Sara Sofia Correia (born 27 May 1993) is a Portuguese singer, specializing in the fado genre. She rose to fame in 2007 after winning the Portuguese singing competition, "Grande Noite do Fado" (Great Fado Night), at the age of 13. [1]

Early life

Sara Correia was born in the Marvila district of Lisbon on 27 May 1993. She grew up inspired by her aunt, Joana Correia, who was also a fado singer. Correia also listened to Amália Rodrigues in her youth, inspired by her interpretation of the fado genre. At age 13, she won the competition "Grande Noite do Fado" (Great Fado Night) and has since toured with other prominent fado singers, such as Celeste Rodrigues, and Jorge Fernando. [2]

Career

2018–2019: Sara Correia

Correia released her eponymous debut album, Sara Correia, in 2018. [3] The album was produced by Diogo Clemente and was released through Universal Music Portugal. Her debut album charted at number eight in the Portuguese charts after release. Post release of the album, Correia toured in countries such as South Korea, Italy, Chile, and India.

2020–present: Do Coração, The Voice Portugal, and Liberdade

In 2020, Correia released her second album, Do Coração (From the Heart). The album was met with positive reviews and was nominated for a Latin Grammy in the category of "Best Portuguese Speaking Roots Music Album". [4] However, the album lost to Ivete Sangalo's Arraía da Veveta.

In 2023, Correia was announced to be one of the coaches on the second season of The Voice Gerações , alongside Mickael Carreira, Simone de Oliveira, and Anselmo Ralph. The series aired in July 2023. Her final act, Grupo Pioneiros, finished in the Top 5 of the competition. [5]

After appearing on The Voice Gerações, Correia was announced to be a coach on the eleventh season of the main version of the show, The Voice Portugal , with Fernando Daniel, Sónia Tavares, and António Zambujo. The series premiered in September 2023 and concluded in January 2024. Correia coached her final artist, Mafalda Vasques, to the finale where she finished in fourth place. [6] In June 2024, it was announced that Correia would return as a coach on the upcoming twelfth season of the show with Daniel, Tavares, and Nininho Vaz Maia. [7]

On 13 October 2023, Correia released her third album, Liberdade (Freedom). [8]

Artistry

In an interview with Songlines in 2022, Correia stated "whatever I sing it will always be fado. I believe a fado singer can sing any song with different instruments and can still sound like fado." [9]

The Voice Portugal is a Portuguese reality singing competition and local version of The Voice, based on the original The Voice of Holland. The series employs a panel of four coaches who critique the artists' performances, and guide their teams of selected artists through the remainder of the season. They also compete to ensure that their act wins the competition, thus making them the winning coach. The original coaching panel consisted of Rui Reininho, Paulo Gonzo, Mia Rose, and the duo Os Anjos. Maria Isabel Rebelo Couto da Cruz Roseta, known professionally as Cuca Roseta, is a Portuguese fado singer, composer, and model. Roseta is considered one of the most important fado representatives of her generation, appearing early in her career in the movie Fados by Spanish director Carlos Saura. Fado, a musical genre that originated in Lisbon in the early 19th century, is traditionally characterized by feelings of resignation and melancholia, but Roseta's style also incorporates more upbeat influences from world music. She has released seven studio albums with producers including Gustavo Santaolalla and Nelson Motta, has toured extensively, and collaborated with different artists including David Bisbal, Karl Jenkins, and Stewart Sukuma. Aconteceu, translated as It Happened, is the second album released by fado singer Ana Moura. It was released in 2004 by Mercury Records and Universal Music Portugal. AllMusic gave the album a rating of three stars. Reviewer Jeff Tamarkin wrote: "[N]early every song on Ana Moura's divine, alluring second album finds the singer heartbreaking.. .. In a full-bodied, commanding voice,. .. Moura. .. deftly displays the requisite over-the-top emotion of fado, sounding utterly natural doing so."

Um Homem na Cidade is an album by fado singer Carlos do Carmo. It was released in 1977 on the Trova label. Carmo was accompanied on the album by guitarists António Chainho and Raul Nery. The author of all the poems is J.C. Ary dos Santos. It was a concept album featuring an array of poems about Lisbon by Ary dos Santos. The album became one of the greatest successes of do Carmo's long career, and was described by Nery as being "one of the most significant albums in the whole fado discography". Um Homem na Cidade evinced a new, innovative style of fado.

The eleventh season of The Voice Portugal is a talent show broadcast on RTP1, which premiered on 17 September 2023. Marisa Liz, Dino d'Santiago, Diogo Piçarra, and Carolina Deslandes all exited the coaching panel and were replaced by returning coach António Zambujo, The Voice Kids coach Fernando Daniel, The Voice Gerações coach Sara Correia, and debutant Sónia Tavares. Catarina Furtado and Catarina Maia returned as main and backstage hostesses, respectively, while Vasco Palmeirim left the program.

Avelino Vaz Maia, better known as Nininho Vaz Maia or Nininho, is a Portuguese singer and songwriter.

The twelfth season of The Voice Portugal is a talent show broadcast on RTP1, which premiered on 22 September 2024. Fernando Daniel, Sara Correia, and Sónia Tavares all returned as coaches from the previous season. Nininho Vaz Maia, who made his debut as a coach on the fifth season of The Voice Kids, joined the panel this season, replacing António Zambujo. Catarina Furtado returned as the main hostess, while Catarina Maia was replaced by Maria Petronilho as the backstage hostess.
