Singapore International Photography Festival

The Singapore International Photography Festival (SIPF) is a non-profit biennial festival organised by Singapore-based independent art space, DECK. [1] [2] [3] Its first edition, held in October 2008, was the first event of its kind in Southeast Asia, with its programmes emphasising new photography in Southeast Asia and showcasing photographic works from Artists from the region alongside international peers at various venues across Singapore. Contents

The three main festival components are the Ooficial exhibitions, workshops and portfolio review session for selected Southeast Asian photographers. Alongside, SIPF fringe activities are carried out at various arts galleries, arts spaces and education institutions to promote photography across Singapore. In 2012, SIPF has expanded its education programme with "Magnum Mentorship Singapore" a partnership with Magnum Photos Agency, and "Conversation with Black Box" a series of visual literacy activities for school students. [4]

Festival Curators

In each festival edition, SIPF invites arts professionals from all around the world to take part in the festival as Curators and portfolio reviewers. The selection of the Open Call submissions for the festival exhibitions are decided by the curators, independently of the festival organisers.

Official exhibitions

There are two types of official exhibitions: The Open Call Showcase and the Special Showcase. The Open Call Showcase focusses on photographic works selected from international submissions. The invited curators of the festival will meet in Singapore to make the selection, and to discuss on the curation of the works across various public venues in Singapore. Special Showcase are by invitation and often related to the core public programme in the festival. The duration of the exhibition ranges from 3 weeks to 3 months depending on the venues partners in each edition of the festival.

SIPF Open Call Showcase

In its 3rd SIPF Open Call, the exhibitions presented works by 50 emerging and established photographers from 25 countries such as Cambodia, Spain, Mexico, Peru, and Thailand.

The Singapore Art Show was a biennial festival for visual art in Singapore, first organised by the National Arts Council in 2005 as a platform for local Artist|artists and other local residents. The Singapore Art Show was planned to be held on alternating years with the Singapore Biennale. The Art Show had a national focus on Singaporean and Singapore-based artists, while the Singapore Biennale, launched in 2006, would have a broader scope of Southeast Asian contemporary art in the international sphere. Instead of having a single theme like the Biennale, the Art Show had sought to feature a large number of exhibitions by local artists without an overarching curatorial theme.

Malaysian contemporary music is an artistic phenomenon within Malaysia that has its roots in the 1980s with pioneer composers like Valerie Ross. However, little information about that period exists in written sources. The genre gained visibility and momentum only in the new millennium due to the internet phenomenon, and in 2002 in particular, when the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) programmed several works by Malaysian composers, namely Chong Kee Yong's Echoed Dream (2002), Sunetra Fernando's 'Wayang' (2002) and Tazul Izan Tajuddin's Sebuah Tenunan III (2003). They represent the first local commissions by a professional symphony orchestra in the country. Interest in orchestral music by Malaysian composers grew and when the orchestra held its first Forum For Malaysian Composers in 2003 the event was a triumph for the local music scene.

Ffotogallery is the national development agency for photography in Wales. It was established in 1978 and since June 2019 has been based in Cathays, Cardiff. Previous editions have been curated by Jeremy Millar (2003), Gilane Tawadros (2006), Julian Stallabrass (2008), Martin Parr (2010) and Photoworks (2012). Brighton Photo Biennial announced its merger with Photoworks in 2006 and in 2020 its name was changed to Photoworks Festival.

Format International Photography Festival is a biennial photography festival held in Derby, UK. It takes place in March in various venues in Derby including Quad, University of Derby, Derby Museum and Art Gallery, Derwent Valley Mills, Market Place and in nearby cities.

Ho Tzu Nyen is a Singaporean contemporary artist and filmmaker whose works involve film, video, performance, and immersive multimedia installations. His work brings together fact and myth to mobilise different understandings of Southeast Asia's history, politics, and religion, often premised upon a complex set of references from art history, to theatre, cinema, and philosophy. Ho has shown internationally at major exhibitions such as the Aichi Triennale, Japan (2019), the Sharjah Biennial 14, United Arab Emirates (2019), and the Gwangju Biennale, South Korea (2018). In 2011, Ho represented Singapore at the 54th Venice Biennale at the Singapore Pavilion, presenting the work The Cloud of Unknowing.

Poulomi Basu is an Indian artist, documentary photographer and activist, much of whose work addresses the normalisation of violence against marginalised women.

Aaron Schuman is an American photographer, writer, curator and educator based in the United Kingdom. His books of photography include Folk (2016), Slant (2019) and Sonata (2022).
