Shelina Permalloo is a TV chef, restaurateur and cookery author who specialises in Mauritian food. She was the first woman of colour to win BBC's MasterChef in 2012.

Early life

Permalloo was born and brought up in Southampton and identifies as being a British Mauritian with both parents migrating from Mauritius. [1]

Career

After time as a project manager in the field of equality, diversity and inclusion, Permalloo took part in MasterChef programme and she became BBC’s MasterChef Champion in 2012. She published her first cook book Sunshine on a Plate based on her Mauritian heritage. She opened her first restaurant Lakez Maman in Southampton in 2016. [2] Her restaurant is inspired by modern Mauritian street food [1] and is run by an all-female management team. [3]

Permalloo is a panellist on BBC Radio 4 The Kitchen Cabinet with food critic Jay Rayner. [3] She has returned as a judge on BBC’s MasterChef and as a guest chef on TV [3] in show's such as Saturday Kitchen, Kirstie Allsopp Handmade Christmas and John and Lisa's Weekend Kitchen.

Her first book Sunshine on a Plate reflects her Mauritian Heritage and won the Gourmand book awards for 'best African cookbook', her second book The Sunshine Diet was published in 2015. [1]

She has partnered her restaurant with SOS Children’s Village, an orphanage based in Mauritius. For every full-time staff member, Lakaz Maman sponsors a child in Mauritius.

In 2022 she gave a TEDx talk at the University of Southampton on the power of food. [4]

She was appointed Chair of Southampton 2025 City of Culture Trust. During the pandemic, her team cooked over 1,500 meals for keyworkers and the homeless [5] and 300 free school meals. She is an ambassador for Southampton’s Holiday Activities and Food Programme.

Mauritian diaspora in the United Kingdom are British people with Mauritian descent, or who were born in Mauritius. The 2001 UK Census recorded 27,078 Mauritian-born people living in the UK. The 2011 UK Census recorded 40,890 Mauritian-born residents in England, 434 in Wales, 571 in Scotland, and 83 in Northern Ireland. The Office for National Statistics estimates that in 2014, 41,000 people born in Mauritius were resident in the UK.

MasterChef: The Professionals is a BBC television competitive cooking show which aired on BBC Two from 2008 to 2019, and on BBC One since 2020. It is a spin-off from the main MasterChef series, for professional working chefs. Introduced in 2008, Gregg Wallace and India Fisher reprised their roles as co-judge and voiceover respectively. Michel Roux Jr., a two-Michelin-star chef, assisted, from 2009, by his sous-chef Monica Galetti. Since 2011, Sean Pertwee has taken over Fisher's role as voiceover.

As well as appearing as a judge on MasterChef: The Professionals from 2009 to 2021, she has presented Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond the Lobby with Giles Coren and Rob Rinder since 2017.

Romy Gill MBE is a British/Indian chef, food writer, author and broadcaster. She was the owner and head chef at Romy's Kitchen in Thornbury, South Gloucestershire. In 2016 she was appointed an MBE in the Queen's 90th birthday honours list. Romy has amassed a number of television and radio appearances, including presenting, co-presenting and judging roles. She regularly contributes to national and international publications, including The New York Times, The Sunday Times and The Daily Telegraph.

Olia Hercules is a London-based Ukrainian chef, food writer and food stylist. In response to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine she initiated a programme of fundraising, for individuals and for UNICEF.
