [4] Saoirse Abu's dam, Out Too Late was an unraced daughter of Morning Has Broken, a mare whose other descendants included Balanchine and the Prix de Diane winner West Wind. [5]

In September 2006, the filly was consigned to the Keeneland yearling sales where she was bought for $260,000 by BBA Ireland. She entered into the ownership of the County Meath-based Ennistown Stud and was sent to Ireland where she was trained by Jim Bolger at Coolcullen, County Carlow. [6] Saoirse Abu was ridden in all but one of her races by Kevin Manning.

Racing career

2007: two-year-old season

Saoirse Abu began her racing career in a six furlong maiden race at Naas Racecourse on 16 May when she finished third of the twenty runners, beaten two lengths and a head by Raja and Pretty Ballerina. Eleven days later, in a similar event at the Curragh, the filly recorded her first success as she took the lead a furlong and a half from the finish and won "easily" [7] by four lengths from the colt Norman Invader.

Saoirse Abu was moved up in class for her next race, the Group Three Swordlestown Stud Sprint Stakes at Naas on 4 June in which she finished second by a length to the Aidan O'Brien-trained You'resothrilling, a filly who went on to win the Cherry Hinton Stakes in England. In the Listed Saoire Stakes at the Curragh at the end of the month, the filly started 9/10 favourite but after racing in second place for the first half of the race, made no further impression and finished of the seven runners behind Listen. In July, she was moved up in distance for the Listed Silver Flash Stakes over seven furlongs at Leopardstown Racecourse. Ridden by D J Dolan (Manning opted to ride a more fancied stable companion), she finished third of the nine fillies behind Triskel and Mad About You. On 12 August Saoirse Abu was again moved up in class for the Group One Phoenix Stakes in which she was matched against colts over six furlongs on heavy ground. Equipped with blinkers for the first time, [8] she was made the 25/1 outsider of the six runner field with Aidan O'Brien's unbeaten Coventry Stakes winner Henrythenavigator starting odds on favourite ahead of the Queen Mary Stakes winner Elletelle. Manning positioned the filly just behind the leaders before taking the lead in the final quarter mile. She was overtaken by Henrythenavigator a furlong from the finish, but rallied strongly to regain the lead in the closing stages and defeat the colt by a length with Elletelle one and three quarter lengths back in third place. Three weeks later, over seven furlongs at the Curragh, Saoirse Abu contested the Moyglare Stud Stakes, Ireland's only Group One race restricted to two-year-old fillies. Despite her previous Group One success, she was only third in the betting behind Listen and the English-trained Albabilia, the winner of the Sweet Solera Stakes. Saoirse Abu raced in third place before moving up to challenge Albabilia in the final quarter mile. She took the lead approaching the final furlong and won "comfortably" [10] by one and a half lengths from Listen, Mad About You and Albabilia. [11] After the race, Jim Bolger said "I have been very happy with her. She is a hardy horse and is very professional. We have no definite plans as yet but I wouldn't be certain she would be seen out again on the track this season. The 1,000 Guineas is the real aim for her next year, and even at this stage, she wants a mile really". [12] On 29 September, the filly was sent to England and moved up in distance for the Group One Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile at Ascot Racecourse in which she was again matched against Listen. Saoirse Abu raced in second place before briefly taking the lead two furlongs out, but was unable to quicken in the closing stages and finished third behind Listen and the French-trained favourite Proviso.

2008: three-year-old season

Saoirse Abu began her second season in the Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial Stakes over seven furlongs on 7 April. She started at odds of 2/1 and kept on well in the closing stages without ever looking likely to win and finished third behind Caribbean Sunset and Halfway to Heaven. Four weeks later, Saoirse Abu started a 20/1 outsider in a field of fifteen for the classic 1000 Guineas over the Rowley Mile at Newmarket Racecourse. Manning restrained the filly behind the leaders and briefly struggled to obtain a clear run approaching the final furlong. She stayed on well in the closing stages to finish third behind Natagora and Spacious, a length behind the winner. [13] On 25 May, the filly started the 7/2 second favourite for the Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh. She was held up by Manning at the back of the thirteen runner field but after moving into contention two furlongs from the finish, was unable to make further progress and finished fifth, behind Halfway to Heaven, Tuscan Evening, Mad About You and Caribbean Sunset.

