Angenie Anamaria Simon is a Curaçaoan model and beauty pageant titleholder who won the Miss Curaçao 2009 and went to the Miss Universe 2009 in The Bahamas, and the Miss World 2010 in Sanya, People's Republic of China. She earned a place in the national and regional pageant history records by being the first Miss Caraïbes Hibiscus winner who was crowned by a compatriot. Miss Grand Dominican Republic 2016 was the inaugural edition of the Miss Grand Dominican Republic beauty pageant, held on July 5, 2016, at the Cibao Grand Theatre located in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic. Candidates from twenty provinces and municipalities of the country competed for the title, of whom the representative of Dajabón Province, Lucero Arias, was announced the winner, and received cash of RD$400,000 Dominican peso as a reward, while Laura Cruz of Dominican communities in USA and Reisy Sobrino of Santo Domingo Oeste were named the runners-up.

When Bertin was 9 years old, she witnessed her mother's murder and was sent away to the Dominican Republic where she grew up in exile, AOL News reported. There, Bertin learned four languages. She is now a human rights lawyer, as well.
