Design and development

The engine is based on the Volkswagen Wasserboxer engine. It is extensively modified for aircraft use and all the parts are custom made. These engines are derived from the certified engines produced by the same manufacturer and used in several motorgliders and small aircraft. [1] This particular engine must be one of the largest displacement VW conversions that have been built, but it is unknown if it ever entered production.

The Lycoming XR-7755 was the largest piston aircraft engine ever built in the United States, with 36 cylinders totaling about 7,750 in3 (127 L) of displacement and a power output of 5,000 horsepower (3,700 kilowatts). It was originally intended to be used in the "European bomber" that eventually emerged as the Convair B-36. Only two examples were built before the project was terminated in 1946.

The Boland V-8 was an aircraft engine that was developed by the Boland Brothers for use in their tailless aircraft. Between 1908 and 1914, four versions of this motor were produced ranging in power from 60 hp (45 kW) to 125 hp (93 kW). The Boland motors all used an unusual concentric overhead valve. This arrangement positioned the intake valve in the middle of the exhaust valve. These were actuated by a single push rod and rocker arm.