Saoirse Abu did not race again. On 1 December, she was offered for sale at the Tattersalls Breeding Stock Sale at Newmarket and bought for 1,950,000 guineas by John Ferguson, acting on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed. A representative of the Ennistown Stud commented "Maybe in 10 years' time I'll have a couple of Saoirse Abus out in the field but for me she was too valuable to hold on to". [14]

Breeding career

Saoirse Abu was retired from racing to become a broodmare for Sheikh Mohammed's Dalham Hall stud. To date, she has produced two foals:

Shahtoush Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Shahtoush was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning The Oaks in 1998. In a racing career which lasted from August 1997 to September 1998 the filly ran eleven times and won three races. Shahtoush won only one minor race as a two-year-old, but showed top-class form when she finished third in the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes. In 1998 she finished second in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket Racecourse and then returned to England to win the Classic Oaks over one and a half miles at Epsom. She was beaten in her two remaining races, finishing unplaced in the Yorkshire Oaks and the Irish Champion Stakes.

Again (horse) Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Again was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the leading Irish two-year-old fillies of 2008, when she won three of her five races including the Debutante Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. She recorded her most important win when taking the Irish 1,000 Guineas on her three-year-old debut, but was beaten in her three subsequent races.

Tarascon was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 1997 she was one of the leading fillies of her generation in Ireland winning two of her four races including the Moyglare Stud Stakes. In the following season she became rather temperamental and ran poorly in the 1000 Guineas and the Oaks Stakes, but produced her best form to win the Irish 1,000 Guineas. She retired after winning three of her nine races and had some success as a broodmare.

Red Bloom is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from July 2003 until October 2006 she ran nineteen times, competing in four different countries and won six times as well as being placed on seven occasions. As a juvenile she graduated from a maiden race victory to record her biggest success in the Group One Fillies' Mile. In the following year she was the beaten favourite for the 1000 Guineas but won the Strensall Stakes. She remained in training for two more seasons, winning the Pipalong Stakes and two editions of the Blandford Stakes. Apart from her wins, she reached the frame in the Coronation Stakes, Pretty Polly Stakes, Nassau Stakes and Prix Jean Romanet. At the end of her racing career she became broodmare for her owner, the Cheveley Park Stud.

Listen is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed her best form as a two-year-old in 2007 she won the Listed Saoire Stakes on her debut, finished second in both the Debutante Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes and then recorded her biggest success in the Group One Fillies' Mile. Her subsequent racing career was compromised by injury and she made little impact in two races as a three-year-old. She has had some success as a broodmare in Japan.

Ensconse was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In 1988 she showed considerable promise as she won a twenty-five runner maiden race and the Blue Seal Stakes in her two racecourse appearances. In the following year she won the Nell Gwyn Stakes and finished fourth when favourite for the 1000 Guineas before recording her biggest success when winning the Irish 1000 Guineas. In her two remaining starts she was unlucky in running when sixth in the Prix de Diane and ran second in the Child Stakes. She was retired from racing at the end of the year to become a broodmare but produced only two foals, neither of whom had any success on the racecourse.

Arctique Royale was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old she made only two appearances, winning a maiden race at the Curragh on her debut and then taking the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the same track. She was beaten on her first run of 1982 but then recorded her biggest win in the Irish 1000 Guineas. She was beaten in her last four races and was retired from racing at the end of the year. She had considerable success as a broodmare.

Dance Design is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She competed in five different countries and won seven times from nineteen starts in a track career which lasted from August 1995 to November 1998.

