The Semitropic Oil Field is an oil and gas field in northwestern Kern County in California in the United States, within the San Joaquin Valley. Formerly known as the Semitropic Gas Field, it was discovered by the Standard Oil Company of California in 1935, and first understood to be primarily a natural gas reservoir; however, in 1956 a much deeper oil-bearing zone was discovered. The field contains the deepest oil well ever drilled in California, at 18,876 feet (5,753 m). [1] At the end of 2008 the field still had 56 active oil wells, most of which were owned by Occidental Petroleum, and the field had an estimated 343,000 barrels of oil still recoverable with current technology. Setting

The Semitropic field is one of the oil and gas fields in the southern San Joaquin Valley which is underneath the bottomlands of the valley, rather than in the hills which surround it. Most of the largest fields are in the lower parts of the foothills to the mountains on either side of the valley, including monstrous reservoirs such as the Kern River and Midway-Sunset fields; in the bottomlands, the fields are more deeply buried and harder to find, as they have no surface geological expression, such as a line of hills indicating an anticlinal structure hiding an oil reservoir. Like many of the fields on the west side of the valley, it is an elongate dome aligned from northwest to southeast. The field is about seven miles (11 km) long by two across, at the widest point, and has a productive area of 4,430 acres (17.9 km2). [3]

The field parallels Interstate 5 about five miles (8 km) to the northeast. California State Route 46, the Paso Robles Highway, cuts across the northern extremity of the field from east to west, about 12 miles (19 km) east of Lost Hills. The town of Wasco is about eight miles (13 km) farther east along the same route. Several small abandoned oil and gas fields adjoin the Semitropic field from the southeast to the southwest, and the small Wasco Oil Field (with only three wells remaining active) is immediately adjacent to the east. The nearest large and still active oil field is the Lost Hills field, about 13 miles (21 km) to the west-northwest.

Terrain in the vicinity of the oil field is almost table-flat, with elevations ranging from approximately 250 to 280 feet (85 m) above sea level throughout the productive region, with a very slight gradient from south to north towards the Tulare Lake bed. The Semitropic Ridge, a gentle topographic prominence with a mean elevation of about twenty feet above the oil field, parallels the field to the southwest, separating it from Interstate 5. Climate is typical of the valley bottom in the south, which is arid. Temperatures in the summer routinely exceed 100 °F (38 °C) on typically cloudless days. Rain falls mainly in the winter months, and averages 5 to 6 inches (150 mm). Freezes occur occasionally during the winter, and the winter months are also subject to frequent dense tule fogs, limiting visibility to near zero. Drainage from the field in generally into the irrigation canal system, but because of the flat surface gradient most rainfall soaks directly into the ground. [4]

Land use in the vicinity of the field is predominantly agricultural, with oil and gas production, storage, and transportation infrastructure interspersed with orchards and row crops. Little native vegetation remains as all the land has been converted to agricultural use. Roads cross the region at right angles, following township, range, and section lines, as do irrigation canals.

Geology

The Semitropic field resembles the other three natural gas reservoirs in the southern San Joaquin Valley – the Buttonwillow, Trico, and Paloma gas fields – in being a northwest-to-southeast trending ellipsoidal dome, with the topmost unit containing commercial quantities of gas within a geologic formation known as the San Joaquin Clay. [5] [6] None of this geologic structure is visible on the ground surface since the Central Valley is wide and flat, but enough wells had been drilled in the general vicinity to give early prospectors the idea that a petroleum reservoir might be nearby.

