William Scott Scudder (born February 14,1968) is an American former Major League Baseball right-handed pitcher.
Drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the first round of the 1986 MLB amateur draft,Scudder made his Major League Baseball debut with the Cincinnati Reds on June 6,1989,and appeared in his final game on May 22,1993.
On May 20,1988,Scudder pitched a no-hitter for the Cedar Rapids Reds against the Wausau Timbers. [1]
Scudder was a member of the Cincinnati Reds team that defeated the Oakland Athletics in the 1990 World Series. He pitched scoreless innings in both the NLCS against the Pittsburgh Pirates and in the World Series against Oakland.
Though mainly a starter during his career,Scudder did pick up one save;on April 17,1991,Scudder pitched three shutout innings to close out a 5-1 victory over the Padres. [2]
On February 1,2010,Scudder was announced as a new coach at Team Sweden,along with Dennis Cook. [3]
Thomas Leo Browning was an American left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball who played from 1984 to 1995,spending almost his entire career with the Cincinnati Reds. In his rookie season in 1985,Browning won 20 games and was runner-up for the National League (NL) Rookie of the Year Award;he was the Reds' first 20-game winner in 15 years,and equalled the most wins by a Cincinnati lefthander since 1925. He quickly became a mainstay in the team's pitching rotation,leading the NL in games started four of the next five years. Browning pitched the twelfth perfect game in major league history on September 16,1988,against the Los Angeles Dodgers,just the third perfect game by a lefthander;it was the highlight of a season in which he was 18–5,posting the league's second-highest winning percentage. He helped the Reds to a sweep in the 1990 World Series,winning Game 3 against the defending champion Oakland Athletics. In 1991,his last full season,Browning was named to the NL All-Star team.
The 1990 World Series was the championship series of Major League Baseball's (MLB) 1990 season. The 87th edition of the World Series,it was a best-of-seven playoff played between the defending champions and heavily favored American League (AL) champion Oakland Athletics and the National League (NL) champion Cincinnati Reds. The Reds defeated the Athletics in a four-game sweep. It was the fifth four-game sweep by the NL and second by the Reds after they did it in 1976. It was the second consecutive World Series to end in a sweep,after the Athletics themselves did it to the San Francisco Giants in 1989. It is remembered for Billy Hatcher's seven consecutive hits. The sweep extended the Reds' World Series winning streak to nine games,dating back to 1975. This also was the second World Series meeting between the two clubs. As of 2023,this remains both teams' most recent appearance in the World Series.
