Vice Admiral Sir Simon Robert Lister, KCB , OBE (born October 1959) is a retired Royal Navy officer who is managing director of BAE Systems's naval ships business.

Lister joined the Royal Navy in 1978. After training at the Royal Naval Engineering College at Manadon and the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, he became the marine engineer officer of the submarine Odin in 1986. He went on to be marine engineer officer of Torbay and then Trenchant in 1993. He became Naval Assistant to the Chief Executive of the Ship Support Agency in 1994 and, after attending the London Business School in 1996, he became Director, Naval Plans at the Ministry of Defence in 1997 and then naval attaché in Moscow in 2001. [1]

Lister became head of the team responsible for phase one of the internal restructuring programme at the Defence Logistics Organisation in 2004. [2] He went on to be Commander, HM Naval Base Devonport in 2005, Senior Naval Member on the Directing Staff at the Royal College of Defence Studies in April 2008 [3] and Director, Submarines in 2009. [4] Lister became Chief of Materiel (Fleet) and Chief of Fleet Support with promotion to the rank of vice admiral in December 2013. [3] In May 2017, he was appointed as interim head of the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) and given the title of Chief of Materiel (Submarines). [5]

Lister was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2001 Birthday Honours, [6] Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in the 2013 New Year Honours, [7] and Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) in the 2017 Birthday Honours. [8]

In August 2017 Lister took a sabbatical from his Royal Navy Career to lead the Aircraft Carrier Alliance. [9] He retired from active service of the navy on 25 October 2019. [10]

Later career

Following his retirement from the Royal Navy, Lister went on to become managing director of BAE Systems's naval ships business. [11] In November 2021, he additionally reappointed as a non-executive director on the board of the Office for Nuclear Regulation; he will continue in that role until March 2026. [12] Since April 2022, he has been a member of the Scottish Government's National Strategy for Economic Transformation Delivery Board. [13] [14]

Admiral Sir John David Luce, was a Royal Navy officer. He fought in the Second World War as a submarine commander before taking part in the Dieppe Raid and becoming Chief Staff Officer to the Naval Forces for the Normandy landings. He also commanded a cruiser during the Korean War. He served as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff in the mid-1960s and in that role resigned from the Royal Navy along with Navy Minister Christopher Mayhew in March 1966 in protest over the decision by the Labour Secretary of State for Defence, Denis Healey, to cancel the CVA-01 aircraft carrier programme.

Rear Admiral Peter Gerald Hammersley CB OBE was an English Royal Navy officer who served from 1946 to 1982. Hammersley won a scholarship to Britannia Royal Naval College to train as a deck officer but his eyesight was too poor. Instead, he chose to become an engineer and studied at the Royal Naval Engineering College from 1946 to 1950. He trained onboard HMS Frobisher and HMS Duke of York and served on HMS Ocean during the Korean War. Hammersley specialised in submarines from 1954 and in 1959 served on secondment to the US Navy on the nuclear submarine Nautilus. In 1960 he became the first marine engineering officer to serve aboard the Royal Navy's first nuclear-powered submarine, HMS Dreadnought. Hammersley helped design the Swiftsure-class of submarines and commanded a number of shore installations including the Royal Naval Engineering College. He served as aide-de-camp to Queen Elizabeth II and was Chief Staff Officer Engineering for the fleet in the 1982 Falklands War. After retirement in 1982 he served in roles in a number of commercial and charitable organisations.
