Sarathbabu Elumalai is an Indian entrepreneur, social worker and politician. He is the founder and CEO of FoodKing. [2]

Early life and education

Sarathbabu was born in Madipakkam, a suburb of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. [3] He had four siblings and the family was supported by his mother Deepa Ramani, an Anganwadi worker. [4] [5] She also did various other jobs like making idlis, which Sarathbabu used to sell before going to school. [2]

Sarath did his schooling at Kings matriculation school. [5] He completed his bachelors at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. After completing his graduation, he worked for three years with Polaris. [5] He did his masters in business administration from Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. [6]

Career

After completing his management education, Sarathbabu worked for 2 years. [7] In 2006, he started Food King with a seed capital of ₹2,000 (US$24) for delivering food to institutions. [8] [6] [5] As of 2011, it operates in 6 locations in India with an annual turnover of ₹80 million (US$960,000). [5]

Politics

Sarathbabu contested as an independent candidate from the Chennai South constituency during the 2009 Lok Sabha Elections and managed to secure over 15,000 votes. [9] In 2010, he joined Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, a regional political party, but quit the party later. [10] In the 2011 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, he contested again as an Independent candidate from the Velachery constituency. He lost the elections, ending up third with 7,472 votes. [11] In 2011, Sarathbabu contested for the post of Mayor of Chennai. He is contesting as Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam party's candidate in Alandur (state assembly constituency) in upcoming 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election. [12] [13]

Personal life

In 2010, Sarath started the Hunger Free India, an initiative to feed poor people. [14] [15] [16] He launched an initiative to observe 10 October as Hunger Free Day. [17]

Tamizhaga Murpokku Makkal Katchi, formerly known as Makkal Manadu Katchi, is a regional political party in India, actively involved in the political affairs of Tamilnadu State. The Party came into being in 2005 with the objective of being a people centered, poor friendly political alternative and to spearhead the ideology of self-reliant economy to alleviate poverty, unemployment, backwardness and to eradicate economic disadvantages and social inequalities in the country. The twelfth legislative assembly election of Tamil Nadu was held on 10 May 2001. All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)-led front won the elections and its general secretary, J. Jayalalithaa was sworn in as Chief Minister, even though she could not legally run as MLA in this election. She was unanimously nominated as Chief Minister by her party and was ready to serve her second term. But due to criminal and corruption charges from her first term, on 21 September 2001, a five-judge constitutional bench of the Supreme Court of India ruled in a unanimous verdict that "a person who is convicted for a criminal offense and sentenced to imprisonment for not less than two years cannot be appointed the Chief Minister of a State under Article 164 (1) read with (4) and cannot continue to function as such". Thereby, the bench decided that "in the appointment of Dr. J. Jayalalithaa as Chief Minister there has been a clear infringement of a Constitutional provision and that a writ of quo warranto must issue". In effect, her appointment as Chief Minister was declared null and invalid with retrospective effect. Therefore, technically, she was not the Chief Minister in the period between 14 May 2001 and 21 September 2001. After her resignation on 21 September 2001, she put in O. Panneerselvam, as the official 13th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, until she could clear up the charges from her first term, so she can take up the mantle of Chief Minister officially, on 2 March 2002.

He was elected to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly from Royapuram constituency as an Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate in the 1991, 2001, 2006, 2011 elections and 2016 elections for five terms. During the Tamil Nadu legislative Assembly 2021, he again contested in Royapuram Constituency and lost the election. He served in various cabinet positions starting from 1991 - Forests, Fisheries, Information Technology, Electricity and Finance. He is one among the senior leaders of AIADMK. In October 2020, he was appointed to 11 member Steering Committee of AIADMK and also serves as its Organizing Secretary. In the TN 2021 Election for Royapuram constituency, he was defeated by dmk candidate. He had represented Royapuram five times - 1991, 2001, 2006, 2011 and 2016.

The Fourteenth Legislative Assembly Election was held on 13 April 2011 to elect members from 234 constituencies in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Results were released on 13 May 2011. Two major parties Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) faced the election as coalitions of multiple political parties: DMK front consisted of 8 parties and the AIADMK of 11 parties. Vijayakanth's Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), which had contested the previous elections independently, allied with the AIADMK coalition. Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam boycotted the election following a disagreement with Jayalalithaa over seat-sharing. The outgoing Karunanidhi government was noted for the construction of new assembly building in Chennai, execution of various developmental projects, and implementation of programmes including free health care for the poor and issuance of a range of freebies such as color television to all. However, these were heavily overshadowed by other major issues such as incessant power cuts in households and industries, excessive sand mining, increasing prices of essential items, 2G spectrum case and undue influence of Karunanidhi's extended family in various aspects of Tamil politics and business and even media.

The All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi was an Indian regional political party in the state of Tamil Nadu. It was founded by the former member of parliament of the Republic of India R. Sarathkumar on 31 August 2007. The party was led by Sarathkumar as president until 12 March 2024 from its date of founding. On 12 March 2024, the AISMK was merged into the Bharatiya Janata Party by its founder Sarathkumar, and presided over by K. Annamalai, the state president of the Tamil Nadu BJP.

The Fifteenth Legislative Assembly Election was held on 16 May 2016 for the 232 seats of the Legislative Assembly in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. The AIADMK under J. Jayalalithaa won the elections and became the first ruling party to be re-elected in Tamil Nadu since 1984, though with a simple majority. The DMK won half of the seats it contested but its allies performed poorly; notably, the Indian National Congress won 16% of the seats they contested, and the alliance lost due to its poor performance. The votes were counted on 19 May 2016. In the previous election in 2011, AIADMK, under the leadership of Jayalalithaa, won a thumping majority and formed the government, while DMDK chief Vijayakanth served as the Leader of Opposition until January 2016. This was the last election that J. Jayalalithaa and M. Karunanidhi contested, as they both died later that year and 2018 respectively.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Makkal Needhi Maiam</span> Indian Political party

The Makkal Needhi Maiam is an Indian regional political party in the state of Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Puducherry. The party was founded by Kamal Haasan at Madurai on 21 February 2018. He also unveiled the party flag. The flag is symbolised by six interlocked hands, meant to represent co-operation between the Southern states of india. Their election symbol is a battery torchlight.
