Simon Matsobane Mathe is a South African politician and trade unionist who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Limpopo Provincial Legislature since 2019. He was formerly the General Secretary of the South African Municipal Workers' Union (SAMWU) from December 2015 until April 2019, when he and the union's other leaders were removed in a vote of no confidence.

Career in SAMWU

Mathe entered politics through SAMWU, an affiliate of the ANC-allied Congress of South African Trade Unions. [1] [2] He was formerly SAMWU's Provincial Secretary in Limpopo [1] [2] and by 2015 was the Deputy General Secretary of the national union. [3] In late 2015, the incumbent General Secretary, Walter Theledi, was suspended from his office amid allegations of financial mismanagement; SAMWU's executive committee voted in December 2015 to replace him with Mathe. [4]

Mathe subsequently served as national SAMWU General Secretary from 2015 to 2019. [5] [6] [7] In 2018, his leadership corps controversially amended the union's constitution to extend their own terms in office from three years to five years, although Mathe said that the amendment was the result of a resolution of SAMWU's national congress. [8] More generally, Mathe presided over what the Mail & Guardian called a "leadership crisis" in the union, and in early 2019 the labour registrar applied to have SAMWU placed under administration for alleged violations of the Labour Relations Act. [9] [10] In April 2019, at a SAMWU executive committee meeting in Bloemfontein, five of the union's nine provincial branches supported a motion of no confidence in the incumbent national leadership. Mathe said that he had resigned before the motion was voted on, but sources said that his resignation was prompted by the motion. [10] He was replaced as General Secretary by Koena Ramatlou. [9]

Career in the provincial legislature

In the 2019 general election, which took place shortly after Mathe's removal from his SAMWU office, Mathe was elected to an ANC seat in the Limpopo Provincial Legislature, ranked 31st on the ANC's provincial party list. [11] He has also been elected to two consecutive four-year terms on the Limpopo ANC's Provincial Executive Committee in June 2018 [12] and June 2022. [13]

In 2015, she resigned as speaker. Ramadwa was elected to the National Assembly of South Africa in 2019.

He has been a Member of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature since 2004 and was previously MEC for Health and Social Development from 2004 to 2009 and, before his appointment to his current position, MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism from 2013 to 2019. From 2013 to 2017, he was also Regional Chairperson of the Mopani branch of his political party, the African National Congress.

Motlagomang Grazy Qabathe, commonly known as Mamiki Qabathe, is a South African politician who is currently serving in the Executive Council of the Free State as Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Social Development. Before that, she was Speaker of the Free State Provincial Legislature from 2015 to 2019. She is a member of the African National Congress (ANC).

Thamsanqa China Dodovu is a South African politician who is currently serving as a Delegate to the National Council of Provinces since May 2019. He was formerly the Mayor of Klerksdorp's Matlosana Local Municipality and served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Local Government and Traditional Affairs in the North West provincial government from May 2012 until June 2013. Dodovu is a member of the African National Congress and served as the party's Deputy Provincial Chairperson in the North West from 2011 to 2015.

Bonnie David "Che" Selane is a South African politician who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Limpopo Provincial Legislature since 2019. He was formerly the Provincial Deputy Chairperson of the Limpopo branch of the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) from 2015 to 2021.

Wisani Goodman Mitileni, sometimes also spelled Mtileni, is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Limpopo Provincial Legislature from 2014 to 2021. He resigned from the legislature after being elected Regional Secretary of the ANC's Mopani branch in June 2021. Less than a year later, in March 2022, he was elected as Provincial Chairperson of the Limpopo branch of the South African Communist Party (SACP).

Bheki Ntuli is a South African politician who is active in the African National Congress (ANC) of KwaZulu-Natal. He is known for his tenure as Regional Secretary of the ANC's eThekwini branch, an office he held from 2015 to 2019. He subsequently led the branch as its interim coordinator from 2020 until 2022, when he was voted out of the leadership by allies of Zandile Gumede. In July 2022, he was elected to a four-year term on the Provincial Executive Committee of the ANC's KwaZulu-Natal branch.
