Sindhu Venkatanarayanan (born 1969) [1] [2] [3] is a British stand-up comedian and actress who performs under the name of Sindhu Vee. [4] She starred as Mrs. Phelps in the 2022 Netflix adaptation of Matilda the Musical .

Biography

Sindhu was born in New Delhi, India, the daughter of a civil servant father and a teacher mother. [5]

She has lived in Delhi, Lucknow, and the Philippines. She studied at the University of Delhi, the University of Oxford, the University of Chicago, and McGill University, [5] [6] and worked in banking as a "high-flying bonds tradeswoman" in London. [7]

Vee lives in London with her Danish financier husband, [5] and their three children. [7] [8]

Career

She started performing stand-up comedy in 2012 and has performed on stage in the UK, India, and the United States. [9] She appeared at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe each year between 2013 and 2017. Vee was nominated for the BBC New Comedy Award in 2016, was second in the 2017 Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year and joint third in the 2017 NATYS: New Acts of the Year Show.[ citation needed ]

Film and television

Vee has made television appearances on programmes including Have I Got News For You , Mock the Week , and Would I Lie To You? [10] on BBC One, Richard Osman's House of Games and QI on BBC Two, and Alan Davies: As Yet Untitled for Dave. [11] As of 2018, she is the host of the BBC Radio 4 Comedy of the Week podcast, and she has also appeared on Quote... Unquote and The Unbelievable Truth. [12]

Roald Dahl's Matilda, also known simply as Matilda and Matilda the Musical, is a musical with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin and a book by Dennis Kelly. It is based on the 1988 novel Matilda by Roald Dahl. The musical's narrative centres on Matilda Wormwood, a precocious five-year-old girl with the gift of telekinesis, who loves reading, overcomes obstacles caused by her family and school, and helps her teacher to reclaim her life. Starstruck is a comedy television series created by Rose Matafeo, co-written with Alice Snedden, directed by Karen Maine, and starring Matafeo and Nikesh Patel with Minnie Driver in a special guest starring role. A second series was commissioned before the first series aired. Series one premiered 25 April 2021 and series two was released on 2 February 2022. In June 2022, the series was renewed for a third and final season, and it was released on 28 August 2023. The series received positive critical reception.

<i>Matilda the Musical</i> (film) 2022 film by Matthew Warchus

Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical, or simply Matilda the Musical, or Matilda, is a 2022 fantasy musical film directed by Matthew Warchus from a screenplay by Dennis Kelly, based on the stage musical of the same name by Tim Minchin and Kelly, which in turn was based on the 1988 novel Matilda by Roald Dahl. The second film adaptation of the novel, following Matilda (1996), it stars Alisha Weir as the title character, alongside Lashana Lynch, Stephen Graham, Andrea Riseborough, Sindhu Vee, and Emma Thompson. In the plot, Matilda Wormwood (Weir), neglected and mistreated by her parents, develops psychokinetic abilities to deal with the injustices of life, as well as Miss Trunchbull (Thompson), the ruthless and cruel headmistress of Crunchem Hall School.

Donna Preston is an English actress, comedian and writer, notable for appearances in Apocalypse Wow, Hey Tracey! and Michael McIntyre's Big Show. She appears as Despair in Neil Gaiman's The Sandman released on Netflix in 2022.

Alice Snedden is a New Zealand stand-up comedian, television writer and actress. First working as a writer on New Zealand comedy shows such as Funny Girls, Jono and Ben and 7 Days, Snedden created the series Alice Snedden's Bad News, a documentary-comedy series written by and starring herself. In 2021, she co-wrote the BBC comedy series Starstruck alongside Rose Matafeo, who co-wrote and starred in the production.
