Shea Homes is an American homebuilding company. Founded in 1881, its major markets are the West Coast (California, Arizona, Nevada, Washington, and Colorado), Texas, the Carolinas, and Florida.

History

Shea Homes’ parent company, the J. F. Shea Co., was founded in 1881 in Portland, Oregon by John Francis Shea. In 1998, it acquired UDC Homes, which had been the largest homebuilder in the Phoenix market and had a presence in California. [1] In addition to being a new home builder, the J. F. Shea Company's activities include commercial construction, civil engineering, commercial and multi-family property development and management, construction materials and venture capital.[ citation needed ]

Donations

In 2017, Shea Homes donated $11 million to Phoenix-area Catholic schools to be used for renovations and construction. [2]

Awards

Shea Homes was named America's Best Builder in 2005 by Builder Magazine , [3] 2007 Builder of the Year by Professional Builder [4] and 2011 JD Power and Associates Customer Service Champion. [5]

It has been the first sponsor of Curious George on PBS Kids.

The same year, the corporation unveiled Sun City, outside Phoenix, as the first community designed for senior citizens. Many more Sun Cities were built by the corporation in the following decades. The company, founded as the Universal Development Company in Chicago in 1968, became an active homebuilder in the Southwest and Southeast. The firm changed its name to UDC Homes in 1986; the next year, it completed a move of its corporate headquarters to Tempe, Arizona, a suburb of Phoenix. UDC was a highly productive builder, the ninth-largest in the U.S. by 1992; it was the second-largest in Phoenix, a market that represented most of its revenues, and the third-largest in Charlotte, North Carolina. Its homes largely targeted the "move-up" market.
