The Scania N112 (known as the Scania BR112 until 1984) was a transversely-engined step-entrance single-decker bus, double-decker bus and articulated bus chassis manufactured by Scania between 1978 and 1987.
In 1978, Scania ended a decade-long tie-up with Birmingham-based builder Metro Cammell Weymann (MCW) that had resulted in the Metro-Scania single-decker bus and the Metropolitan double-decker bus. MCW subsequently built its own Metrobus chassis as a replacement for the Metropolitan, while in 1980 Scania launched its own replacement, the BR112DH.
The BR112DH was available in two lengths, 9.5m and 10.2m, and was powered by the 11-litre DN11 engine (and later the turbocharged DS11 engine), coupled to either a Scania three-speed or Voith automatic gearbox. [1]
The biggest customer for the BR112DH was Newport Transport, which took 29. [2] These included nine single-decker versions with Wadham Stringer Vanguard bodywork; the double-deckers were bodied by Marshall of Cambridge. Two were built with Alexander RH bodywork for the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive, and two more with Northern Counties bodies for the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive. [3]
There were also four demonstrators, two each with East Lancs and Marshall bodywork. One of the Marshall-bodied demonstrators was exported to the Republic of Ireland in 1981, while one of the East Lancs-bodied buses was exported to Singapore in 1982 after trials with several United Kingdom operators, joining the fleet of Singapore Bus Services as SBS7000E. [4]
One BR112H was bodied by Custom Coaches for Neville's Bus Service in 1983. [5]
In 1984, the BR112DH was re-designated the N112DH (and later N112DRB), with the same length and gearbox options. It was also available as an articulated chassis.
Newport Transport initially continued to be the most significant customer, taking eight Alexander RH bodied N112s at the end of 1984, followed by eight East Lancs-bodied versions in 1986.
However, deregulation and the introduction of route tendering in London were to result in a significant increase in sales and a greater customer base, as past purchasing allegiances were broken. Former National Bus Company subsidiary Brighton & Hove took ten East Lancs-bodied N112s, while Leicester Citybus took four, and Scottish co-operative A1 Service took two. In London, Grey-Green took six East Lancs-bodied versions, while Kentish Bus bought five with Alexander RH bodies, and Boro'line Maidstone two. [6]
There were also six East Lancs-bodied single-decker versions for Kingston upon Hull City Transport, [7] and two for another Scottish co-operative, AA Motor Services.
The N112 was also built as an airport shuttle bus with Van Hool Alizee single-decker coach body and DAF Variomatic transmission, and in this form Capital Coaches of West Drayton ordered 23 on behalf of the British Airports Authority at Heathrow in 1987, while Terminus Securities took one in 1988 for work at Gatwick Airport. In 1987, Centurion bodied a N112 for Kangaroo Flat Bus Lines, Bendigo, [9] while Custom Coaches bodied one for Neville's Bus Service. [5] In 1987/88, Ansair bodied twelve for Metro Tasmania. [10]
One articulated N112ARS was bodied by Denning in 1985 for the Brisbane City Council followed In 1993 by a Volgren bodied example for Invicta Bus Services. [11]
In 1988, Scania introduced its 3-series range of buses and trucks, and the N112 was thus replaced by the new N113.

The Mercedes-Benz O305 was a single deck, double deck and articulated bus manufactured by Mercedes-Benz in Mannheim, West Germany from 1968 until 1988. It was built as either a complete bus or a bus chassis and was the Mercedes-Benz adaptation of the unified German VöV-Standard-Bus design, that was produced by many different bus manufacturers including Büssing, Magirus-Deutz, MAN, Ikarus, Gräf/Steyr, Heuliez, Renault, and Pegaso. The O305 was designed for use as a single-decker bus, however it was later redesigned to accommodate double-decker bodies.

The Dennis Dart is a rear-engined single-decker midibus chassis that was introduced by Dennis Specialist Vehicles of Guildford, England in 1989, replacing the Dennis Domino. Initially built as a high-floor design, In 1996 the low-floor second generation Dennis Dart SLF was launched. In 2001, production of the Dart SLF passed to TransBus International, during which time it was sold as the TransBus Dart SLF; Alexander Dennis took over production in 2004, renaming the product as the Alexander Dennis Dart SLF.
The Dennis Dominator was Dennis's first rear-engined double-decker bus chassis, it was launched in 1977.
