Seth Ariel Tongay is an American materials engineer internationally recognized for next-generation semiconductor manufacturing towards civilian and national security applications . He was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers in 2019 by President Donald Trump and the White House [1] [2] . He has been recognized as a Fellow of the American Physical Society in the United States and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry in the United Kingdom.

He is one of the research directors at the College of Engineering and the chair of Materials Science and Engineering at Arizona State University. He serves as an associate editor at the American Institute of Physics (AIP) Applied Physics Reviews [3] and Nature 2D materials & applications by Nature. [4]

Recognition

His work received several prestigious awards including one from the President of the United States Donald Trump Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers [1] [2] given to outstanding scientists and engineers in the U.S. by the White House. His work has resulted in the prestigious National Science Foundation CAREER Award [5] [6] and the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World award. From 2019-2023, his work has seen him identified as one of the most influential researchers over the past decade by Clarivate Analytics and Web of Science. [7] [8] [9] Google Scholar statistics independently identified him as one of the top 10 researchers in the world in the area of quantum materials [10] and the top 50 in two-dimensional materials. [11]

Research and career

He earned doctorate degree at the University of Florida where he studied materials physics working with Prof. Dr. Arthur F. Hebard [12] and a postdoctoral fellowship in materials science and engineering at the University of California, Berkeley and Stanford with Prof. Dr. Junqiao Wu. [13] He is known for his patent integrating conductive graphene into flexible displays, solar cells, and touch screens. [14] His notable and most cited work includes synthesis of 2D and quantum materials, 2D Janus materials, the discovery of quasi-1D materials including Rhenium disulfide (ReS₂), [15] graphene-based high-power devices, [16] and graphene solar cells. [17] [18] [19] His research often uses alloying, defects engineering, dopants, and manufacturing techniques to create a new set of functionalities. His other seminal contributions discovery of exciton complexes in ultra-thin 2D semiconductors [20] .

He has participated in major government and state-level initiatives. In late 2023, the U.S. federal government selected his team within the White House initiative, the CHIPS Act, to initiate the development of manufacturing processes for next-generation semiconductors, catering to future electronics and infrared technologies. [21] Lab-to-fab integration efforts are funded by Intel and Applied Materials. The State of Arizona has awarded the Arizona Water Innovation Initiative, which aims to develop innovative and manufacturable engineering solutions for accessing clean water. [22] [23]

Jean-Pierre Leburton is the Gregory E. Stillman Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and professor of Physics at the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign. He is also a full-time faculty member in the Nanoelectronics and Nanomaterials group of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology. He is known for his work on semiconductor theory and simulation, and on nanoscale quantum devices including quantum wires, quantum dots, and quantum wells. He studies and develops nanoscale materials with potential electronic and biological applications.

Xu Jianbin is the Choh-Ming Li Professor of Electronic Engineering and director of the material research center at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). He is also a Distinguished Research Fellow at the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, one of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Irina Grigorieva, Lady Geim is a Professor of Physics at the University of Manchester and Director of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council Centre for Doctoral Training in Science and the Applications of Graphene. She was awarded the 2019 David Tabor Medal and Prize of the Institute of Physics and was elected as a Fellow of the Institute.

Pinshane Yeh Huang is an Associate Professor of Materials Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. She develops transmission electron microscopy to investigate two-dimensional materials. During her PhD she discovered the thinnest piece of glass in the world, which was included in the Guinness World Records. Huang was awarded the 2019 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers.

Joan M. Redwing is an American materials scientist known for research on electronic and optoelectronic materials, including the processing of semiconductor thin films and nanomaterials by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Redwing is a distinguished professor of materials science and engineering and electrical engineering at Pennsylvania State University and director of the university's 2D Crystal Consortium research facility. She is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physical Society, and the Materials Research Society.

Monica Felicia Crăciun is a British-Romanian physicist who is a Professor of Nanoscience at the University of Exeter. Her research investigates 2D Materials for civil engineering, wearable technologies and optoelectronic devices. Craciun has pioneered the incorporation of graphene into concrete, wearable technologies and optoelectronic devices.

Chun Ning "Jeanie" Lau is an American physicist who is a Professor of Quantum Materials at Ohio State University. Her research considers materials for quantum technologies, including van der Waals materials and superconductors. She was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2017.

Michael G. Spencer is a computer scientist, electrical engineer, and professor at Morgan State University's Clarence M. Mitchell Jr. School of Engineering in Baltimore. His research and studies is concentrated on semiconductors, microwave devices, and solar cells.

Tomás A. Palacios Gutiérrez is a Spanish–American Electrical & Microelectronics Engineer known for his work in advanced device and material design. He holds the chair Clarence J. LeBel Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and director of Microsystems Technology Laboratories (MTL). Palacios is known for inventing a super-thin 'sheet' that can charge mobile phones with out electricity.
