Sfax Desalination Plant is a sea water desalination plant under construction in the city of Sfax in Tunisia. [1] The facility is under development by the Tunisian water utility company, National Company for the Exploitation and Distribution of Water (French: Société Nationale d’Exploitation et de Distribution des Eaux) (Sonede). [2]
A consortium of European and Egyptian companies has been selected to carry out the mechanical, civil and hydrological engineering works on the project. Construction is expected to take 54 months with completion anticipated in the first half of 2026. [3] [4]
The desalination plant would be located on a site measuring 20 hectares (49 acres), [3] in the community of Gargour, Tunisia, approximately 20 kilometres (12 mi), south of the city of Sfax, in the Sfax Governorate. [1] [2]
Sfax is the second-largest city in Tunisia, and is located about 267 kilometres (166 mi) by road, south of Tunis, the capital and largest city in that country. [5]
The main objective of this project is to improve the "quantity and quality of drinking water" available to the inhabitants of Sfax City and Sfax Governorate. Before the implementation of this infrastructure project, the supply of potable water in the vicinity of Sfax City was severely constrained. Residents have expressed their displeasure regarding the supply of drinking water availed to them. [2]
The project involves the construction the laying of salt water intake pipes from the Mediterranean Sea, building of the desalination plant, laying of the brine discharge pipes back to the sea, a pumping station, a fresh-water storage facility and piping to take the fresh water to where it will enter the Sfax City water system. [2] [3]
Other infrastructure developments include the construction of a 15 kilometres (9 mi) 150kV high voltage electricity transmission line that will bring the 40 megawatts to the desalination plant. The power line is expected to comprise 40 pylons. A substation will be built at the desalination plant, to mediate the wattage and amperage between the plant and power line. [3]
A consortium of three companies was awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract, in August 2021. The table below details the members in the consortium. [4]

The electrical installations, including the 150kV transmission line and the switchyard (substation) are the responsibility the Tunisian electricity utility company, Tunisian Company of Electricity and Gas (STEG). [3]
As part of he EPC contract, the Construction Consortium will operate the plant for a minimum of two years, before handing it over to Sonede. [4]
The total budget for the project is reported as US$350 million (approx. €300 million or TND:960 million). [1] Of the total an estimated €250 million (approx. $295 million or TND:800 million) was financed as a loan to the government of Tunisia, by the Japanese government, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The loan is repayable over a 25-year period, with a grace period of 7 years. [3]

Mpatamanga Hydroelectric Power Station, also Mpatamanga Power Station, is a planned 350 megawatts (470,000 hp) hydroelectric power project to be constructed in Malawi.

