Scott Spann Jr. (born May 11, 1988) is a former American competition swimmer and Pan American Games medalist.
At the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, Spann won the 200m breaststroke in 2:09.97, earning a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team roster. [1] Spann also placed third in the 100m breaststroke at trials in 1:00.59. [2]
At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, Spann placed sixth overall in the 200m breaststroke in 2:09.76. [3]
In September 2008, following the Olympics, Spann had surgery to remove a piece of bone that had broken off of his patella and embedded in his tendon. Previously diagnosed as tendonitis, Spann believes he sustained the injury in late 2007 or early 2008 during dryland weight training. Spann swam in a tri-meet for Texas against Michigan and Indiana only a few weeks after surgery. A second surgery followed in November to remove the bursa sac, which had swelled because he began swimming too soon after the first surgery, and to reshape the tendon, which had been frayed by the patella. Spann then developed a staph infection from the surgical wounds. He needed three more surgeries to fight the infection. [4] Spann missed the rest of the 2008–09 NCAA season, his first with Texas after transferring from Michigan.
With only 45 days to train, and time for preparation, he competed at the 2009 USA Nationals and World Championships Trials. Spann placed fourth in both the 100m and 200m breaststrokes, narrowly missing the chance to compete at the World Championships in Rome, Italy. [5] [6]
Spann competed for Michigan from 2006 to 2008. While swimming for Michigan, Spann placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke and fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke at the 2008 NCAA Championships. Spann transferred to Texas in 2008, after his sophomore year. In his junior year at Texas, Spann placed 2nd in both the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststrokes at the 2010 NCAA Championships. He helped lead the Longhorns to a first-place finish at the NCAA National Championship. Spann was elected to be one of three captains (alongside Jim Robertson and Bryan Collins) for the 2010-11 Texas Longhorns swimming and diving team, finishing as the runner-up at the NCAA National Championships.
Spann broke school records at two of the top swimming schools in the nation. At the University of Michigan, Spann broke the 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard medley relay. At the University of Texas, Spann broke the 200-yard breaststroke team record previously held by Olympic gold medalist and world record-holder Brendan Hansen.
Spann graduated from Suffolk University Law School in 2019. He is a personal injury attorney at the Derrick Law Office in Simpsonville, South Carolina. [7]
Spann's father, Scott Spann Sr., is a six-time U.S. swimming champion and won the bronze medal in the 200-meter individual medley at the 1979 Pan American Games. His sister, Alexi Spann, was the 200-meter breaststroke champion at the 2003 Pan American Games.
Brendan Joseph Hansen is an American former competition swimmer who specialized in breaststroke events. Hansen is a six-time Olympic medalist, and is also a former world record-holder in both the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke events.
Peter William Vanderkaay is an American former competition swimmer who specialized in middle-distance freestyle events and is a four-time Olympic medalist. He was a member of the United States Olympic team in 2004, 2008, and 2012, and won bronze medals in the 200-meter freestyle at the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 400-meter freestyle at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Edwin Charles Reese is an American college and Olympic swimming coach, and a former college swimmer. Reese serves as the head coach of the Texas Longhorns men's swimming and diving team that represents the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. He previously served as the men's head coach for the United States' Olympic Swimming Team in 2004 and 2008, as well as an assistant coach at the 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2012 Summer Olympics. He is widely regarded as the greatest swim coach in history.
Kathleen Elizabeth Hersey is an American competition swimmer who represented the United States at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics and finished fourth in the 200-meter butterfly in 2012.

Lydia Alice Jacoby is an American professional swimmer. She was the first Alaskan to qualify for an Olympic Games in swimming, competing at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 2021, where she won the gold medal in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:04.95, which was the fastest time ever achieved by a female American swimmer in the event in the 17–18 age group. Later in the year, she was the overall highest scoring female American competitor at the 2021 FINA Swimming World Cup. In 2022, she became the fastest female American swimmer in history in the 100-yard breaststroke for the 17–18 age group with a national age group record time of 57.54 seconds. In 2023, she further lowered the record to a time of 57.45 seconds, then 57.29 seconds, and set a national age group record of 2:04.32 for the girls 17–18 age group in the 200-yard breaststroke. She is the 2023 NCAA Division I champion in the women's 100-yard breaststroke.
Shaine Casas is an American professional swimmer. He is an Americas record holder in the short course 4×50 meter medley relay, swimming the butterfly leg of the relay. At the 2021 World Short Course Championships, he won the gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke, a silver medal in the 200-meter backstroke, and placed seventh in the 50-meter backstroke. In 2022, at the year's World Aquatics Championships, he won the bronze medal in the 200-metre backstroke. Later in the year, at the 2022 World Short Course Championships, he won the silver medal in the 200-metre backstroke and placed fourth in the finals of the 100-meter individual medley and 200-meter individual medley.
Josh Matheny is an American competitive swimmer specializing in breaststroke events. He is a world junior record holder in the 4×100 meter mixed medley relay. He won the gold medal and the national title in the 100 meter breaststroke at the 2022 US National Championships. At the 2019 World Junior Championships, he won gold medals in the 200 meter breaststroke and 4×100 meter mixed medley relay as well as silver medals in the 100 meter breaststroke and 4×100 meter medley relay. He competes collegiately for Indiana University.
