Sergei Tchoban (German: Sergej Tschoban; born 9 October 1962) is a German Architect and artist working in various cities in Europe. He is managing director of the architectural firm TCHOBAN VOSS Architekten [1] and founder of the Tchoban Foundation, [2] which has been based in the Museum for Architectural Drawing [2] in Berlin, built for this purpose, since 2013. He is a member of the Association of German Architects (BDA) and the architectural associations in Hamburg [3] and Berlin. [4] Tchoban is the recipient of architectural awards and a participant in various architectural exhibitions.

Sergei Tchoban was born in Leningrad, Soviet Union (now Saint Petersburg, Russia) into a family of scientists. [5] His father, Enver Abdurakhmanovich Choban, was a physicist and professor at the Polytechnic University, and his mother, Irina Solomonovna Choban, worked there as a turbine engineer. His grandfather, Solomon Abramovich Kantor, was also a professor at the Polytechnic University.
From 1973 to 1980, Tchoban attended the Middle Art School of the Academy of Arts, and from 1980 to 1986 he studied at the Architecture Faculty of the State Academic Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (class of Sergei Speranski and Valeryan Volonsevich). [6] After graduating, he worked in the architectural workshop of Weniamin Fabrizkij until 1989, when he started working as a freelance architect in Leningrad. [5]

In 1991, Tchoban moved to Germany and obtained German citizenship, thus renouncing his Russian citizenship. [6] In 1992 he was employed by the Hamburg office of Nietz Prasch Sigl, where he became a partner in 1995 and subsequently took over the Berlin branch. The office first changed its name to nps und partner Architekten BDA in 1996, then to nps tchoban voss Architekten in 2003, and after its re-establishment in 2017 it was given its current name, TCHOBAN VOSS Architekten. [7]
Sergei Tchoban's designs were implemented in Berlin including the timber hybrid office ensemble EDGE Suedkreuz Berlin, [8] the new development Rosenthaler Strasse 43-45 with the Apple Store Rosenthaler Straße, [9] the TechnoCampus Berlin, [10] the office buildings Greifswalder Strasse 226 [11] and Boxhagener Strasse 80, [12] the Coca-Cola Germany headquarters, [13] the AquaDom, [14] Mall of Berlin complex, [15] ,the Jewish Cultural Center and Synagogue Chabad Lubavitch on Munsterstrasse, [16] NHow hotel, [17] the building of the Museum of Architectural Drawing, [18] a number of residential buildings including Living Levels, [19] Ackerstrasse 29, [20] the Koenigstadt-Quartier, [21] Embassy, [22] 3 Höfe or Schoenegarten [23] as well as revitalisation projects such as Ernst-Reuter-Platz 6, [24] Blissestrasse 5 [25] or the Neue Kranzler Eck. [26]
Sergei Tchoban is a draughtsman and collector of architectural drawings. With the aim of reviving public interest in the art of architectural drawing, he founded the Tchoban Foundation in 2009, which supports the Museum of Architectural Drawing in Berlin, which opened in 2013. [27] In 2020, Tchoban was president of the American Society of Architectural Illustrators (ASAI), [28] of which he has been a member since 1992. His drawings have been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries worldwide and can be found in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Albertina in Vienna, the Museu Oscar Niemeyer in Curitiba, the Museo della Grafica in Pisa, the Istituto Centrale per la Grafica in Rome, the Akademie der Künste and the Mies van der Rohe - House in Berlin, the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) in Frankfurt/Main as well as in numerous private collections. In 2018, Sergei Tchoban was awarded the European Prize for Architecture by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design for his complete works. [6] [30]
