Sean Mannion (boxer)

Sean Mannion (born 6 October 1956 in Rosmuc, County Galway, Ireland) is a former boxer in the light middleweight division. [1] [2] During his career he was based in and boxed out of Massachusetts in the United States. His most notable bout was against Mike McCallum for the vacant WBA title, which he lost over a fifteen-round unanimous decision. In January 2014, Rocky Ros Muc: Seán Ó Mainnín, a biography about Mannion's life and career, written by Rónán Mac Con Iomaire, was released. The book is written in Irish but an English version was also released. [3] A film adaptation was released in July 2017 under the same title, produced and directed by Michael Fanning. RTÉ Documentary on One made a programme about Sean's story - Never Knocked Down - produced by Robert Mulhern which won gold in the 2015 Celtic Media Awards. [4]

Joseph "Jack" Doyle, known as "the Gorgeous Gael", was an Irish boxer, professional wrestler, actor, and a tenor. He was born Joseph Doyle but changed his name to Jack when starting his professional career. Considered a boxing prodigy in his youth, Doyle was a contender for the British Boxing Heavyweight Championship. However, his promising boxing career was destroyed by the emergence of his alcoholism, which he would continue to battle with for the rest of his life. In the early to mid-1930s he would attempt to launch both singing and acting careers, but was pulled back into the world of boxing only to be humiliated in a number of first-round knockouts. In the 1950s Doyle turned his hand to professional wrestling, playing up to his former "Gorgeous Gael" moniker with a character inspired by Gorgeous George.

Proinsias Mac Aonghusa was an Irish journalist, writer, TV presenter and campaigner. Born into an Irish-speaking household, Mac Aonghusa became one of the most noted Irish language broadcasters and journalists of the 20th century, appearing as the presenter of Irish-language programming for RTÉ, UTV and BBC and as a journalist for newspapers both domestic and international. Influenced by family friends Peadar O'Donnell and Máirtín Ó Cadhain as well as his own parents growing up, Mac Aonghusa pursued Irish republican and socialist politics as an adult and was heavily involved in the Labour Party during the 1960s, at one point serving as its vice-chairman.
