Shelley Segal (born 4 April 1987) is an Australian singer and songwriter who is currently based in the United States. [1] She is most known for music with secular themes, including her 2011 album, An Atheist Album and has played at many atheist/secular events including the Reason Rally, the American Humanist Association conference, California Free Thought Day, the Global Atheist Convention, ReAsonCon, [2] Gateway to Reason, [3] and Reasonfest. [4] Her first single, "Saved", is currently used as the opening theme by the webcast and cable access television show The Atheist Experience . [5]

Biography

Early life

Segal was born in Melbourne, Australia. She was raised in a traditional Jewish household. Her father, Danny Segal, is the president of the East Melbourne Synagogue (as of August 2017) and plays violin in a klezmer wedding band. At the age of 11, Shelley Segal began singing in her father's band and writing her own songs. She came to call herself an atheist around the age of 18. With a different perspective, Segal began to see religion more negatively than when a theist, taking issue with things such as gender segregation in Orthodox Jewish synagogues. [6] Segal also identifies as a humanist. [7]

Segal released her first recording, Shelley Segal EP, in 2009. It is composed of songs Segal wrote at ages 15–21. [8]

In 2011, Segal released her album An Atheist Album. She says she created it "firstly as an expression of my honest response to [the debate between religious and secular world-views]." [9] It contains the following songs: [10]

Segal co-wrote and provided vocals for the Carl Cox dance song Chemistry. [11]

In 2013, Segal toured with guitarist Adam Levy and released the album Little March in collaboration with him. The songs of the album deal with love and relationships. [12] [13] [14]

Segal released her album An Easy Escape in 2014. The reggae-inspired song Morocco from this album became controversial in Morocco. A song based on her experiences travelling in Morocco, many in Morocco criticized references to drug use in Morocco. The Moroccan news site Afriquinfos claimed she "denounced the kingdom [of Morocco]." [15] About the song, Segal said to Fairfax Media: "It's just to contrast that situation as a tourist and having fun and getting to escape my troubles, contrasted with some troubles local people are facing and questioning what is my place here ... and what troubles do I actually have." [16]

In 2015, Segal released her EP Strange Feeling. The body-positive song Sidelined from this album was a finalist in the 2016 Unsigned Only competition. [17] [18]

In 2016, Segal signed with Los Angeles publishing house 411 Music Group and moved to Los Angeles. [19]

Pauline Curuenavuli, known professionally as Paulini, is a Fijian-Australian singer, songwriter and musical theatre actress. Born in Suva, Paulini moved to Sydney with her family at the age of four. She rose to fame in 2003 as a contestant on the first season of Australian Idol and placed fourth in the competition. After Idol, Paulini signed a recording contract with Sony BMG Australia and released her debut studio album One Determined Heart (2004), which debuted at number one on the ARIA Albums Chart and was certified platinum. The album included the platinum single "Angel Eyes", which spent three consecutive weeks at number one on the ARIA Singles Chart. Paulini received two ARIA No. 1 Chart Awards for both the album and single.

Coulter rose to fame in 2004 on the second season of Australian Idol and placed seventh in the competition. She subsequently signed with Australian independent label Shock Records, and released her self-titled debut album Ricki-Lee (2005), which produced the top-ten hits "Hell No!" and "Sunshine". Both singles were certified gold by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA). The following year, Coulter became a member of the Australian pop girl group Young Divas, before leaving in early 2007 to resume her solo career.

Come Alive is the third studio album by Australian recording artist Paulini, released through Fortitude Group under exclusive licence to Ambition and Decca Records Australia on 29 May 2015. It is the follow-up to her 2006 album, Superwoman. Paulini described the album as a labour of love and her most personal album to date. She said "[it] represents my personal struggle over the past few years to find my voice, not only in music but in life". Come Alive is an adult contemporary pop album and marks a departure from the R&B sounds of Paulini's previous albums. It debuted at number 25 on the ARIA Albums Chart.

Nikkita Kalea "Kita" Alexander is an Australian pop singer-songwriter from Brisbane, Queensland. Her single "Hotel" peaked at number 51 on the ARIA Singles Chart in November 2017 and was certified 2× Platinum by Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) in 2020. Alexander released her debut studio album, Young in Love in March 2024.

<i>Seven Sonnets & a Song</i> 2016 studio album by Paul Kelly

Seven Sonnets & a Song is the twenty-first studio album by Australian musician, Paul Kelly, which was issued on 22 April 2016 on his own label, Gawdaggie Records, and distributed by Universal Music Australia. Kelly composed music for seven sonnets by William Shakespeare and a poem, "My True Love Hath My Heart", by Philip Sidney. The album debuted at No. 9 on the ARIA Albums Chart, becoming Kelly's fourth top 10. It was nominated for Best Adult Contemporary Album at the ARIA Music Awards of 2016.
