The men's 5000 metre relay competition in short track speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 11 February (semifinals) and 16 February (finals), at the Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing. [1] The Canadian team won gold, with South Korea winning silver and Italy the bronze. [2] [3] [4] [5]

The defending champion were Hungary, with China and Canada being second and third in 2018. The Netherlands were the 2021 World Short Track Speed Skating champion, Hungary and Italy were the silver and bronze medalists, respectively. Many top athletes did not participate in the championship, however. Canada were leading the 2021–22 ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup with four races completed before the Olympics, followed by South Korea and Hungary.

Qualification

The top with the top 8 countries qualified a relay through the 2021–22 ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup, including host nation China. [6]

Controversy

During the semifinals of the event, the Chinese team fell with 10 laps to go. There was no obvious obstruction on the Chinese skater, but they were advanced to the A final, with no team disqualified during the race. The Chinese team were advanced, even though they finished last in the race and there was no impeding action on the team. [9]

Competing in all distances, he won thirty-eight medals at the World Championships, including fourteen gold medals, and also led Canada to five world relay titles. Hamelin was also the 2014 Overall World Cup season winner and the 2018 Overall World Champion, giving him all the achievements available in the sport.

François Hamelin is a Canadian former short track speed skater from Sainte-Julie, Quebec, residing in Montreal. He is the younger brother of acclaimed Canadian short tracker Charles Hamelin. His father Yves Hamelin is also the director of the Canadian short track program.

Valérie Maltais is a Canadian short track speed skater and speed skater. She has won six world championship medals, including finishing second overall in 2012.

Charle Cournoyer is a Canadian short track speed skater. He won an Olympic bronze medal in the 500 m at the 2014 Winter Olympics. Cournoyer was also part of the gold medal World Championship relay team at the 2013 ISU World Championships for Canada.

Ivanie Blondin is a Canadian speed skater. She primarily skates in the long distances of 3000 m and 5000 m and the mass start event. She was the first Canadian female short track speed skater to win three individual Olympic medals in a single Olympics and the first Canadian woman to win an Olympic medal in the 1,500 m. As a result of her three medal performance she was named the flag bearer for Canada at the closing ceremonies for the 2018 Winter Olympics. Boutin has also won junior and senior world championships and World Cup medals.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Shaoang Liu</span> Hungarian short track speed skater

Shaoang Liu is a Hungarian-born Olympic gold medalist short track speed skater. He is the younger brother of teammate Shaolin Sándor Liu, and has won two golds and two bronzes represent Hungary at the Winter Olympics in 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympics in short track speed skating. The gold medals were the first ever team gold, and the first ever individual gold at the Winter Olympics for Hungary. He changed his nationality and may represent China after 2023.

Lin Xiaojun, born Lim Hyo-jun, is a South Korean-born Chinese short track speed skater. He is the 2018 champion of the Men's 1500 m event in short track speed skating at the Winter Olympics, and also set the new Olympic record for the event. Originally starting as a swimmer, Lim took up skating at a young age. Despite multiple injuries early on in his career, he notably won gold at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympics upon his international debut in the Boys' 1000 m event. He would later win the 1000 m and 1500 m events in the Budapest leg of the 2017–18 ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup and earn selection for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. Upon his Olympic debut, Lim won the gold medal, setting a new Olympic record of 2:10.485 in the process, beating Lee Jung-su's previous record set at the 2010 games.

Short track speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics are scheduled to be held at the Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing, China. The events are scheduled to take place between 5 and 16 February 2022. A total of nine short track speed skating events will be held.

The women's team pursuit competition in speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 12 February (semifinals) and 15 February (final), at the National Speed Skating Oval in Beijing. Ivanie Blondin, Valérie Maltais, and Isabelle Weidemann, representing Canada, won the event, setting an Olympic record in Final A. This was the first gold medal for Canada in this event and the first Canadian medal since 2006. Ayano Sato, Miho Takagi, and Nana Takagi of Japan set an Olympic record in the semifinals and eventually won the silver medal. Japan was leading during the final against Canada when Nana Takagi fell down with less than half a lap to go. Antoinette de Jong, Marijke Groenewoud, Irene Schouten, and Ireen Wüst, representing the Netherlands, won the bronze medal.

The men's 1000 metres competition in short track speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 5 February (heats) and 7 February (finals), at the Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing. Ren Ziwei of China won the event, achieving his first individual Olympic gold medal. His teammate, Li Wenlong took the silver – his first Olympic medal, and Shaoang Liu of Hungary won the bronze.

The men's 1500 metres competition in short track speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 9 February, at the Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing. Hwang Dae-heon of South Korea became the Olympic champion, this was his first Olympic gold. Steven Dubois of Canada won silver, his first Olympic medal, and Semion Elistratov, representing the Russian Olympic Committee, bronze. Due to unusually high number of penalties and advancements in semi-finals, 10 athletes were competing in Final A.

The mixed 2000 metre relay competition in short track speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 5 February, at the Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing. This will be the first time a mixed short track speed skating event is featured at the Olympics.
