Shahada Wells (born August 26, 1999) is an American basketball player who last played for Peja of the Kosovo Basketball Superleague. He previously played for the McNeese Cowboys, Tyler Junior College Apaches, UT Arlington Mavericks, and TCU Horned Frogs.

High school career

Wells attended Tascosa High School in Amarillo, Texas. [1] As a senior, he averaged 21.1 points, 7.2 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game, before committing to play college basketball at Tyler Junior College. [2]

College career

As a sophomore at Tyler Junior College, Wells averaged 21.6 points, 6.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.4 steals, being named the player of the year in the region. [3] As a result, he was named a first-team NJCAA All-American. [4]

After graduating from Tyler Junior College, Wells joined the UT Arlington Mavericks. In his only season at UTA, Wells led the team in points, steals, assists, and minutes played, making an immediate impact. [5] Following the season, he entered the transfer portal.

In April 2021, Wells announced that he would be transferring to Texas Christian University to play for the TCU Horned Frogs. [6] [7] After playing sparingly during his first season at TCU, he made an impact coming off the bench the following season. [8] [9] Following the conclusion of his second season with TCU, Wells entered the transfer portal for a second time. [10]

In April 2023, Wells announced that he would be transferring to McNeese State University to play for the McNeese Cowboys. [11] [12] He began the season with multiple games scoring over 30 points, including a 36-point performance against UAB which led to him being named the conference player of the week. [13] [14] On December 29, 2023, in a game against Michigan, Wells tallied 30 points, ten rebounds, six assists and five steals, helping lead McNeese to their first victory over a Big Ten program in school history. [15] As a result, he was named the conference player of the week. [16] [17] He was also named the national player of the week for his performance. [18] At the conclusion of the regular season, Wells was named the Southland Player of the Year as well as the Newcomer of the Year. [19] Against Nicholls in the Southland championship game, he scored 27 points, helping lead McNeese to their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2002 and being named tournament MVP. [20] [21]

It was transformed for the 2008 season to artificial turf. The playing surface is named Louis Bonnette Field, in honor of McNeese's longtime sports information director. Louis' son, Matthew, succeeded him in the post and continues to hold it as of July 2016. The playing surface was replaced prior to the 2018 football season with Hellas Matrix turf. The $650,000 new surface as well as drainage improvements were funded by the same donor, Robert Noland, as for the 2008 installation.

Tascosa High School is a public high school located in Amarillo, Texas (USA) and classified as a 5A school by the UIL. It is one of four high schools in the Amarillo Independent School District located in southern Potter County. The school was opened in 1958. In 2015, the school was rated "Met Standard" by the Texas Education Agency. The school's motto is Non Sibi Sed Omnibus, a Latin phrase meaning "Not for oneself, but for all."

Terry Dale Burrows is an American former professional baseball pitcher. He is 6 feet 1 inch (1.85 m) tall, weighs 185 pounds (84 kg), and batted and threw left-handed. Burrows attended McNeese State University, where he played college baseball for the Cowboys. He was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the seventh round of the 1990 MLB draft. Terry played four years in Major League Baseball, two with the Rangers (1994–1995), and one each with the Milwaukee Brewers (1996) and San Diego Padres (1997). In 50 career games pitched, Burrows had a 2–2 record with an ERA of 6.42. He also pitched one season in the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) for the Orix BlueWave in 2000.

John William Rudd is an American former basketball player for the New York Knicks. He played forward. He was listed at 6'7" and 230 pounds. He was born on August 7, 1955, in DeRidder, Louisiana. He attended McNeese State University. His first game was on October 31, 1978.

The 1976 Independence Bowl was a post-season college football bowl game between the Tulsa Golden Hurricane and the McNeese State Cowboys on December 13, 1976, at State Fair Stadium in Shreveport, Louisiana. McNeese State upset a heavily favored Tulsa 20–16. This was the first-ever edition of the Independence Bowl, which drew its name from the ongoing celebrations of the United States Bicentennial.

The Battle of the Border is the name of the athletics rivalry between the Cardinals and Lady Cardinals of Lamar University and Cowboys and Cowgirls of McNeese State University. Originally in football, the rivalry now covers all sports. In 2009, the rivalry was expanded to include "...head-to-head and SLC [Southland Conference] Championship competition in 14 different sports...". Justin Hill is an American college baseball coach and former player, who is the current head baseball coach of the McNeese Cowboys. He was named to that position prior to the 2014 season.
