Shafiqul Islam (born 30 October 1962) is a retired police officer who served as the 34th police commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. [1] He was made the DMP commissioner on 14 September 2019. [2] He previously served as the chief of the Criminal Investigation Department. [3]
Islam was born on 30 October 1962 at Alamdanga in Chuadanga District of the then East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). [4] He graduated in agriculture from Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University in 1984. [2] He joined Bangladesh Police force on 20 December 1987 through 8th BCS Examination. [5]
Islam joined the Bangladesh Police as the assistant superintendent of police through 8th BCS. In his career he served as superintendent of railway police of Saidpur,Narayanganj District,8th Armed Police Battalion of Sylhet District,Patuakhali District,Police Staff College,2nd Armed Police Battalion of Chittagong District,Sunamganj District and Comilla District. Being additional deputy inspector general,Islam served as additional commissioner of police,Chittagong Metropolitan Police. Later as DIG he served as commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police. He had previously been the deputy inspector general of Chittagong Range and Dhaka Range. [6] [7] In 2015,he was transferred from commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police to the deputy inspector general of Telecommunication &Information Management. [8]
After being promoted to the rank of additional inspector general,he served as additional IG of Anti-Terrorism Unit,additional IG (HRM) at Police Headquarters and additional IG of Criminal Investigation Department. [9] He had been appointed chief of Criminal Investigation Department in May 2019. [10] He took the charge of commissioner,Dhaka Metropolitan Police on 7 September 2019. [6] He was elected president of Bangladesh Police Service Association in January 2020. [11] [12] In October 2021,his term at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police was extended by one year. [13] He reported to the media that some citizens of Bangladesh had gone to Afghanistan to join the Taliban. [14] He retired from active police service on 29 October 2022. He has been appointed as member of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC) on 12 May 2023. [15]

It plays a crucial role in maintaining peace,and enforcement of law and order within Bangladesh. Though the police are primarily concerned with the maintenance of law and order and security of persons and property of individuals,they also play a big role in the criminal justice system. The Criminal Investigation Department is a specialized intelligence and investigation wing of the Bangladesh Police. It is headquartered in Malibagh,Dhaka and maintains a training school named the Detective Training School. Personnel attached to this wing essentially work in plain clothes. Mohammad Ali Mia,BPM,PPM is the head of the Criminal Investigation Department.
Habibur Rahman is a former Bangladeshi police officer. He served as 35th commissioner of DMP. Prior to join here he was head of the Tourist Police. From 2019 to 2022,he was deputy inspector general (DIG) of Dhaka Range,and DIG of administration and discipline at the police headquarters in Dhaka. He was sent into retirement from government service in public interest according to the provisions of section no. 45 of the Public Service Act,2018.
The CT-Cyber Crime Investigation,former Cyber Security &Crime Division,commonly known as the Cyber Crime Unit,is a division of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime is operated under Dhaka Metropolitan Police of Bangladesh Police. The main function of this division is to counter terrorism in cyber space. It also patrol,prevent,detect and investigate cyber-terrorism and cyber-crime in Dhaka Metropolitan.
Md. Monirul Islam is former additional inspector general of the Bangladesh Police who served as head of the Special Branch.
Asaduzzaman Mia,is a retired Bangladeshi police officer who served as the 33rd Police commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police,the longest serving commissioner and a former chief executive officer of National Security Affairs Cell under the Cabinet Division. During his tenure as DMP Commissioner,Dhaka Metropolitan Police was considered to be at its peak.
Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun is a Bangladeshi police officer who was sacked for involvement in mass killing during the Bangladesh student protest. He is now in custody. Mamun served as the 31st Inspector general of Bangladesh Police (IGP) who served from 30 September 2022 to 6 August 2024. Previously,he served as director general of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). He was made the DG of RAB in April 2020. Prior to joining RAB,he was the chief of Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Banaj Kumar Majumder is a Bangladeshi retired police officer. He was additional IGP of the Bangladesh Police and former chief of the Police Bureau of Investigation. Prior to joining PBI,he was additional commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police in the rank of additional DIG. He came into limelight when he was SP of Cox's Bazar District.
Harun-or-Rashid is a former police officer who served as the chief of the detective branch of Bangladesh police. On 13 August 2024,he was named as one of the 7 accused in the illegal shooting and killing of various students across Dhaka during the Bangladesh Quota Reform Movement along with former prime minister Sheikh Hasina,former minister Obaidul Quader,former minister Asaduzaman Khan Kamal and police officer Biplob Kumar Sarker. According to various media reports,he has either absconded or been admitted at an unknown hospital in Dhaka after being lynched by a mob due to his orders of shooting at students. He is known for his controversial actions.
Mohammad Ali Mia is a retired Bangladeshi police officer who was additional inspector general of police in the Bangladesh Police. He served as the chief of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Earlier,he was the chief of the Tourist Police. He was posted in different posts of Bangladesh Police. Among them,he served as police's special branch (SB) DIG,Additional DIG of Dhaka Range as well as SP of Habiganj and Manikganj districts.