The Scania Metropolitan was the first double decker bus model built jointly by MCW and Scania. It was built between 1973 and 1978.
Switch Mobility is an English bus manufacturer based in Sherburn-in-Elmet, North Yorkshire. It is a subsidiary of Indian company Ashok Leyland. The company would be responsible for the EV operations of the group with Ashok Leyland focusing on its core business of diesel-powered vehicles as well as work on alternative fuels like compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG) and hydrogen.
The Volvo Ailsa B55 was a front-engined double-decker bus chassis manufactured in Scotland by Ailsa, Volvo's British subsidiary in which it owned 75%, from 1974 until 1985.
The Volvo B58 was a mid-engined bus chassis manufactured by Volvo in Sweden from 1966 until early 1982. It was succeeded by the B10M.
The Volvo B10M was a mid-engined city bus and coach chassis manufactured by Volvo between 1978 and 2003. It succeeded the B58 and was equipped with the same 9.6-litre horizontally mounted Volvo diesel engine mounted under the floor behind the front axle. An articulated version under the model name Volvo B10MA was also offered, as was a semi-integral version known as the C10M, with the engine in the middle of the chassis.
The Leyland Atlantean is a predominantly double-decker bus chassis manufactured by Leyland Motors between 1958 and 1986. Only 17 Atlantean chassis were bodied as single deck from new.
The East Lancs OmniTown was a low-floor midibus body sold in the United Kingdom by East Lancs and Scania. It used the Scania N94UB chassis, which is the single-decker version of the N94UD double-decker chassis, with East Lancashire Coachbuilders bodywork. It is sometimes mistakenly referred to as the OmniTown chassis. The confusion concerning the chassis, and indeed the buses, arises due to the complexity of the OmniTown's and other Scania products' histories.
The Dennis Falcon was a rear-engined single-decker bus, double-decker bus and coach chassis manufactured by Dennis between 1981 and 1993. It was mostly built as a single-decker bus, although some express coaches and a small number of double-decker buses were also produced. The total number built was 139, plus one development chassis.
The Northern Counties Palatine was a step-entrance 2-axle and 3-axle double-decker bus body built by Northern Counties from 1988 to 1999 in Wigan, England.
The MAN Lion's City is a range of low-floor and low-entry public buses built by German truck and bus manufacturer MAN Truck & Bus since 1996 primarily for the European market, but is also available in chassis-only variants worldwide. The name Lion's City has been used since 2006, when MAN's public bus models which had been marketed separately were gathered into one range, when also most models received a facelift. The first models to be introduced were the 12-metre low-floor intercity bus NÜ xx3 (A20) in 1996, the 12-metre city bus NL xx3 (A21) in 1997 and the articulated NG xx3 (A23) in 1998. As with former MAN bus models the power-rating made up part of the model name, giving the NÜ-series buses with power-ratings of 260 and 310 hp model names NÜ 263 and NÜ 313 respectively. The main production sites are in Starachowice and Sady in Poland, but the models have also been built in Germany, Turkey and Malaysia. Initially most of the midibus variants were manufactured by Göppel Bus in Augsburg, later Nobitz.
The Optare Esteem was a low-floor single-decker bus body manufactured by East Lancashire Coachbuilders, Darwen East Lancs and Optare between 2006 and 2009 on Scania N94UB, Scania N230UB, Volvo B7RLE, MAN 12.240, Alexander Dennis Dart SLF, Alexander Dennis Enviro200 Dart and Alexander Dennis Enviro300 chassis.
The Alexander PS-type was a step-floor single-decker bus body built by Walter Alexander Coachbuilders in Falkirk, Scotland and was produced from 1988 to the late 1990s predominantly on the Dennis Lance, Mercedes-Benz O405, Scania N113, Volvo B10M chassis.
The East Lancs OmniDekka is a double-decker bus built for sale in the UK market, introduced by East Lancashire Coachbuilders in 2003. Originally built on Scania N94UD chassis at Euro 3, and later Scania N230UD and N270UD at Euro 4 and Euro 5, the bodywork consists of a modified East Lancs Myllennium double decker, but with the standard front end cowl and windscreen replaced with that of Scania's own integral OmniCity. Through takeovers of East Lancs, production of the OmniDekka was latterly carried out by the Darwen Group and finally Optare before ceasing in 2011.
