Shepherd Malusi Mayatula (born 10 October 1945),sometimes misspelled Shepherd Mayathula,is a retired South African politician and economist from the Eastern Cape. He represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2009 and later from 2011 to 2014. During that time,he chaired the Portfolio Committee on Education from 2004 to 2009.
Formerly an economics professor at the University of Fort Hare,Mayatula entered legislative politics with a term in the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature from 1994 to 1999. He served as the Eastern Cape's inaugural Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Finance from 1994 to 1998 and then as MEC for Education from 1998 to 1999.
Mayatula was born on 10 October 1945 [1] in rural Willowvale in the former Cape Province. [2] He was educated at the University of Fort Hare and,on a Fulbright scholarship,at Boston's Northeastern University;he holds two master's degree in economics. [2]
From 1975 to 1994,he was a member of the economics faculty at Fort Hare,where he served stints as head of the economics department and vice-dean of the commerce faculty. During the same period,he was active in politically progressive sports associations in the region,including the Tennis Association of South Africa and the South African Council on Sport. [2]
In South Africa's first post-apartheid elections in 1994,Mayatula was elected to represent the ANC in the new Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature. After the election,Eastern Cape Premier Raymond Mhlaba appointed him as the province's inaugural MEC for Finance. [3] He remained in that portfolio until March 1998,when Mhlaba's successor,Premier Makhenkesi Stofile,appointed him to replace Nosimo Balindlela as MEC for Education. Eddie Trent of the opposition Democratic Party said that he was "very concerned" by the appointment because Mayatula's performance in the finance portfolio had been "abysmal". [4]
In the 1999 general election,Mayatula was elected to the National Assembly,the lower house of the South African Parliament. He was ranked first on the ANC's regional party list for the Eastern Cape. [5] He served two consecutive terms,gaining re-election in 2004, [6] and in May 2004 the ANC nominated him to chair Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Education. [7] He remained in that position until the 2009 general election,when he declined to seek re-election and retired from frontline politics to work in the non-profit sector. [5] [2]
However,less than three years later,on 7 February 2012,he returned to the National Assembly when the ANC nominated him to fill the casual vacancy arising from Enoch Godongwana's resignation. [8] He served in the seat until the 2014 general election. [9]
After retiring from politics,Mayatula remained active in the non-profit sector and in the governance of Fort Hare. [2] As of 2021,he was also the chairperson of the Integrity Commission of the ANC's Eastern Cape Provincial Executive Committee. [8]
Qubudile Richard Dyantyi has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly since 2019. Before that,he was a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament and served as the Western Cape's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Local Government and Housing from 2005 to 2008. In 2021,he was elected chairperson of the national parliament's Committee for the Section 194 Enquiry into Busisiwe Mkhwebane's fitness to hold office.
Noxolo Kiviet is a South African politician who has served as the Minister of Public Service and Administration since March 2023. She was formerly the Deputy Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure from 2019 to 2023 and also served as the Premier of the Eastern Cape from 2009 to 2014.
Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane is a South African politician who has been serving as the seventh Premier of the Eastern Cape since May 2019. He was previously Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Economic Development,Environmental Affairs and Tourism in the Eastern Cape provincial government from May 2018 to May 2019.
Pemmy Castelina Pamela Majodina is a South African politician serving as a Member of the National Assembly since 2019. A member of the African National Congress,she is the party's chief whip in the assembly. The constituency was established in 1994 when the National Assembly was established by the Interim Constitution following the end of Apartheid. It is conterminous with the province of Eastern Cape. The constituency currently elects 25 of the 400 members of the National Assembly using the closed party-list proportional representation electoral system. At the 2019 general election it had 3,363,161 registered electors.

He is currently serving as Co-Chairperson of the Joint Standing Committee on Defence and as Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans. A member of the African National Congress,he previously served in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature from 1994 to 2009 and from 2014 to 2019. He was the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development from 2014 to 2016.

Xolile Edmund Nqatha is a South African politician who has been the Eastern Cape MEC for Transport and Community Safety since 2022. A member of the African National Congress,he has been a member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature since 2009. Nqatha served as the MEC for Rural Development and Agrarian Reform from 2018 to 2019 and as the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs from 2019 to 2022. He is also the provincial secretary of the South African Communist Party.
Nonkqubela Ntomboxolo Pieters is a South African politician and educator who has been the Eastern Cape's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Rural Development and Agrarian Reform since 2021 and a member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature since 2019,representing the African National Congress (ANC). She previously served as the MEC for Human Settlements from 2019 to 2021. Pieters served as the speaker of the Cacadu District Municipality from 2006 to 2018.
Jacobus Frederick van Wyk,also sometimes referred to as Boeboe van Wyk,was a South African politician who was a member of the National Assembly from 1997 to 2004,member of the Executive Council in the Northern Cape government from 2004 to 2009,member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature from 2004 to 2013,speaker of the provincial legislature from 2009 to 2013,and mayor of the Nama Khoi Local Municipality from 2013 to 2016. Van Wyk was a member of the African National Congress.

Sakhumzi Stoffels Somyo is a South African politician. A member of the African National Congress,he was elected to the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature in 2014. He was then appointed as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) responsible for the Finance,Economic Development,Environment and Tourism portfolio. In 2018,he was fired as an MEC. Somyo was elected to Parliament in 2019. Soon after,he was elected Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Auditor General.

She has been a member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature since May 2019. Before joining the provincial legislature,Fanta had briefly been a Member of Parliament for less than three months,serving from February until May 2019. Fanta is the current provincial co-ordinator and former provincial chairperson of the African National Congress Women's League.
Gothatamang Norman Jonathan Shushu,known as Norman Shushu,is a South African politician who served in the Northern Cape Executive Council from 2009 to 2019. During that period,he was Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Agriculture,Land Reform and Rural Development. He lost his seat in the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature in the 2019 general election. A teacher by training,he is a member of the African National Congress and a provincial leader of the South African Communist Party in the Northern Cape.
Bulelwa Tunyiswa is a South African politician who served as the Eastern Cape's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Sports,Recreation,Arts and Culture from May 2018 to May 2019. Before that,she was the Deputy Speaker of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature from 2010 to 2018. She lost her position on the Executive Council after the 2019 general election,when she failed to gain re-election to the provincial legislature. A member of the African National Congress (ANC),Tunyiswa has also been a member of the Central Committee of the South African Communist Party (SACP) since 2012.
Mkhangeli Manford Matomela is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature until August 2013,when he left the legislature and the party to found the breakaway Kingdom Governance Movement. He was formerly the Speaker of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature from 2004 to 2009 and the Eastern Cape's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education from 2004 to 2007. Matomela contested the 2014 general election as a candidate for the Kingdom Governance Movement,but the party did not win any seats.
Mandla Makupula was a South African politician who served as the Eastern Cape's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) from November 2010 until his death in October 2018. He had represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature since 1999.
