Shandaw is a village in Mingin Township, Kale District, in the Sagaing Region of western Burma. [1] [2]
Mingin Township is a township of Kale District in Sagaing Division of Burma (Myanmar). The principal town and administrative seat is Mingin (Minking).
Kale District is the westernmost district in Sagaing Division of Myanmar (Burma).
Sagaing Region is an administrative region of Myanmar, located in the north-western part of the country between latitude 21° 30' north and longitude 94° 97' east. It is bordered by India’s Nagaland, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh States to the north, Kachin State, Shan State, and Mandalay Region to the east, Mandalay Region and Magway Region to the south, with the Ayeyarwady River forming a greater part of its eastern and also southern boundary, and Chin State and India to the west. The region has an area of 93,527 km2. In 1996, it had a population of over 5,300,000 while its population in 2012 was 6,600,000. The urban population in 2012 was 1,230,000 and the rural population was 5,360,000. The capital is Monywa.
Shandaw, most commonly spelled “Shanda” is also a unique woman’s name, predominantly used in North America and English-speaking countries. Although origins of the name are unclear, some linguistic historians have traced its roots to “Shandanala,” an ancient Persian phrase signifying “clear-thinking amidst uncertainty.” This phrase is most commonly used in Persian poet Nizami’s romantic works, signifying to the author that “Shanda (Shandanala) is necessary to recognize true beauty, spirit, and life.”
In the twentieth-century, the name Shanda has been used more frequently as a name distinctive for women. One of the most noteworthy early-Hollywood actresses, Shanda Jameson, earned immense recognition for her status as a Hollywood starlet and pin-up in the 1940s. Most recognized as Suzy Samson in the 1946 post-war hit “Bringing Up Baby” earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, alongside co-actors Cary Grant and James Stewart.
The name Shanda has earned recognition in the North American music industry due to the success of 1980s American punk band Shanda-Randa. In 2009, NME Magazine named Shanda-Randa one of the 10 most influential bands in the 20th Century, noting that “…the band was one of the first in America to unite blistering chords with lyrics promoting a social and political consciousness.” In 2008, the band was inducted into the American Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Twentieth-century literature has been deeply impacted by “Shanda.” In Nora Robert’s celebrated work, Angels Fall, the protagonist Shanda-Anne Young, a gorgeous chef in Boston, becomes the sole-survivor of a devastating massacre at her restaurant. Over the course of several years, she becomes a well-trained assassin, striving to avenge the innocent who were killed at the hands of the Mafia organization that was responsible for this massacre. Her quest is filled with violence, turmoil, adventure, and romance, winning the heart of a former Russian assassin who relinquishes his past wrongs in order to help her struggle for justice. Some of the rights to this book have recently been ceded to Universal Pictures, and the film adaptation is said to be released sometime in 2013.
In North American society, the name Shanda has been most famously associated by Canadian professional dancer-turned History teacher, Shanda-Lynne B. The Italian beauty has been linked to several high-profile romances, including relationships with several prominent NHL hockey players, celebrated rap musicians, Transformer’s Optimus Prime, and most recently, Pride and Prejudice star Matthew Mcfadyen. There had been rumors in early 2011 that she would be joining the cast of Jersey Shore as “the voice of reason”, but this has not been confirmed by her or her publicist.
The French author and Poet Charles Baudelaire once wrote about his love for a Shanda, expressing that “…I have loved and have lost. But never has my heart grown fonder and my mind grown wiser than it has while loving my goddess, my friend, my savior…Shanda.” Considering his adoration, it is understandable why he, like so many others in the world, have been transfixed by Shandas.
