Robert Eugene Richards was an American athlete, minister, and politician. He made three U.S. Olympic Teams in two events: the 1948, 1952, and 1956 Summer Olympics as a pole vaulter and as a decathlete in 1956. He won gold medals in pole vault in both 1952 and 1956, becoming the only male two-time champion in the event in Olympic history.
Yelena Gadzhievna Isinbayeva is a Russian former pole vaulter. She is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, a three-time World Champion, the world record holder in the event, and is widely considered the greatest female pole-vaulter of all time. Isinbayeva was banned from the 2016 Rio Olympics after revelations of an extensive state-sponsored doping program in Russia, thus dashing her hopes of a grand retirement after winning the Olympic gold medal. She retired from athletics in August 2016 after being elected to serve an 8-year term on the IOC's Athletes' Commission.

Annemarie Moser-Pröll is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from Austria. Born in Kleinarl, Salzburg, she was the most successful female alpine ski racer during the 1970s, with an all-time women's record of six overall titles, including five consecutively. She had most success in downhill, giant slalom and combined races. In 1980, her last year as a competitor, she secured her third Olympic medal at Lake Placid and won five World Cup races. Her younger sister Cornelia Pröll is also a former alpine Olympian.
Dmitri Markov is a retired Belarusian-Australian pole vaulter. He is a former world champion and current Oceanian record holder. His gold medal winning jump at the 2001 World Championships made him the third person ever to clear 6.05 metres or 19 feet 10 inches.

Ian Scott Waltz is an American discus thrower. He is originally from Post Falls, Idaho and attended Washington State University. Waltz competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics and the 2008 Summer Olympics. His personal best distance is 68.91 metres, achieved in May 2006 in Salinas, California.

The pole vault at the Summer Olympics is grouped among the four track and field jumping events held at the multi-sport event. The men's pole vault has been present on the Olympic athletics programme since the first Summer Olympics in 1896. The women's event is one of the latest additions to the programme, first being contested at the 2000 Summer Olympics – along with the addition of the hammer throw, this brought the women's field event programme to parity with the men's.
Angelica Moser is a Swiss athlete whose specialty is pole vaulting. She won the 2021 European Championships in Toruń and reached the final of the World Championships in Doha in 2019. Her personal bests in the event are 4.75 metres outdoors and 4.75 metres indoors.
Marijke Moser, née Van de Graaf is a former Dutch-born Swiss middle and long distance runner. She has campaigned for women to enter races on the same terms as men. She was the first woman to run a marathon in under three hours.
Felix Böhni is a Swiss athlete. He competed in the men's pole vault at the 1980 Summer Olympics and the 1984 Summer Olympics, finishing seventh in 1984. While competing for San Jose State University, he was the 1983 NCAA Champion in the pole vault.
