The Family Court of Western Australia is a state court that deals with family law. It was established by the passing of the Family Court Act and commenced operation in 1976. It is a state family court under section 41 of the Commonwealth Family Law Act 1975,and deals with the same issues as the Commonwealth Family Court,including divorce,marital property settlements,and child custody,and also adoption and surrogacy. Although funded by the Commonwealth Government,it is the only state-based family court in Australia. The reason for the creation of the court as a state court was to bestow additional jurisdiction related to family law on the court,which were beyond the scope of federal power,such as de facto arrangements and adoptions.

Elizabeth Constable is a former Independent member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly,firstly representing the seat of Floreat after winning it at a 1991 by-election following the resignation of Andrew Mensaros. After the abolition of Floreat in a redistribution in 1994,Constable was elected to the electorate of Churchlands in 1996 then re-elected in 2001 and 2005. In September 2011 she became the longest-serving female State Parliamentarian in WA,breaking the record set by Florence Cardell-Oliver who served from February 1936 to April 1956. Constable retired at the 2013 election.

Lesbian,gay,bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in Western Australia have seen significant progress since the beginning of the 21st century,with male sex acts legal since 1990 and the state parliament passing comprehensive law reforms in 2002. The state decriminalised male homosexual acts in 1990 and was the first to grant full adoption rights to LGBT couples in 2002.

The 2025 Western Australian state election is scheduled to be held on 8 March 2025 to elect members to the Parliament of Western Australia,where all 59 seats in the Legislative Assembly and all 37 seats in the Legislative Council will be up for election.
