Rodgers Basikopo Makamu is a South African politician who is currently serving as Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs in the Limpopo provincial government. He was formerly MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development between 2018 and 2019. A teacher by training and a member of the African National Congress (ANC), Makamu was elected to a second term as Deputy Provincial Secretary of the ANC's Limpopo branch in June 2022.

Early life and career

Makamu was born in Giyani in Mopani in present-day Limpopo and matriculated at Matsambu High School in Mopani in 1994, the year that apartheid ended. [1] He trained as an accounting teacher but later resigned from the education sector to work in local government, becoming an accountant and then a manager at the Greater Giyani Local Municipality. [1] He was also a member of the African National Congress (ANC), initially through the party's Youth League. [2] He resigned from his municipal job when he was elected to the full-time party position of Regional Secretary of the ANC's branch in Mopani. [1] He was Regional Secretary under Regional Chairperson Seaparo Sekwati [3] and then, after his re-election in September 2017, under Sekwati's successor, Pule Shayi. [4]

Career in provincial government

In June 2018, Makamu vacated [5] the regional party office when he was elected to a more senior position as Deputy Provincial Secretary of the ANC's Limpopo branch. [6] He won in a vote against Onicca Moloi. [2] As deputy secretary, he worked under ANC Provincial Chairperson Stan Mathabatha and ANC Provincial Secretary Soviet Lekganyane. [6] Shortly after his election to the party office, on 26 July 2018, [1] he joined the Limpopo Executive Council: Mathabatha, in his capacity as Premier of Limpopo, appointed Makamu to succeed the late Joyce Mashamba as Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Agriculture and Rural Development. [2]

In the 2019 general election, Makamu was elected to his first full term as a Member of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature, ranked second on the ANC's party list. [7] He was appointed MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs in Mathabatha's newly constituted Executive Council. [8] [9] He was also re-elected to his position as ANC Deputy Provincial Secretary at the party's next provincial elective conference in Polokwane in June 2022; he ran on a slate aligned to Mathabatha, who won re-election as ANC Provincial Chairperson at the same conference, and thereafter he deputised Reuben Madadzhe, who succeeded Soviet Lekganyane as Provincial Secretary. Following the 2024 general election, Makamu remained as the MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs in the executive council led by the newly elected premier Phophi Ramathuba. [11]

From June 2022 until June 2024, she served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure in the Limpopo provincial government. She previously served as the MEC for Social Development from May 2019 to June 2022. Rakgoale was elected to the Limpopo Provincial Legislature in May 2019. Before that, she served as the Executive Mayor of the Mopani District Municipality. Rakgoale is a member of the African National Congress.

Fulufhelo Florence Radzilani is a South African politician who is currently serving as Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Social Deevelopment in Limpopo province. She was formerly the executive mayor of Vhembe District Municipality from 2011 to 2012 and from 2016 to 2018. She resigned as mayor in December 2018 after being implicated in the corruption scandal at VBS Mutual Bank.

Gannye Rodgers Monama is a South African politician and a member of the African National Congress. Monama was elected to the Limpopo Provincial Legislature in the 2019 general election. In October 2022, he was appointed the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism in the Limpopo provincial government. Monama was re-elected to the Provincial Legislature but was not reappointed to the executive council in 2024.

Namane Dickson Masemola is a South African politician who has been a Delegate to the National Council of Provinces since October 2022. Between 2009 and 2022, he was a Member of the Provincial Legislature in the Limpopo provincial government, representing the African National Congress (ANC), and held a variety of positions in the Limpopo Executive Council.

The Executive Council of Limpopo is the cabinet of the executive branch of the provincial government in the South African province of Limpopo. The Members of the Executive Council (MECs) are appointed from among the members of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature by the Premier of Limpopo, an office held since June 2023 by Phophi Ramathuba.

Molapi Soviet Lekganyane is a South African politician from Limpopo province. A member of the African National Congress (ANC), he was Member of the Limpopo Executive Council for Local Government and Housing from 2009 to 2012 under Premier Cassel Mathale. He served two terms as Provincial Secretary of the ANC in Limpopo, from 2011 to 2013 under Mathale and from 2018 to 2022 under Stan Mathabatha. He was formerly the Provincial Secretary of the South African Communist Party in Limpopo from 2008 to 2011 and in 2022 he was elected to a five-year term on the ANC's National Executive Committee.

Azwindini Jeremiah "Jerry" Ndou is a South African politician and diplomat who has served as a Delegate to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) since October 2022. Before that, he represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Limpopo Provincial Legislature and Limpopo Executive Council.

Seaparo Charles Sekoati, sometimes misspelled Seaparo Sekwati, is a South African politician who has been a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since 2024. He was a Member of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature from 2004 until 2024 and served in the Limpopo provincial government as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Health and Social Development from 2004 to 2009 and, before serving as the MEC for Finance from 2019 until 2024, MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism from 2013 to 2019. From 2013 to 2017, he was also Regional Chairperson of the Mopani branch of his political party, the African National Congress.

Makoma Grace Makhurupetje is a South African politician who has been the Speaker of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature since 2024. She has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the provincial legislature since 2014. She formerly served as Limpopo's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Transport and Community Safety from 2017 to 2019 and as MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs from 2014 to 2017. From 2014 to 2018, she was the Deputy Provincial Secretary of the ANC's Limpopo branch.

Mmaneo Onicca Moloi is a South African politician and businesswoman who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Limpopo Provincial Legislature from 2014 to 2019. She was also Limpopo's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Sports, Arts and Culture from September 2016 until July 2018, when she made a forthright Facebook post and resigned. A trained chef, she rose to political prominence through the Limpopo branch of the ANC Youth League.

Matjie Lehlogonolo Alfred Masoga is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Limpopo Provincial Legislature from 2009 to 2019. He was Limpopo's Member of the Executive Council for Roads and Transport from July 2013 to May 2014 and he subsequently served as Deputy Speaker of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature from 2014 to 2019. He rose to prominence as the Provincial Chairperson of the Limpopo branch of the ANC Youth League, although he was expelled from the league in July 2010 after falling out with league president Julius Malema.

Leswafo Joshua Matlou is a South African politician who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Limpopo Provincial Legislature since 2019. He was formerly the Mayor of Mopani District Municipality from 2009 until 2014, when the ANC asked him to resign. He also served as the chairperson of the ANC's influential Mopani branch from 2009 to 2013 and before that was the Provincial Chairperson of the ANC Youth League in Limpopo.

Susani Violet Mathye is a South African politician who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Limpopo Provincial Legislature since 2014. She was first elected to the provincial legislature in the 2014 general election, ranked 26th on the ANC's provincial party list. She was ranked 14th upon her re-election in the 2019 general election.

Wisani Goodman Mitileni, sometimes also spelled Mtileni, is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Limpopo Provincial Legislature from 2014 to 2021. He resigned from the legislature after being elected Regional Secretary of the ANC's Mopani branch in June 2021. Less than a year later, in March 2022, he was elected as Provincial Chairperson of the Limpopo branch of the South African Communist Party (SACP).

Pule Josiah Shayi is a South African politician who has served as the mayor of Mopani District Municipality since 2019. Before that, he was Mayor of Ba-Phalaborwa Local Municipality from 2016 to 2019. He is best known as the Regional Chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) in the Mopani region, an office he has held since 2017.