Chollet Hydroelectric Power Station is a 600 megawatts (800,000 hp) hydroelectric power station under development across the Ngoko River, in Cameroon and the Republic of the Congo in Central Africa. The construction contract was awarded to China Gezhouba Group Company (CGGC), in May 2021.
Cuamba Solar Power Station (CSPS), is a 20 megawatts (27,000 hp) solar power plant under construction in Mozambique. The power station is under development by a consortium that comprises a British independent power producer and an American investor. A storage system consisting of lithium batteries with a capacity of 1.86 MVA/7.42 MW/h, will be incorporated in the design. The storage system will regulate the rate of delivery of the energy into the national grid and thereby stabilize the network. TSK Group, a Spanish engineering and construction conglomerate was awarded the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract in May 2021.
Ngodwana Biomass Power Station, also Sappi Ngodwana Biomass Power Station, is a 25 MW (34,000 hp) biomass-fired thermal power plant under development in South Africa. Ngodwana Energy Limited, a South African independent power producer was awarded the concession to design, finance, construct, operate and maintain the power station.
Ayebo Biomass Power Station, also Biovéa Biomass Power Station, is a 46 MW (62,000 hp) biomass-fired thermal power plant under development in Ivory Coast. Biovéa Énergie SA, a special purpose vehicle company, has been awarded the concession contract to design, finance, construct, operate and maintain the power station. As raw material, the power station is designed to use palm oil waste.
The Golomoti Solar Power Station is a 20 MW (27,000 hp) solar power plant, under construction in Malawi. The power station is being developed by a consortium comprising InfraCo Africa of the United Kingdom and JCM Power, a Canadian independent power producer. The solar farm is expected to come online during the fourth quarter of 2021.
The Tulu Moye Geothermal Power Station, is a 50 MW (67,000 hp) geothermal power station, under construction in Ethiopia. When fully developed, the power station will be the first grid-ready independently developed geothermal power station in the country. The developers of this power plant, plan to expand it to 150 megawatts capacity, in the second phase, planned in the following five years.
Kinguélé Aval Hydroelectric Power Station is a planned 35 megawatts (47,000 hp) hydroelectric power station, across the Mbei River, a tributary of the Komo River, in Gabon. The power station is the first grid-ready, privately owned hydroelectric power station in the country.
The Singrobo Hydroelectric Power Station, also Singrobo-Ahouaty Hydroelectric Power Project, is a hydroelectric power station under construction across the Bandama River, in Ivory Coast. When completed, as expected in 2023, the power station will be the first, grid-ready hydroelectric power station, developed and owned by a independent power producer (IPP) in West Africa. The energy generated here will be sold to the Ivorian electric utility company, Cienergues, under a 35-year power purchase agreement (PPA).
The Boikanyo Solar Power Station is a 50 MW (67,000 hp) solar power plant in South Africa. It is a grid-connected, privately owned and privately funded solar power station. The power station, which took about one year to construct, reached "grid code compliance" on 9 April 2021 and provided 450 construction jobs.
The Gourou Banda Solar Power Station is a planned 50 MW (67,000 hp) solar power plant in Niger. This renewable energy infrastructure project will be developed by an independent power producer (IPP), under the build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) model, with support from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, as part of the bank's "Scaling Solar" program. The solar farm, first conceived in 2018, as a 20 megawatts installation, was expanded to capacity of 50 megawatts in 2020.
Djermaya Solar Power Station (DSPS) is a planned 60 MW (80,000 hp) solar power plant in Chad. The solar farm is under development and is owned by a consortium comprising (a) Aldwych International Limited, a subsidiary of Anergi Group and (b) Smart Energies. The power station will be developed in phases. Phase 1, with capacity of 32 megawatts will be developed first. Phase 2, with capacity of 28 megawatts will be developed after Phase 1.
The Ghoubet Wind Power Station is a 60 megawatts wind power energy project, under construction in Djibouti. The wind farm is under development by independent power producers. The power generated will be sold to Electricité de Djibouti (EDD), the national electricity utility monopoly, for integration into the national gird. The wind farm is the country's first grid-ready renewable energy power station. The Republic of Djibouti has plans to derive all its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
The Nagreongo Solar Power Station, also Nagréongo Solar Power Station, is a 30 MW (40,000 hp) solar power plant under construction in Burkina Faso. The solar farm is under development by the French IPP, GreenYellow, a subsidiary of the Casino Group. The energy generated here will be sold to the Burkinabe electricity utility company SONABEL,, under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA).
The Sfax Waste To Methane Gas Project is a proposed plant to convert solid waste into methane gas, by the facilitation of anaerobic digestion of organic waste in a new plant in Sfax, Tunisia's second-largest city. The estimated 1,900,000 cubic meters (1.9×109 L) of methane from the future waste-to-energy plant is expected to fuel a fleet of 800 automobile taxis every year. The project is a joint venture between four Tunisian government entities; (a) the City of Sfax (COS) (b) the National Oil Distribution Company (AGIL) (c) the National Agency for Energy Management (ANME) and the Commissariat à l’énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (CEA-PRO).
The Khan Solar Power Station, is a 20 megawatts (27,000 hp) solar power plant under construction in Namibia. The project is owned and under development by Access Aussenkehr Solar One Namibia a Namibian independent power producer (IPP), based in Windhoek, the country's capital city. The energy generated here will be purchased by NamPower, the national electricity utility company, which is wholly owned by the government of Namibia. A 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA), governs the terms under which the energy will be sold and bought.
