Hemocyanins (also spelled haemocyanins and abbreviated Hc) are proteins that transport oxygen throughout the bodies of some invertebrate animals. These metalloproteins contain two copper atoms that reversibly bind a single oxygen molecule (O2). They are second only to hemoglobin in frequency of use as an oxygen transport molecule. Unlike the hemoglobin in red blood cells found in vertebrates, hemocyanins are not confined in blood cells but are instead suspended directly in the hemolymph. Oxygenation causes a color change between the colorless Cu(I) deoxygenated form and the blue Cu(II) oxygenated form.
Centipedes are predatory arthropods belonging to the class Chilopoda of the subphylum Myriapoda, an arthropod group which includes millipedes and other multi-legged animals. Centipedes are elongated segmented (metameric) creatures with one pair of legs per body segment. All centipedes are venomous and can inflict painful bites, injecting their venom through pincer-like appendages known as forcipules. Despite the name, centipedes can have a varying number of legs, ranging from 30 to 382. Centipedes always have an odd number of pairs of legs; no centipede has exactly 100. Like spiders and scorpions, centipedes are predominantly carnivorous.
Scutigera coleoptrata, also known as the house centipede, is a species of centipede that is typically yellowish-grey and has up to 15 pairs of long legs. Originating in the Mediterranean region, it has spread to other parts of the world, where it can live in human homes. It is an insectivore; it kills and eats other arthropods, such as insects and arachnids.
Myriapods are the members of subphylum Myriapoda, containing arthropods such as millipedes and centipedes. The group contains about 13,000 species, all of them terrestrial.
Scutigera is a centipede genus in the scutigeromorph family Scutigeridae, a group of centipedes with long limbs and true compound eyes. It compose of more than 30 species, including the most common and well-studied Scutigera coleoptrata.
Woodsia is a genus of ferns in the order Polypodiales. In the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group classification of 2016 (PPG I), it is the only genus in the family Woodsiaceae, placed in the suborder Aspleniineae. The family can also be treated as the subfamily Woodsioideae of a very broadly defined family Aspleniaceae sensu lato. Species of Woodsia are commonly known as cliff ferns.
Erich Martin Hering was a German entomologist who specialised in leafmining insects, He was a curator in the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin, where his collections of Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Diptera are conserved. His collections of Agromyzidae are shared between MfN and the Agricultural School at Portici now part of the University of Naples Federico II.
Allothereua maculata is a species of centipedes found in Australia known as the house centipede – a name applied elsewhere to other species.
Scutigeridae is a family of centipedes. It includes most of the species known as house centipedes, including Scutigera coleoptrata and Allothereua maculata.
Thereuonema tuberculata is a centipede species in the family Scutigeridae. It is native to China, the Korean peninsula, and Japan, and has recently been identified as an introduced species in North America where it is found primarily in the eastern United States, but has been found as far west as Nebraska. In its introduced range it is commonly confused with Scutigera coleoptrata.
Dendrothereua is a genus of house centipedes in the family Scutigeridae. There are at least three described species in Dendrothereua, found in the southern United States and the Neotropics.
Scutigera aethiopica is a species of centipede in the family Scutigeridae. It is found in Ethiopia and Uganda.
Scutigera argentina is a species of centipede in the family Scutigeridae.
Scolopendra hardwickei, the Indian tiger centipede, is a species of centipede in the family Scolopendridae.
Scolopendra cataracta is a species of centipede in the family Scolopendridae. It is the first known amphibious centipede, growing to up to 20 centimetres (7.9 in) in length.
Cormocephalus elegans is a species of centipede of the family Scolopendridae found in North Africa.
Gmelina asiatica is a plant species, described by Linnaeus, in the family Lamiaceae. No subspecies are listed in the Catalogue of Life.
Ablabesmyia philosphagnos is a species of fly described by Günther Beck von Mannagetta und Lerchenau in 1966. No sub-species specified in Catalogue of Life.
Scutigera linceci, the Arizona house centipede is a species of the Scutigeromorph centipede found in the Southern United States and Central America. Its species name refers to Dr Lincecum, a field naturalist. In the wild, they live under stones and in hollow logs, but the species frequently enters human habitation.
