Simona Brambilla MC (born 27 March 1965) is an Italian Catholic nun who has served as Prefect of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life since 2025. She is a member of the Consolata Missionaries and is the first woman to head a department of the Roman Curia.
Brambilla led the women's branch of the Consolata Missionaries from 2011 to 2023 and became the first female secretary of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life in October 2023.
Brambilla was born in Monza,in Lombardy,on 27 March 1965. She obtained a diploma in nursing 1986 [1] and worked at the L. Mandic Hospital in Merate (Province of Lecco). [2] She entered the Institute of the Missionary Sisters of Consolata in 1988 and made her first religious profession in 1991. She received a licentiate in psychology from the Institute of Psychology of the Pontifical Gregorian University in 1998. [1]
Beginning in 1999,after making her final profession,she was responsible for youth ministry at the Macua Xirima Study Center in Maua,Mozambique. [1]
She taught from 2002 to 2006 at the Gregorian's Institute of Psychology and earned a doctorate in psychology there in 2008, [1] with a thesis on evangelization and inculturation in Mozambique. [3]
She served as general councilor from 2005 to 2011. [1]
She was elected to a six-year term as superior general of the women's branch of the Consolata Missionaries on 7 June 2011 [3] and elected to a second term in 2017, [1] which concluded in May 2023. [4]
Pope Francis chose her to participate in the 2023 Synod of Bishops on Synodality. [5]
On 8 July 2019,Pope Francis named her and six others as the first women members of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. [6] [7] On 7 October 2023,Pope Francis appointed her the first female secretary of that Dicastery. [8] [1] She is the second woman to hold this rank in a dicastery of the Roman Curia after Alessandra Smerilli at the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development,while two other women hold the same title at other departments (not dicasteries):Nathalie Becquart at the Synod of Bishops and Raffaella Petrini at the Governorate of Vatican City State. [9] On December 13,2024,Pope Francis named her and María Lía Zervino along with two cardinals as his appointees to the 16th Ordinary Council of the General Secretariat of the Synod. They were the first women appointed to that role. [10] [11]
On 6 January 2025,Pope Francis named her Prefect of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. [12] With this appointment she became the first woman to head a department of the Roman Curia. [13]
The Roman Curia comprises the administrative institutions of the Holy See and the central body through which the affairs of the Catholic Church are conducted. The Roman Curia is the institution which the Roman Pontiff ordinarily makes use of in the exercise of his supreme pastoral office and universal mission in the world: thus curialism refers traditionally to an emphasis on the supreme authority of the Holy See within the Catholic Church. It is at the service of the Pope and bishops, fulfilling their function with an evangelical spirit, working for the good and at the service of communion, unity and edification of the Universal Church and attending to the demands of the world in which the Church is called to fulfill its duty and mission.
The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF) is a department of the Roman Curia in charge of the religious discipline of the Catholic Church. The Dicastery is the oldest among the departments of the Roman Curia. Its seat is the Palace of the Holy Office in Rome. It was founded to defend the Catholic Church from heresy and is the body responsible for promulgating and defending Catholic doctrine.
The Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, formerly called Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, is the dicastery of the Roman Curia with competency over everything which concerns institutes of consecrated life and societies of apostolic life, regarding their government, discipline, studies, goods, rights, and privileges.
The International Theological Commission (ITC) is a body of the Roman Curia of the Catholic Church; it advises the magisterium of the church, particularly the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF), a dicastery of the Roman Curia. Its memberships consists of no more than 30 Catholic theologians appointed by the pope at the suggestion of the prefect of the DDF for renewable five year terms. Ángel Fernández Artime, S.D.B. is a Spanish prelate of the Catholic Church who has been Cardinal Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life since 6 January 2025, when he was appointed in conjunction to appointment of the first ever female Prefect in the Roman Curia, Simona Brambilla. He was Rector Major of the Salesians from 2014 to 2024, the first Spaniard to hold that office. He was previously provincial superior of the Salesian Province of Leon from 2000 to 2006 and of the Southern Argentina Province from 2009 to 2014.

The Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life is a dicastery of the Roman Curia. Pope Francis announced its creation on 15 August 2016, effective 1 September 2016. It took over the functions and responsibilities of the Pontifical Council for the Laity and the Pontifical Council for the Family. It has responsibility "for the promotion of the life and apostolate of the lay faithful, for the pastoral care of the family and its mission according to God's plan and for the protection and support of human life."

The Dicastery for the Service of Charity, also known as the Apostolic Alms Office, is an administrative unit of the Roman Curia. It began operations on 5 June 2022 as established by the apostolic constitution Praedicate evangelium promulgated on 19 March 2022. Before the reform of Praedicate evangelium it was named the Office of Papal Charities.
María Lía Zervino is an Argentinian consecrated virgin and a sociologist. Being a member of the Asociación de Vírgenes Consagradas Servidoras she served as President General of the World Union of Catholic Women's Organisations from 2018 to 2023, an Association of the Christian faithful which was erected by the Holy See in 2006.
Enrica Rosanna F. M. A. is an Italian nun of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, and a sociologist and author. She is the first woman and first nun in Catholic church history to hold a senior post in the Vatican, although others have followed in higher posts, including Simona Brambilla. She retired in 2011.