La Collina is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 2011 she won a minor race on her debut and went on to record a 33/1 upset win over a strong field in the Phoenix Stakes. She failed to win in eleven races over the next two years before springing another surprise when taking the 2013 Matron Stakes at odds of 25/1. Apart from her wins, she was placed in the Moyglare Stud Stakes, Silver Flash Stakes, Blue Wind Stakes, Gladness Stakes and Abu Dhabi Stakes.

Priory Belle was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed her best form as a two-year-old in 1995 when she won two of her three races including the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes. She failed to win in three starts in 1996 and was retired to become a broodmare. She had some success as a dam of winners, with the last of her foals being born in 2005.

Bianca Nera British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Bianca Nera was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed her best form as a two-year-old in 1996 when she won the first three of her four races including the Lowther Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. She was retired from racing after two disappointing runs in the spring of 1997. As a broodmare she produced several minor winners including the dam of the multiple Group 1 winner Postponed.

Termagant is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old she was one of the best fillies of her generation in Ireland, winning both of her races including the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes. She failed to win again and ran only four more times over the next two years before being retired from racing.

Miss Beatrix is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 2006 she was one of the best fillies of her generation in Ireland when she won three of eight races including the Moyglare Stud Stakes and the Goffs Million as well as finishing third in the Phoenix Stakes. She ran unplaced in the 1000 Guineas in the following spring and was retired from racing later that year.

Sequoyah is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a juvenile in 2000 she showed high-class form, winning the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes and being placed in both the Railway Stakes and the Debutante Stakes. In the following year she failed to win but ran well against top quality competition to finish fourth in the Irish 1000 Guineas and the Irish Oaks. After her retirement from racing she became a successful broodmare, most notably producing Henrythenavigator.

Necklace is a British, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She had her greatest success as a two-year-old in 2003 when she won two of her four races including the Debutante Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. In the following year failed to win but did finish third in the Beverly D. Stakes and fourth in the Epsom Oaks before being retired from racing with a record of two wins from nine starts in four different counties. She had very little success as a broodmare, producing only one minor winner.

Chelsea Rose is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a track career which lasted from June 2004 until September 2006 she raced in four different countries and won five races over distances ranging from six furlongs to one and a half miles. She showed very promising form as a juvenile in 2004 when she won two of her three races including the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes. In the following year she failed in the Irish Oaks, her principal objective but recorded victories in the Silver Stakes, Ballyroan Stakes and Dance Design Stakes. As a four-year-old in 2006 she failed to win a race but finished second in the Glencairn Stakes, Pretty Polly Stakes and Royal Whip Stakes. After her retirement from racing she became a successful broodmare.

Preseli is an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the best two-year-olds in Ireland in 1999 when she was undefeated in three races including the Debutante Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. In the following spring she took her winning streak to four when she won the Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial but was beaten in her next three races that year, producing her best subsequent effort when narrowly beaten in the Pretty Polly Stakes. In 2001 she raced in North America, but failed to reproduce her European form. As a broodmare she has produced several minor winners.

Twafeaj was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from May 1991 until October 1992 she ran fourteen times in four different countries and won three races. As a juvenile in 1991 she finished second in the Princess Margaret Stakes before recording her biggest win in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes. As a three-year-old she struggled for form early in the year but did much better when switched to sprint races, winning the Prix de Meautry as well as being placed in the Prix Maurice de Gheest and the Goldene Peitsche. She had little success as a broodmare, producing only two minor winners.

Flutter Away was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed her best form as a two-year-old in 1987 when she won three of her five races including the Railway Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes and was rated the best filly of her generation in Ireland. She made no impact in two races as a three-year-old and was retired from racing at the end of the year. She was then exported to become a broodmare in Japan where she produced four winners.

Hydrangea (horse) Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Hydrangea is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. She spent much of her early career being overshadowed by her more illustrious stablemates Rhododendron and Winter. In August 2017 she defeated an exceptionally strong field to win the Matron Stakes and went on to take the British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes.
