Shahada Wells (born August 26, 1999) is an American college basketball player for the McNeese Cowboys of the Southland Conference. He previously played for the Tyler Junior College Apaches, UT Arlington Mavericks, and TCU Horned Frogs.

High school career

Wells attended Tascosa High School in Amarillo, Texas. [1] As a senior, he averaged 21.1 points, 7.2 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game, before committing to play college basketball at Tyler Junior College. [2]

College career

As a sophomore at Tyler Junior College, Wells averaged 21.6 points, 6.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.4 steals, being named the player of the year in the region. [3] As a result, he was named a first-team NJCAA All-American. [4]

After graduating from Tyler Junior College, Wells joined the UT Arlington Mavericks. In his only season at UTA, Wells led the team in points, steals, assists, and minutes played, making an immediate impact. [5] Following the season, he entered the transfer portal.

In April 2021, Wells announced that he would be transferring to Texas Christian University to play for the TCU Horned Frogs. [6] [7] After playing sparingly during his first season at TCU, he made an impact coming off the bench the following season. [8] [9] Following the conclusion of his second season with TCU, Wells entered the transfer portal for a second time. [10]

In April 2023, Wells announced that he would be transferring to McNeese State University to play for the McNeese Cowboys. [11] [12] He began the season with multiple games scoring over 30 points, including a 36-point performance against UAB which led to him being named the conference player of the week. [13] [14] On December 29, 2023, in a game against Michigan, Wells tallied 30 points, ten rebounds, six assists and five steals, helping lead McNeese to their first victory over a Big Ten program in school history. [15] As a result, he was named the conference player of the week. [16] [17] He was also named the national player of the week for his performance. [18] At the conclusion of the regular season, Wells was named the Southland Player of the Year as well as the Newcomer of the Year. [19] Against Nicholls in the Southland championship game, he scored 27 points, helping lead McNeese to their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2002 and being named tournament MVP. [20] [21]

Cowboy Stadium is a 17,610-seat multi-purpose stadium in Lake Charles, Louisiana. It is home to the McNeese Cowboys football team, and is affectionately referred to as "The Hole". It was transformed for the 2008 season to artificial turf. The playing surface is named Louis Bonnette Field, in honor of McNeese's longtime sports information director. Louis' son, Matthew, succeeded him in the post and continues to hold it as of July 2016. The playing surface was replaced prior to the 2018 football season with Hellas Matrix turf. The $650,000 new surface as well as drainage improvements were funded by the same donor, Robert Noland, as for the 2008 installation.

The Southland Conference's men's basketball tournament began in 1981, with the winner of the tournament receiving the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship.

The Southland Conference's Women’s Basketball Tournament began in 1983, with the winner of the tournament receiving the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament. There was no tournament from 1984-1987, but in 1988 the season-ending tradition returned for good, with a format much as in the men's tournament, with opening rounds at the home court of the higher seed, and a designated location thereafter.

The Southland Conference baseball tournament is the conference championship tournament in baseball for the Southland Conference. The winner of the tournament receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I baseball tournament.

Terry Dale Burrows is an American former professional baseball pitcher. He is 6 feet 1 inch (1.85 m) tall, weighs 185 pounds (84 kg), and batted and threw left-handed. Burrows attended McNeese State University, where he played college baseball for the Cowboys. He was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the seventh round of the 1990 MLB draft. Terry played four years in Major League Baseball, two with the Rangers (1994–1995), and one each with the Milwaukee Brewers (1996) and San Diego Padres (1997). In 50 career games pitched, Burrows had a 2–2 record with an ERA of 6.42. He also pitched one season in the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) for the Orix BlueWave in 2000.

The Southland Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year is an award given to the Southland Conference's (SLC) most outstanding player. The award was first given following the conference's inaugural basketball season of 1963–64. Five players have won the award two times: Jerry Rook, Larry Jeffries, Andrew Toney, Ryan Stuart and Thomas Walkup. No player has ever won three times. McNeese has the most all-time winners with nine. Among current SLC members, three have never had a winner: Houston Christian and Incarnate Word, both of which joined in 2013, and Texas A&M–Commerce, which joined in 2022.

John William Rudd is an American former basketball player for the New York Knicks. He played forward. He was listed at 6'7" and 230 pounds. He was born on August 7, 1955, in DeRidder, Louisiana. He attended McNeese State University. His first game was on October 31, 1978.

The 1976 Independence Bowl was a post-season college football bowl game between the Tulsa Golden Hurricane and the McNeese State Cowboys on December 13, 1976, at State Fair Stadium in Shreveport, Louisiana. McNeese State upset a heavily favored Tulsa 20–16. This was the first-ever edition of the Independence Bowl, which drew its name from the ongoing celebrations of the United States Bicentennial.

The Battle of the Border is the name of the athletics rivalry between the Cardinals and Lady Cardinals of Lamar University and Cowboys and Cowgirls of McNeese State University. Originally in football, the rivalry now covers all sports. The 2023 McNeese Cowboys baseball team represented McNeese State University during the 2023 NCAA Division I baseball season. The Cowboys played their home games at Joe Miller Ballpark and were led by tenth–year head coach Justin Hill. They are members of the Southland Conference.

Tyler Guyton is an American football offensive tackle for the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the TCU Horned Frogs and Oklahoma Sooners. Guyton was drafted 28th overall by the Cowboys in the 2024 NFL draft.
