Shamsul Alam (born 1 January 1951) is a Bangladeshi economist, and a former State Minister of Planning of Bangladesh from 19 July 2021 until 19 November 2023. He retired as a member and the Senior Secretary of the Bangladesh Planning Commission. [2] He is also one of the syndicate members of Sylhet Agricultural University. In recognition of his contribution in economics, the government of Bangladesh awarded him the country's second highest civilian award Ekushey Padak in 2020. [3] He is the member of Awami league Advisory council.

Early life

Alam was born on 1 January 1951 at Matlab Uttar in Chandpur of the then East Bengal (now Bangladesh). [4] He graduated in 1965 from the then East Pakistan Agricultural University (now Bangladesh Agricultural University) with a degree in agricultural economics and received his post-graduate degree in 1973. [4] In 1983, he received a post-graduate degree in economics from Thammasat University and obtained his PhD in the same subject from Newcastle University in 1991. [4]

Career

Alam served as a faculty member of Bangladesh Agricultural University during 1974–2009. He worked as a member of General Economics Division (GED) from 2009 until 30 June 2021. [5]

Ekushey Padak is the second highest civilian award in Bangladesh, introduced in memory of the martyrs of the Bengali Language Movement of 1952. The award is given to recognize contributions in a number of fields, including culture, education, and economics. The Ministry of Cultural Affairs administers the award.

Comilla Victoria Government College is a college in Comilla, Bangladesh. It is one of the oldest and most renowned colleges in Comilla as well as in the Chittagong division. The college is located beside of Ranir Dighi on 32 acres of land including its intermediate and honors section.

Abul Hayat is a Bangladeshi actor. He is also a writer, civil engineer and director. He earned Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for the film Daruchini Dwip (2007) and was awarded Ekushey Padak for his acting in 2015 by the Government of Bangladesh. He portrayed the Misir Ali character in the television film, Onno Bhuboner Cheleta.

Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad is a Bangladeshi economist and development thinker and activist. He is currently the chairman of Dhaka School of Economics (DScE), a constituent institution of the University of Dhaka, devoted to post-graduate studies in economics and related subjects. He is former chairman of Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF), which is largest rural development funding, skill development and management support agency in Bangladesh. Shamsuzzaman Khan was a Bangladeshi academician, folklorist, and writer who served as president of Bangla Academy since June 2020 until his death in April 2021. He also served as the director general of the academy during 2009–2018. He was notable for editing book series on folk culture of 64 different districts in 64 volumes and collections of folklore series in 114 volumes. He was awarded Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2001, Ekushey Padak in 2009 and Independence Day Award in 2017 by the Government of Bangladesh.

Sanat Kumar Saha is a Bangladeshi educator, economist and Tagore exponent. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2015 by the Government of Bangladesh. He served as a professor of economics at the University of Rajshahi. He is a former member of the board of directors of Bangladesh Bank.

Jahangir Alam Khan is a Bangladeshi agricultural economist and researcher. He is the incumbent Vice Chancellor of the University of Global Village (UGV). Prior to his appointment in the university, he was the director general of Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI). He also served as a director of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council. In recognition of his contribution in research, the government of Bangladesh awarded him the country's second highest civilian award Ekushey Padak in 2020.