Underneath several hundred feet of Holocene-age alluvium, deposited by thousands of years of runoff from the mountains that ring the Central Valley, is the Pleistocene Tulare Formation, which forms an impermeable cap to the underlying San Joaquin Clay, the principal gas-bearing unit. This unit varies in thickness from 2,200 to 4,400 feet (1,300 m), and has an average porosity of 28%. [7] Drillers of early boreholes had determined that deeper formations contained oil, but since it never flowed, those prospectors guessed that the permeability of the units was insufficient for the field ever to be commercially viable. [8] Wells drilled in 1956 and subsequent years, however, proved this wrong. Underneath the San Joaquin Clay is the Etchegoin Formation, which contains the Randolph Pool, a unit which turned out to be moderately productive. Its average depth is 7,400 feet (2,300 m) and the oil-bearing, highly porous subunit has a thickness of about 100 feet (30 m). Beneath this unit are several other rock units with no oil, including 4,000 feet (1,200 m) of the Monterey Formation; but underneath several other rock layers yet another oil pool was found in the Oligocene-age Vedder Sands, at a depth of 17,610 feet (5,370 m). This unit produced from only a single well, from 1975 until it was abandoned in 1977, and was the deepest oil-producing unit ever exploited in California. Oil from this depth was light, with an API gravity of 42, and came up with a temperature of 300 °F (149 °C), along with a reservoir pressure of 8,200 psi. [9]

History, production, and operations

Richfield Oil Company, ancestor of ARCO and then part of BP, drilled the first well into the field in 1929, but the well was poorly placed and failed to find a commercially viable gas or oil zone. [10] Several other firms tried the area, with mixed luck: Shell Oil drilled a well all the way to 9,700 feet (3,000 m), but both oil and gas failed to produce, though they showed in drill cuttings; Fullerton Oil drilled seven separate holes, one of which blew out ten million cubic feet of gas per day, but then stuck shut, and had to be abandoned. In 1935, Standard Oil Company of California finally was able to complete a gas well which was self-sustaining at 3,193 feet, and was therefore considered the discovery well for the field. [11] [12]

Peak gas production for the field was in 1942, and peak oil was in 1981. The field changed ownership several times in its history. Recent operators have included Pacific Energy Resources and Occidental Petroleum. Pacific Energy sold the field – which amounted to 75 wells – in October 2008 to Vintage Production, a subsidiary of Occidental. Vintage still runs the field as of early 2010. [13]

Discovered in 1909, and having a cumulative production of approximately 667 million barrels (106,000,000 m3), it is the tenth-largest oil field in California. As of year end 2006 the field had a total reserve of only about one percent of its original oil, and having produced a mere 713,000 barrels (113,400 m3). Since, the field has gone through a revitalization. Crimson Resources initiated a waterflood in the Etchegoin Formation, saw good response and sold the asset to Occidental Petroleum. CRC continued the development of the waterflood, but also tested the viability of the Monterey Formation. The Monterey Formation at Buena Vista has proven to be a viable target and is currently being developed.

The Ventura Oil Field is a large and currently productive oil field in the hills immediately north of the city of Ventura in southern California in the United States. It is bisected by California State Route 33, the freeway connecting Ventura to Ojai, and is about eight miles (13 km) long by two across, with the long axis aligned east to west. Discovered in 1919, and with a cumulative production of just under a billion barrels of oil as of 2008, it is the tenth-largest producing oil field in California, retaining approximately 50 million barrels in reserve, and had 423 wells still producing. As of 2009 it was entirely operated by Aera Energy LLC.

The Rincon Oil Field is a large oil field on the coast of southern California, about 10 miles (16 km) northwest of the city of Ventura, and about 20 miles (32 km) east-southeast of the city of Santa Barbara. It is the westernmost onshore field in a series of three fields which follow the Ventura Anticline, an east-west trending feature paralleling the Transverse Ranges. Discovered in 1927, the oil field is ranked 36th in California by size of recoverable oil reserves, and while mostly depleted – now having, by California Department of Conservation estimates, only about 2.5% of its original oil – it remains productive, with 77 wells active at the beginning of 2008. Oil produced in the field flows through the M-143 pipeline, which parallels U.S. Highway 101 southeast to the Ventura Pump Station, at which point it joins a Tosco pipeline which carries it to Los Angeles area refineries. As of 2009, the primary operators of the field were Occidental Petroleum for the onshore portion, and Greka Energy for the offshore portion. The offshore part of the field is operated mainly from Rincon Island.

The San Miguelito Oil Field is a large and currently productive oil field in the hills northwest of the city of Ventura in southern California in the United States. The field is close to the coastline, with U.S. Highway 101 running past at the base of the hills, and is sandwiched between the larger Ventura Oil Field to the east and the Rincon Oil Field, which is partially offshore, to the north and northwest. Discovered in 1931, and with about 7 million barrels of oil remaining out of its original 125 million, it ranks 44th in the state by size, and at the beginning of 2009 had 61 producing oil wells, all operated by Vintage Production California LLC, a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum.

The Oxnard Oil Field is a large and productive oil field in and adjacent to the city of Oxnard, in Ventura County, California in the United States. Its conventional oil reserves are close to exhaustion, with only an estimated one percent of the original oil recoverable with current technology remaining: 434,000 barrels (69,000 m3) out of an original 43.5 million. However, the reservoir includes an enormous deposit of tar sands, ultra-heavy oil classed as an unconventional petroleum reserve, and potentially containing 400 million barrels (64,000,000 m3) of oil equivalent, should it become economically feasible to extract. Present operators on the field include Tri-Valley Oil & Gas Co., Anterra Energy Services, Inc., Chase Production Co., and Occidental Petroleum through its Vintage Production subsidiary. As of the beginning of 2009, there were 34 active wells on the field.

The Saticoy Oil Field is an oil and gas field in Ventura County, California, in the United States. The field is a long narrow band paralleling the Santa Clara River near the town of Saticoy. Discovered in 1955, it is one of the smaller but productive fields found in the region after most of the large fields had already been operational for decades. At the beginning of 2009 it still contained an estimated 387,000 barrels (61,500 m3) of recoverable oil out of its original 23.5 million, and had 15 wells remaining in operation. Vintage Production, a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum, was the primary operator on the field as of 2009.

The Rio Vista Gas Field is a large natural gas field in the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta in northern California, adjacent to Rio Vista, California. Discovered in 1936, and in continuous operation since, it has produced over 3.6 trillion cubic feet (100 km3) of gas in its lifetime, and retains an estimated reserve of approximately 330 billion cubic feet (9.3×109 m3). In 2008 alone, the most recent year for which data was available, it produced 18 billion cubic feet (510,000,000 m3) of gas. The Mountain View Oil Field is a large, mature, but still-productive oil field in Kern County, California, in the United States, in the extreme southern part of the San Joaquin Valley southeast of Bakersfield. It underlies the town of Arvin, as well as some smaller agricultural communities. The field is spread out across a large area, covering just under 8 square miles (21 km2), with wells and storage facilities widely dispersed throughout the area, scattered among working agricultural fields of broccoli and carrots as well as citrus orchards. Discovered in 1933, it has produced over 90 million barrels (14,000,000 m3) of oil in its lifetime, and although declining in production is one of the few inland California fields in which new oil is still being discovered.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Edison Oil Field</span> Oil field in Kern County, California

The Edison Oil Field is a large oil field in Kern County, California, in the United States, in the southeastern part of the San Joaquin Valley and adjacent foothills east-southeast of Bakersfield. The field has a total productive area of over 8,000 acres (32 km2), most of which is intermingled with agricultural land uses; oil pumps and storage tanks are surrounded with row crops and orchards in much of the field's extent. Discovered in 1928, and with a cumulative production of 149 million barrels (23,700,000 m3) of oil as of 2008, and having over 6 million barrels (950,000 m3) in reserve, it is ranked 38th among California's oil fields by total ultimate recovery. It is a mature field in decline, and is run entirely by small independent operators. As of 2008, there were 40 different oil companies active on the field, one of the most in the state for a single field. 914 wells remained active on the field, averaging only two barrels of oil per well per day from the dwindling reservoirs.

The Cat Canyon Oil Field is a large oil field in the Solomon Hills of central Santa Barbara County, California, about 10 miles southeast of Santa Maria. It is the largest oil field in Santa Barbara County, and as of 2010 is the 20th-largest in California by cumulative production.
